  • Residential space can be stated as a decisive body compositely affected by environmental, physical, social, and cultural influences. Resulting from this idea, residential space can be defined as a mirror reflecting peoples' life at that period. Therefore, it is possible to understand the social and cultural aspects of a certain era through analyzing the residential space built and used at that period. Viewing from this point, latter term of Chosun Period, as a transitional period, was a tie of collapse for the structure of middle-class society forcing its identity system to be reorganized, and of improving upon commerce, agriculture, and manual industry to enable modernization. Following this idea, the goal of this research is to analyze characteristics of higher middle class residences built at the close of 19th century in Gyeonggi province in order to bring into light the change of social structure of the period.

  • 21세기는 과학적 물질문명의 발달로 인하여, 과거에는 느껴보지 못했던 물질문명의 풍요를 이끌어 냈으며, 컴퓨터, 메스미디어의 발달로 인하여, 인간 문명의 관심은 지구계를 벗어나 우주론적으로 확장되어 마침내 우주시대를 열었다. 하지만 인간의 이성과 함께 영원하리라 믿었던 과학적 합리성은 20세기 초두에 제국주의적 전쟁을 일으키게 되었으며, 그로 말미암아 이성 파괴 현상이 드러나게 되었다. 급기야 20세기말에 이르러 다원주의라 칭하기도 하는 후기산업사회의 병적 증후군들, 국가간의 경제전쟁, 컴퓨터 및 각종 정보매체를 통한 신속한 정보교환의 이면에는 인간의 자기정체성의 혼돈을 아울러 초래하게 되었다. 과학기술의 발달로 생태계 및 환경은 오염되고 파괴되었다. 20세기말에는 산성비, 엘니뇨, 라니냐 현상으로 인하며, 환경의 재앙을 초래하면서 이제 인간은 문명에 대하여 여태껏 가져왔던 확고한 믿음에 회의를 갖게 된 것이다. 이와 같은 현상은 인간의 주체적 인식과 과학적 믿음의 지나친 숭배로 인하며 자연도 인간에 의하여 지배되고 인간을 위해서만 존재하는, 인간과 자연의 이원론적인 생각 즉, 인간의 이성에 의해서만 가능하다고 생각한 "근대적 주체"에 대한 맹신의 결과인 것이다. 이렇듯 20세기의 문제점은 21세기로 전가되어 여전히 계속되고 있으며, 세계내의 가장 큰 문제점은 전쟁, 기아 등 보다 이제는 오히려 환경. 생태문제로 귀결되어 지구의 생존권 자체가 위협을 받게 되었다. 미술도 서구문명의 근대주의적 영향에 의해서 모더니즘 등 이성위주의 미술인 "근대 주체적 미술"로 발전하였지만 포스터모더니즘에서 보여 지듯 이미 인간의 순수한 이성을 근간으로 한 미술에 있어서의 주체성 주장은 상당부분 무너졌으며, 이제는 장르의 해체와 다원화 현상으로 나아가게 되었다. 환경파괴에 직면하여 이제 주체는 자연이라는 타자를 새롭게 등장시킨다. 그리하여 생명중심주의, 전체론, 감각 중심주의 등 인간과 자연이 함께 공생하는 자연을 향한 생태적인 미술이 절실히 요구되는 것이다. 이에 본 연구논문은 무비판적 서구미술에 동요되지 않고, 지극히 자연적이고 동양적이기도 한 끊임없이 생명력을 창출해 내는 자연에 관심을 같게 되었으며, 환경의 중요성과 함께 생태학적 미술, 즉 생태미술에 본인의 작업을 관계시키고자 한다. 근대적 문명사에 의해 매장된 생태적 유기성의 흔적을 고고학적 탐사방법을 통하며 발굴해 내며, 환경윤리와 생태학, 심층 생태학, 북친의 '사회 생태학'을 수용하여 물질성의 생태적 복원과 함께 조형공간의 다원성에 대한 생태 미술의 일단을 규명코자 하였다.

A Study on the Buddhist Sculptures of Modern Buddhist Artist SeokhaSichan (근대기 금어(金魚) 석하시찬(石霞施讚)의 불상 연구)

  • This study analyzes the sculptural art of SeokhaSichan(石霞施讚, 1893-1958), a significant figure in modern Korean Buddhist art, to re-examine his contributions and standing in the history of Korean Buddhist art. Sichan expanded the boundaries of modern Korean Buddhist art by developing a unique style based on the traditional sculptural techniques he learned from his mentor, Wanho Nakhyeon (玩虎洛現, 1869~1933). This study explores Sichan's artistic development, focusing on his artistic characteristics and sculptural evolution. Sichan's early works are characterized by small sculptures modeled after the main Buddha of Seokguram Grotto and heavily influenced by his mentor, WanhoNakhyeon. In his later works, notable features include a sense of massive volume, larger scale, upright postures, integration of the Buddha statue with its pedestal, and decorative treatment of drapery. These changes are interpreted as Sichan's response to social changes and his reflection of inner contemplation and artistic exploration in his works. This study reveals the influences of Wanho Nakhyeon, collaborations with Toewon Woneil(退雲圓日, 1877~1939), interactions with patron Kim Jiseonghwa(金至誠華), and master-disciple relationship with successor Geumchun Seongpil(金春性必) through literature review and newly discovered works by Sichan. His works and his artistic evolution are pivotal milestones in the history of modern Korean Buddhist sculpture, demonstrating a unique integration of traditional and modern aesthetics. This study provides valuable insights into how Sichan's artistic legacy was inherited and developed by subsequent generations and offers crucial materials for the study of modern Korean Buddhist sculpture history.

Love and Economy in Cross-border Marriages in South Korea (사랑과 경제의 관계를 통해 본 이주결혼)

  • This study attempts to explore a phenomenon of an expansion of emotional capitalism in the context of marriage migration. Emphasizing that 'emotion,' 'love,' 'affection,' 'intimacy,' and 'care' are neither materialistic nor a work, and noting that they are social roles attached to natural femininity and that they are separated from the economic realm, modern myth has been challenged by the increase of marriage industry, emotional/service work, and care industry. This study discusses the ways in which individual desires for love and intimacy and her/his economical needs are combined or negotiated. Specifically, this study 1) reviews existing literature on how 'love' and 'intimacy' has been combined with economy under capitalism in general, 2) discusses the ways in which a marriage has been commercially negotiated within the context of South Korea, 3) analyzes combined aspects of 'love' and 'economy' within cross-border marriages and suggests that cross-border marriages, even though they are highly commercially negotiated, may not be fully explained by 'economy' only as other marriages have both aspects of 'love' and 'economy.' An analysis on 'love' and 'economy,' not only separated from each other but also controversial, is essential for understanding 'intimacy' and transitions of Korean families in post-modern era. However, the evaluation criteria for commercial trades in 'love' and 'intimacy' have not developed yet. Whereas a certain trade is inevitable or essential, others may threaten our lives. Developing the ethical and political evaluation criteria on such commercial trades requires future study.

Spatial Characters of Korean Cheonghak-dong Utopia (한국 이상향의 성격과 공간적 특징 -청학동을 사례로-)

  • Cheonghak-dong is a prototype of Korean traditional utopia. Cheonghak-dong Utopia assumed at Jiri Mountain in the late of Goryeo period, and the place name of Cheonghak-dong could be found at the Royal capital(Hanyang) in early Joseon Dynasty, and then it diffused to the outskirts of the original place and local area in the middle period of Joseon Dynasty, eventually it diffused to the nationwide in the modern times. Now, Cheonghak-don was fixed at Mukgea village in Hadong-county officially. The placeness of Cheonghak-dong was changed from the fairyland to the human habitation and a sightseeing place.

  • 한국근대건축역사 자료로서 정확하고 객관성 있는 사실을 기록하기 위하여 증인들의 체험담을 토대로 정리하였다. 특히, 배기형 선생의 초기 활동 내용과 건축가상은 함성권(전 한양대 교수), 장기수(현 부산동인건축)씨와 신건축문화연구소 시절부터 10년간 재직한 김창서(현 협화건축)소장, 그리고 함성권 교수의 구조담당 조수로서 배기형의 건축작품 활동상을 가까이서 지켜본 주경재(현 건국대)교수, 실습생으로 신건축문화연구소 시절과 1959년 군제대후 구조사 복직 근무한 최영규(현 인하대)교수의 생생한 증언을 토대로 정리하였다. 후기의 활동상은 현 구조사 대표 윤홍갑 소장과 그 당시 근무했던 이동배(현 인하대)교수, 이문섭(현 인하대)교수가, 그리고 1970년대 구조사를 윤소장에 물려주고 난 뒤의 활동상은 김석철(현 아키반), 방수일(현 범일건축)소장의 증언을 토대로 하였다. 보다 객관성있는 기록을 위해서 각 증인들은 자신의 기억이 불투명한 경우 당시에 관련되었던 또다른 증인을 찾아서 확인하는 성의를 보여주는 등 사실에 충실할 수 있도록 협조해 주었다.

Illusionism and Enlightment of the Magic Lantern Images - On the Scientific and Technological Development of the pre-modern optical instrument, Magic Lantern and the Transition of Its Images - (마술환등 영상의 환상성과 계몽성 근대 영상기구 마술환등의 과학기술적 발전과 영상문화의 변화)

  • This thesis investigates the complex functions of the magic lantern in illusionism and enlightment which was the most popular visual media and the direct ancestor of cinema. Especially, the thesis focuses on the characteristics of magic lantern's images which had been varied with the scientific and technological development. During the early period of the magic lantern, from the late 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century, it frightened viewers by showing magic images with ghosts and spectres, 'phantasmagoria', and wondered with images of natural catastropes and interesting stories like fables and fairy tales, which fulfilled the entertainment function. Since the mid 19th century the magic lantern began to show not only pictures of the 'scientific themes' on the earth, nature and human, but also them of the ethnological on the far, exotic worlds like Africa, Amazon and Syberia etc. from the European perspective. These contents conducted the educative function and contributed to the process of Enlightment to the peoples in the pre-modern age. The two functions of the magic lantern such as entertainment and education had been neither historically followed, nor clearly divided, but the one was predominant according to the development of lantern techniques as well as the changes of the world view and the culture of the time. The entertainment function of the magic lantern based on the visual fantacy did exist in the late 19th century further, and also in the late industrial society, even in the age of highly developed science and technology, viewers want rather 're-enchantment' by illusionism than facts and truths on the reality. This is an essential characteristic of the moving image media, as it had already been presented in the images of the magic lantern.

A Series of Biographies of The Collectors of Modern Archaic Art Objects of Korea 1: Jang, Taek Sang (한국 근대의 고미술품 수장가 1: 장택상)

  • It is encouraging fact that people are more interested in collecting modern archaic art objects of Korea with broadening spectrum of research these days. For the research in this area is significant in that it makes us learn the level of collection and appreciation which were prevalent at the end of the Josen Age by trend of preferring Occidental pictures as well as modern change in the form of collection, and enables us to reconstruct the history of modern art objects in East Asia. Except Jeon, Hyung-Pil(全鎣弼: 1906-1962), the modern collectors of Korea were not studied in details with respect to the course or contents of collection. Besides Jeon, Hyung Pil, the main modern collectors of Korea were Park, Young-cheol(朴榮喆: 1879-1939), Kim, Yong-jin(金容鎭: 1882-1968), Ham, Seok-tae(咸錫泰: 1889-?), Kim, Sung-soo(金性洙: 1891-1955), Choi, Chang-hak(崔昌學: 1891-?), Jang, Taek-sang(張澤相: 1893-1969), Kim, Chan-young(金瓚泳: 1893-?), Lee, Han-bok(李漢福: 1897-1940), Park, Chang-hun(朴昌薰: 1898-1951), Baek, In-je(白麟濟: 1898-?), Lee, Byung-jik(李秉直: -1973), et al. The object of this publication in serial form is to trace and identify the life, collected articles and contents of collection of Korean collectors who intensively collected archaic art objects in the modern age of Korea, especially, under the rule of Japanese imperialism. The first person to be introduced in this publication in serial form is Jang, Taek Sang, a leading figure in the political history of Korea. Born as the son of wealthy man, he ascended to the position of prime minister, leading a dramatic life. Being a distinguished orator, Jang, Taek Sang was well known as an appreciator and collector of picture, calligraphy and pottery. As one of the collectors of main cultural property under the rule of Japanese imperialism, Jang, Taek Sang collected countless distinguished heritages, most of which were lost during the Korean War. As he became a candidate for president to compete with Lee, Seung Man later, he sold main heritages. Thus, nearly all of the collected articles were scattered.

  • As the city continues to breed a variety of problems in the development process, in order to prevent the city's decline, the issue of urban regeneration is placed in the significant position among cities' problems. Based on the background of urban regeneration, this paper discussed the research status of urban regeneration in the current stage in various countries and obtained high value cases for analysis through the screening and evaluation. Through the analysis of the cases, outstanding measures had been acquired in developed countries on the urban regeneration. The essence and possibility of urban regeneration solutions had been explored from different angles. Finally, the key points of urban regeneration program solutions had been obtained to make the city keep a longer life and more vitality.
