  • Blackwater fever is a serious clinical syndrome manifested by acute intravascular hemolysis, fever, and the passage of black or red urine, which is classically associated with falciparum malaria and irregular administration of quinine. In Korea, Plasmodium vivax is the only endemic malaria circulating; a number of imported cases of falciparum malaria have been reported in patients following return from international travel to a malaria endemic area. Therefore, it is important for health care professionals including pediatricians to be aware of the falciparum malaria and its clinical courses. Herein, we report a case of a 14-year-old girl with severe falciparum malaria that was complicated by blackwater fever.

  • To determine the characteristics of manganese removal in Korea, 31 multi-regional water treatment plants (WTPs) were examined. The concentration of manganese in raw water was higher than the standards for drinking water at 2 WTPs. Manganese should be properly removed during water treatment processes to reduce the occurrence of black water in the distribution system because $Mn^{+2}$ can cause black deposits when it is oxidized. Manganese can effectively removed by oxidation, followed by sedimentation and filtration as well as absorption by greensand. Manganese absorption by greensand was the major mechanism for the removal of manganese, and it is effectively removed using this process. Regeneration of greensand using an oxidation agent was necessary for continuous and adequate removal of manganese.

  • A new black barley variety, "Heuksoojeongchal," was developed as a cross between "Keunalbori 1" and "Masankwamaek/Mortoni" at the National Institute of Crop Science, RDA in 2014. Heuksoojeongchal had a longer culm length (89 cm) and a later average heading date and maturity than Seodunchalbori. It also had a spike length of 5.0 cm, $543spikes/m^2$, and 54 grains/spike. The 1000-grain weight of Heuksoojeongchal (36.0 g) was heavier than that of Seodunchalbori. Heuksoojeongchal showed resistance to barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV). The yield potential of Heuksoojeongchal was approximately 7% higher than that of Seodunchalbori upland, but the average yield potential was similar in upland and paddy fields. Among the quality characteristics, the ${\beta}-glucan$ content (6.7%) was higher and the amylose content (5.5%) was lower than those of Seodunchalbori. The whiteness of the black barley was low, and its absorption rate and spreadability were similar to those of Seodunchalbori.

  • This study is a bibliographical investigation of Xixia woodcut print which was discovered in a stupa at Khara-Khoto in early 20th century. Comparing with other published in Koryo Dynasty, I examine the relativity of both prints. As a result, it is found that Xixia woodcut print TK240 has a close similarity with (translated by Kumarasiva) published in later Koryo Dynasty. And it will be an important fact which can make clear independent publication of printed in later Koryo Dynasty.

  • Soluble manganese removal was analyzed as a function of filter media, filter depth, presence or absence of chlorination, and surface manganese oxide concentration in water treatment processes. Sand, manganese oxide coated sand (MOCS), sand+MOCS, and granular activated carbon(GAC) were used as filter media. Manganese removal, surface manganese oxide concentration, turbidity removal, and regeneration of MOCS in various filter media were investigated. Results indicated that soluble manganese removal in MOCS was rapid and efficient, and most of the removal happened at the top of the filter. When filter influent (residual chlorine 1.0mg/L) with an average manganese concentration of 0.204mg/L was fed through a filter column, the sand+MOCS and MOCS columns can remove 98.9% and 99.2% of manganese respectively on an annual basis. On the other hand, manganese removal in sand and the GAC column was minimal during the initial stage of filtration, but after 8 months of filter run they removed 99% and 35% of manganese, respectively. Sand turned into MOCS after a certain period of filtration, while GAC did not. In MOCS, the manganese adsorption rate on the filter media was inversely proportional to the filter depth, while the density of media was proportional to the filter depth.

  • A greenhouse experiment was conducted to examine the effect of initial population density (Pi) of Helicotylenchus dihystera on six commercial tomato cultivars. Two-week-old tomato seedlings of six commercial cultivars were transplanted in d-10-cm clay pot and was inoculated with to give 0, 0.02, 0.2, and 2 nematodes/g soil. Plants were grown in a greenhouse for 60 days. Root and plant weights were unaffected but plant height declined only at inoculum level of 2 nematodes/g soil. At the highest initial population density (2 nematodes/g soil), plant height of tomato cv. Poseidon was reduced by 24%. Tomato cv. Hoyong produced the most nematodes with 7.0 nematodes/g soil and the least was tomato cv. Miniheuksu with 2.2 nematodes/g soil.

  • Filtration experiments were conducted to determine the characteristics of manganese removal in filtration using 4 different filter media including sand and manganese sand(MS). Filtration velocity was 123 m/d and the flow rate was $3.9m^3/d$ per column. Duration of these experiments was about one year, and manganese dioxide accumulation, turbidity removal, manganese removal, and organic material removal were examined depending on filter media. When filter influent(residual chlorine 1.0 mg/L) with an average manganese concentration of 0.208 mg/L was fed through a filter column, the sand+MS and MS columns removed 98.9% and 99.2% of manganese respectively on an annual basis. When there is need to replace the sand filters with a MS filter to remove manganese, it was shown that the replacement of a partial sand filter with MS had adequate manganese removal.

  • The resistance to bacterial leaf blight of Conventional varieties (chodongi, Yongcheon etc.) cultivated from 1920 to 1956 in Korea were tested by means of 5 pathotypes of causal organism Xanthomonas oryzase (Uyeda et lshiyama) DOWSON. The results of this test are: 1. Among 74 varieties, 69 varieties including 'Chodongji, Yongcheon, Aedhal, Yongsang, Daegu, Mitdhari, pungok, etc' belong to the Kinmaze group that is highly susceptible to this disease. 2. 3 varieties: Heukbal, Doipnam, Whangphan belong to the Kogyoku group. 3. 2 varieties: Namgok, Gangbukdo, show unknown reaciton to differential varieties. 4. In 69 varieties belonging to the Kinmaze group $99.5\%$ of the plants were infected by bacterial group I. $99.6\%$ in bacterial group II. $100\%$ in group III, $99.7\%$ in group IV, and $99.8\%$ in group V. 5. In 3 varieties belong to Kyogyoku group, $1.7\%$ of the plants were infected in bacterial group I. $98.8\%$ in group II, $100\%$ in group III, IV and $1.4\%$ in group V.
