  • Turbulent flow characteristics in the near wake of a square cylinder have been studied experimentally by using a Digital PIV method. Experiments are performed at the Reynolds numbers of 1600 and 3900 based on the free-stream velocity and the square height. The ensemble averaged turbulence statistics are acquired from 2030 realizations of instantaneous fluctuating velocity field after the conventional Reynolds decomposition. The differences in turbulent intensity and Reynolds shear stress profiles fur both oases indicate that the effect of Reynolds number seems to be descernible mainly due to the occurrence of transition in the separated shear layer. Because of the periodic nature of vortex shedding process, transverse velocity fluctuations contribute dominantly , to turbulent kinetic energy distribution. A comparison with previous LDV data obtained at much higher Reynolds number shows a fairly good agreement each other. It turns out that the effect of Reynolds number diminishes as increasing Reynolds number, which is a well-known feature of a sharp-edged bluff body wake. The streamwise variation of turbulence intensities are compared with those from a circular cylinder along the centerline at the same Reynolds number. The overall magnitudes and the decay rates of turbulence intensities are quite similar, but some differences are noticeble especially in the transverse intensity variation.

  • The flame deflector should be constructed to minimize the induced environmental effects on the launch vehicle and to minimize the exhaust impingement effects on the launch complex structures during the lift-off operation. Therefore, it should be designed to avoid recirculation and reverse flow of rocket exhaust plumes. The circumstance around launch complex and characteristics of launch vehicle should be taken into consideration for the flame deflector design. In this paper, we designed the flame deflector reflecting KSLV-II 1st engine characteristics and analyzed the effect of exhaust plumes related to change geometry by means of computational flow analysis.

  • There are cofferdam and watertight wall to prevent of circulation or pollution during building of ocean structures like a dam and bridge in the harbors area and the sea. Inflow fluid and base of structure is important thing as one of the structural design factors for this interception wall like a cofferdam and watertight wall. In this study, it is revealed that at least 500 instantaneous velocity field data are required for ensemble average to get reliable turbulence statistics. The turbulent shear flow around a surface-mounted vertical wall was investigated by using the two-frame PIV(CACTUS 3.1) system and Mean velocity distributions have also been measured in the whole flow field.

  • Procedures for the development of a preswirl stator-propulsion system for a VLCC 300K are described in this paper. The preswirl stator-propulsion system is one of the compound propulsor systems, which is used for the purpose of recovering propeller slipstream rotational energy by locating a stator in front of the propeller. The preswirl stator-propulsion system can be considered as a most reliable energy saving device because of its simple mechanism. Five stators are designed for the existing hull form and propeller, and their effects are verified by model tests. Open-water test result of the preswirl stator-propulsion system at the cavitation tunnel show $4{\sim}6%$ increase of open-water efficiency compared to that of a propeller without stators. Maximum 6.5% decrease of delivered power at the design speed(15.5knots) is expected with the designed stator based on the analysis results of resistance and self-propulsion test at the towing tank.

  • Large eddy simulations of transitional flows around a stud installed on a flat plate have been performed to investigate an influence of grid resolution on turbulence stimulation by the stud. Because streamwise vortical structures generated by the stud played an important role in turbulence stimulation of boundary layer, streamwise vorticity was compared in the wake region behind the stud when the number of grids increased or decreased by a ratio of ${\sqrt{2}}$ in streamwise, wall-normal and spanwise directions respectively. The streamwise vorticity was shown to be mainly affected by spanwise grid resolution (${\Delta}z^+$) rather than streamwise and wall-normal grid resolution. In a viewpoint of numerical efficiency as well as physical resolution, ${\Delta}x^+{_{min}}=7.6$, ${\Delta}x^+{_{max}}=41$, ${\Delta}y^+{_{wall}}=0.25$ and ${\Delta}z^+=7.6$ was found to be desirable. Once a grid resolution was determined in each direction, a grid verification was carried out by increasing or decreasing the grid resolution y a ratio of ${\sqrt{2}}$ in all directions. The grid uncertainties of pressure and drag coefficients were 21.6 % and 2.8 % while the corrected uncertainties were 2 % and 0.3 %, respectively.

  • Turbulence structure and suspended sediment transport capacity in vegetated open-channel flows are investigated numerically in the present paper. The $\textsc{k}-\;\varepsilon$ model is employed for the turbulence closure. Mean velocity and turbulence characteristics including turbulence intensity, Reynolds stress, and production and dissipation of turbulence kinetic energy are evaluated and compared with measurement data available in the literature. The numerical results show that mean velocity is diminished due to the drag provided by vegetation, which results in the reduction of turbulence intensity and Reynolds stress. For submerged vegetation, the shear at the top of vegetation dominates turbulence production, and the turbulence production within vegetation is characterized by wakes. For emergent condition, it is observed that the turbulence generation is dominated by wakes within vegetation. In general, simulated profiles compares favorably to measured data. Computed values of eddy viscosity are used to solve the conservation equation for suspended sediment, yielding sediment concentration more uniform over the depth compared with the one in the plain channel. The simulation reveals that the suspended load decreases as the vegetation density increases and the suspended load increases as the particle diameter decreases for the same vegetation density.

Williamson(1988)과 Zhang(1995)의 연구결과와 유사한 결과를 얻을 수 있다.

  • The measurements of velocity vectors are made in the wake(X/d=8) of a circular cylinder with arc grooves. The experiments are conducted by changing the groove number. groove depth, Reynolds number(Re) and the angle of the first formed groove. We know that the optimum groove angle is 70 degree and the wake velocity profiles are improved at a few conditions. According to vortex shedding frequency distributions. the key solutions to vary the flow field behind the circular cylinder are 70 degree groove angle and more deeper grooves than 0.2mm depth.

  • The coherent wake structures behind a spinning cylinder placed in a uniform flow were experimentally investigated by means of phase averaging technique. With a fixed cylinder Reynolds number (Re=6,600), the conditionally sampled velocity vectors were obtained at a section of 3.0 and 10 diameters behind the cylinder for the range of spin parameter S(the ratio of the peripheral velocity to that of the uniform flow) 0 to 2. Spectral analysis and vorticity contours of the velocity data show that up to S=1.2, a Karman vortex street exists within the wake, however, the coherent structures become obscure and their vorticity strength decreases as S increase. Beyond S=1.2, a distinct vortex shedding frequency no longer exists, furthermore coherent structures disappear when S is over 1.6.
