  • Flexural strength of concrete ground slab reinforced with steel fiber is evaluated using the equivalent flexural strength ratio of steel fiber reinforced concrete based on the yield line theory. Recently, the European standard specifies that the tensile performance of the steel fiber reinforced concrete be evaluated directly from the residual flexural strength after the cracking of concrete. Thus, in the study, an experiment was carried out to evaluate the conventional equivalent flexural strength ratio and the residual flexural strength of the steel fiber reinforced concrete. Then the design flexural strength was investigated according to the location of a point load, based on the ratio of the radius of contact area of the load to the radius of relative stiffness. Design flexural capacity obtained from ACI 360R-10 was smaller than that from TR 34 (2003 & 2013). In addition, TR 34 (2013), which evaluates the design flexural capacity based on the residual flexural strength, showed slightly smaller value than TR 34 (2003).

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical properties of high strength concretes reinforced with hooked steel fiber. For this purpose, total 36 specimens whose variables are concrete compressive strength, steel fiber aspect ratio, and steel fiber volume contents, are made and tested. From the test results including previous research work, flexural performance of steel fiber reinforced high strength concrete is evaluated in terms of flexural strength and toughness index. Flexural behavior of steel fiber reinforced high strength concrete is enhanced with respect to the fiber volume content, the aspect ratio, and concrete compressive strength. More efforts are devoted to evaluate quantitatively between the flexural strength and the structural parameters such as the fiber volume content, the aspect ratio, and concrete compressive strength.

  • In this study, flexural strength properties of concrete under biaxial stress state were experimentally investigated. Tests for size effect and fatigue behaviour of concrete under biaxial stress were carried out by the ASTM C 1550 and the biaxial flexure test(BFT). The results given by the biaxial tests were compared to those by the third-point bending test. Test results showed that biaxial flexural strengths obtained from the ASTM C 1550 and the biaxial flexure test are greater than the strength by the third-point bending test. As the size increases, the uniaxial and biaxial flexural strength decreases. However, the slope of the size effect of the biaxial strength was greater than that of the uniaxial strength. Finally, the fatigue response of concrete under the biaxial stress state was similar with that for uniaxial stress state.

  • Results of seventy-seven specimens tested by this study and previous research were collected and evaluated to propose the flexural strength and shear strength for flexural members with steel fiber concrete. For strength evaluation, structural parameters such as compressive strength, steel fiber content, tensile reinforcement ratio, and shear span to effective depth ratio are involved. The proposed equations for flexural and shear strength are regarded to give a good prediction for the strength of steel fiber reinforced composite and/or RC beams to compare with equations by previous researchers. Especially, the proposed shear strength equation in this study shows the lowest the mean value, the coefficient of variation and the error ratio among predictions by several equations. Therefore, equations for shear strength and flexure strength, which are proposed in this study are to be useful measure to predict the actual behavior and failure mode of steel fiber reinforced composite beams.

  • In this study, the flexural test of amorphous steel fiber-reinforced concrete was performed according to ASTM C 1609 to investigate its flexural performances. The amorphous steel fibers have different configurations from conventional steel fibers : thinner sections and coarser surfaces. Primary test parameters are fiber type (amorphous and conventional steel fibers), concrete compressive strength (27 and 50 MPa), and fiber volume fraction (0.25, 0.50, and 0.75%). Based on the test results, flexural strength and flexural toughness of the amorphous and conventional steel fiber-reinforced concrete were investigated. The results showed that the addition of the amorphous steel fibers into concrete could enhance both flexural strength and toughness while the addition of the conventional steel fibers into concrete was mainly effective to increase the flexural toughness.

  • This paper aims at investigating the bending strength of high-strength concrete beams with compressive strength of 80 MPa. The experimental parameters included nominal yielding strength of rebar with 400 and 600 MPa, rebar ratio ranging from 0.98 to 1.97%, and shear span-effective depth ratios (a/d) of 6.0 and 4.8. Experimental results were discussed regarding load-deflection relationship, ductility, bending strength, and prediction of bending strength of beams. Test results indicate that the use of high-strength rebar increased bending strength but decreased ductility. As span-effective depth ratio increased, the ductility of test beams decreased. In addition, test results of bending strength were compared with predictions from the current KCI code, Eurocode 2 and Korean Highway Design Specification (KHDC). The design code predictions for bending strength underestimated the experimental results. Therefore, the current design code predictions for bending strength of high-strength concrete beams would provide conservative design. Predictions of bending strength from KCI code using strength reduction factors and those from Eurocode 2 as well as KHDC using material factors were similar each other.

  • This paper studies the bending behavior of ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) beams focused on the effect of variation in major material design parameters such as tensile strength, elastic modulus of UHPFRC, and rebar ratio. Analytical results show that the variation in the range of ${\pm}20%$ in the tensile strength of UHPFRC causes the significant difference in ${\pm}8{\sim}9%$ of bending strength compared to the reference condition. The variation of elastic modulus in UHPFRC rarely causes the effect on the bending strength of the UHPFRC section, whereas causes the difference in the slopes of moment-curvature curves, indicating different bending stiffness of UHPFRC sections. For the rebar with yield strength of 400MPa, the bending strength of SC120f is increased by 30, 67, and 99% when the rebar ratio is 1.0, 1.5, and 20%, respectively, compared to the rebar ratio of 0.5%. Therefore, it is observed that the variation of rebar ratio significantly affects the difference in bending strength of UHPFRC beams. However, as the compressive strength of UHPFRC becomes greater, the effect of rebar ratio on the increase of bending strength is decreased.

  • This paper presents experimental and analytical results on flexural behavior of flexural members made of SIFCON. Twelve SIFCON beams were subjected to bending tests and their flexural behavior was evaluated. Experimental variables included steel fiber type, presence of tensile reinforcement, and height of section. The specimens using Type-B steel fibers, which had better pullout resistance than Type-A steel fibers, showed flexural failure behavior without shear failure. The aspect ratio of steel fiber had a great influence on the behavior of SIFCON beams without tensile steel, however the effect on the behavior of SIFCON beams was negligible. In addition, the flexural strength equation for SIFCON was proposed in the study. The mean and standard deviation of the ratios of the predicted value to the experimental value are 1.02 and 0.04, respectively. Therefore, the proposed flexural strength equation can be useful for the design and performance evaluation of SIFCON beam.

  • The flexural strength of composite HSB hybrid I-girders under positive moment is investigated by the moment-curvature analysis method to evaluate the applicability of the current AASHTO LRFD design specification to such girders. The hybrid girders are assumed to have the top flange and the web fabricated from HSB600 steel and the bottom flange made of HSB800 steel. More than 6,200-composite I-girder sections that satisfy the section proportion limits of AASHTOL RFD specifications are generatedby the random sampling technique to consider a statistically meaningful wide range of section properties. The flexural capacities of the sections are calculated by the nonlinear moment-curvature analysis in which the HSB600 and HSB800 steels are modeled as an elastoplastic, strain-hardening material and the concrete as CEB-FIP model. The effects of ductility ratio and compressive strength of concrete slab on the flexural strength of composite hybrid girders make of HSB steels are analyzed. Numerical results indicated that the current AASHTO-LRFD equation can be used to calculate the flexural strength of composite hybrid girders fabricated from HSB steel.

  • The method to evaluate the flexural capacity of steel fiber-reinforced ultra high strength concrete beams was proposed in this study. An experimental program was set up and fourteen beams have been tested. Test results were compared with predictions by design code and by the proposed method, respectively. It was found that predictions by using ACI 544 Committee recommendations considerably underestimate the flexural capacity. Underestimation of flexural capacity resulted from that of tensile stress block. Three-point bending test data of notched prism specimens and their inverse analysis results were incorporated into modeling of tension stress block. The ratio of the predicted to the experimental flexural capacity was in the range of 0.98 to 1.14. The present study represents that the proposed method allows more realistic prediction of flexural capacity of steel fiber-reinforced ultra high strength concrete beams.
