  • The gaze cueing effect appears as detecting a target rapidly and accurately when the direction of others' gaze corresponds with the location of the visual target. The gaze cue can be affected by the orientation of the face. The gaze cueing effect is strong when the face is presented upright, but the effect has only been observed in some studies when the face is presented inverted(e.g., Tipples, 2005). This study aimed to examine whether the gaze can operate as a cue to guide attention with upright faces, and to add variables that can affect the gaze cue, such as the orientation of the face, the orientation of the background, and a time interval between the gaze cue and the target(SOA). Furthermore, it systematically manipulated these variables to explore whether the gaze cueing effect can be observed under the various conditions. The results showed a significant gaze cueing effect even on the inverted face, contrasting with previous studies. These findings were consistently observed when the background stimulus was absent(Experiment 1) and present(Experiments 2 and 3). However, there was no significant interaction in the orientations between the face and the background. Moreover, in the short SOA(150 ms), we found a significant gaze cueing effect in conditions of every face and background orientation, whereas there was no significant gaze cueing effect in the long SOA(1000 ms). By presenting a consistent observation of the gaze cueing effect under the short SOA(150ms) even in the inverted faces, the results of this study pose questions about the reliability and repeatability of previous studies that did not report significant results of gaze cueing effects in that faces. Furthermore, our results are meaningful in providing additional evidence that attention can be guided toward the direction of the gaze even in various directions of the face and background.

  • The Nishinoshima volcano, located 940 km south of Tokyo, experienced an eruption from June to August 2020. The volcanic gas and ash from the eruption of Nishinoshima that occurred at the end of July 2020 was reported to have the potential to affect the Korean Peninsula. In this study, we used Ash3D, a numerical simulation program for volcanic ash dispersion, to investigate the eruption that occurred at 0:00 local time on July 28, 2020, with a volcanic explosivity index of three. The results showed that the volcanic ash cloud reached Okinawa on the morning of July 30, carried by an east wind. It then moved northward and reached Jeju Island on August 1, eventually circulating in a clockwise direction and reaching southern part of the Korean Peninsula on August 2. The concentration of Particulate Matter 10 (PM10), measured at the Jeju Gosan Meteorological Observatory in Jeju Island, increase from August 1. A similar increase in PM10 concentration was observed at the Gudeok Mountain Weather Station in Busan from August 2. These findings suggested that eruption of the Nishinoshima volcano had an impact on the fine dust concentrations at Jeju Island and southern part of the Korean Peninsula.

  • The rental history data of public bicycles in Seoul were analyzed to examine how pandemic phenomena such as COVID-19 caused changes in people's micro mobility. Data for 2019 and 2021 were compared and analyzed by dividing them before and after COVID-19. Data were collected from public data portal sites, and data marts were created for in-depth analysis. In order to compare the changes in the two periods, the riding direction type dimension and the rental station type dimension were added, and the derived variables (rotation rate per unit, riding speed) were newly created. There is no significant difference in the average rental time before and after COVID-19, but the average rental distance and average usage speed decreased. Even in the mobility of Ttareungi, you can see the slow rhythm of daily life. On weekdays, the usage rate was the highest during commuting hours even before COVID-19, but it increased rapidly after COVID-19. It can be interpreted that people who are concerned about infection prefer Ttareungi to village buses as a means of micro-mobility. The results of data mart-based visualization and analysis proposed in this study will be able to provide insight into public bicycle operation and policy development. In future studies, it is necessary to combine SNS data such as Twitter and Instagram with public bicycle rental history data. It is expected that the value of related research can be improved by examining the behavior of bike users in various places.

  • We examine the motives of foreigner's investments in the Korean bonds by maturity and try to prove that market impacts are different by their investment maturity. Foreign investors initially focused on short-term bonds, but have expanded to mid- to long-term bonds since 2010. The previous studies found that covered interest arbitrage was the main reason for foreign investment. However, there should be some other reasons as their investment in mid- to long-term bonds might have nothing to do with arbitrage. In the empirical analysis, we found that foreign investment in bonds with less than 2 year maturity is driven by arbitrage as previous studies. However, investment in bonds with 2-5 year maturity is sensitive to the FX volatility and the stock market performance compared with the U.S. and investment in bonds with more than 5 year maturity is driven by the CDS premium differential between Korea and PIIGS countries. The more foreigners have invested mid- to long-term bonds, the stronger downward pressure has been on the bond yields. In addition, foreign investors indirectly affected the spreads. Meanwhile, the government should prepare some policy measures since concerns over side effects such as the Korean won appreciation and an abrupt capital outflow are arising.

  • A radial chart of Excel is very useful graphical method in delivering information for numerical data. However, it is not easy to discriminate or classify many individuals. In this case, after shaping each individual of a radial chart, we need to apply shape analysis. For a radial chart, since landmarks for shaping are formed as many as the number of variables representing the characteristics of the object, we consider a shape that connects them to a line. If the shape becomes complicated due to the large number of variables, it is difficult to easily grasp even if visualized using a radial chart. Principal component analysis (PCA) is performed on variables to create a visually effective shape. The classification table and classification rate are checked by applying the techniques of traditional discriminant analysis, support vector machine (SVM), and artificial neural network (ANN), before and after principal component analysis. In addition, the difference in discrimination between the two coordinates of generalized procrustes analysis (GPA) coordinates and Bookstein coordinates is compared. Bookstein coordinates are obtained by converting the position, rotation, and scale of the shape around the base landmarks, and show higher rate than GPA coordinates for the classification rate.

  • Purpose This study aimed to investigate which indirect parameters on preoperative MRI were the principal predictors of subscapularis tendon tears (STTs) requiring surgical repair. Materials and Methods Preoperative MRI scans of 86 patients were retrospectively reviewed for visual assessment of the STT, pathology of the long head of the biceps tendon (LHBT), posterior decentering (PD) of the humeral head, humeral rotation, fatty degeneration, and subscapularis muscle atrophy. To evaluate atrophy, visual grading using the anatomical line connecting the coracoid tip to the glenoid base, designated as the base-to-tip line (BTL), and thickness measurements were performed in the en-face view. Results Arthroscopically, 31 patients (36%) exhibited Lafosse type III or IV STT and underwent surgical repair. LHBT pathology (p = 0.002), PD of the humeral head (p = 0.012), fatty degeneration (p < 0.001), and BTL grade (p = 0.003) significantly correlated with STT. In the multivariate analysis, PD of the humeral head (p = 0.011, odds ratio [OR] = 5.14) and fatty degeneration (p = 0.046, OR = 2.81) were independent predictors of STT. Conclusion PD of the humeral head and fatty degeneration of the subscapularis can help to diagnose clinically significant STT. Interpretation of these findings may contribute to the planning of an optimal surgical strategy.

  • A recently proposed rapid-disassembly , carbon-minimized dismantle connection was tested using cyclic loading. To better understand the behavior of the test specimen, three-dimensional finite element (3D-FE) analyses were conducted using a "tied model" (bolted contact surfaces are tied together) and a "bolt-slip model" (contact surfaces slip and separate). The tied model suggests that plastic hinging of the beam occurs if the proposed connection behaves rigidly. The bolt-slip model suggests that the proposed connection, if manufactured and assembled properly, can dissipate energy to about 0.5 times that experienced by a rigid connection. However, when compared in a test, its moment-rotation hysteresis curve does not match well, which suggests that the low performance of the test specimen is attributable to a manufacturing deficiency. Regardless, the results corroborate the pinching phenomenon observed in the experimental hysteresis and fracture failure of the test specimen.

  • Severe skeletal anteroposterior and vertical discrepancy is difficult to obtain satisfactory result by only orthodontic treatment, and much anteroposterior movement and treatment stability require orthodontic treatment with orthognathic surgery. The treatment goal of mandibular prognathic patients is to promote the function of stomatognathic system including mastication and phonetics, to improve the esthetics of facial profile and to maintain stability. Positional changes of hyoid bone, pharynx and tongue were seen with mandibular movement after orthognathic surgery. This study was performed to observe the changes of perimandibular tissues of orthodontic patients with skeletal mandibular prognathism who treated with orthodontic treatment, and the changes of hyoid bone, pharyx and tongue by relapse or recurrance after before and after orthognathic surgery and retention. The 22 patients who had mandibular prognathism were selected. They treated with orthodontic treatment with sagittal split ramus osteotomy as orthognathic surgery. And lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken 3 times : pre-surgery (T1), immediate post-surgery (T2) and 2 years alter retention (T3). The results were as follows : 1. The hyoid bone returned back after clockwise rotation to maxilla and occlusal plane during retention (P<0.01). 2. The hyoid bone moved posterior-inferiorly by mandibular surgery and returned back anterior-superior after retention. (P<0.01) 3. The changes of pharyngeal depth showed a little decrease at upper area in post- surgery, but it was not a significant difference generally through before, after and retention. 4. In relating to tongue base, the angle of tongue base was decreased and the dorsal area of tongue base moved to inferior-posterior direction and to superior direction again after retention (P<0.01). 5. Related to the thickness of upper and lower lip, the thickness of upper lip decreased after surgery, and the soft tissues below lower lip increased after surgery and decreased after retention.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the cutting efficiency of coarse grit diamond burs with air-turbine handpiece on natural tooth. Materials and methods: Four groups of coarse grit diamond bur were selected: Komet (A), Shofu (B), Premier (C), and Mani (D). The extracted maxillary central incisors were used, and ten cuts were made on each specimen, using the rotary diamond burs. The surface of each bur was measured at the upper, middle, and bottom of the bur with confocal laser scanning microscope and imaged with SEM. The data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and t-test at the significance level of 0.05. Results: The surface roughness was measured. At the A diamond bur, the Sa values were $52.93\;{\mu}m$, $48.32\;{\mu}m$, $46.79\;{\mu}m$, $45.06\;{\mu}m$, and $43.43\;{\mu}m$ for control, test 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively. The Sa values were $50.68\;{\mu}m$, $45.62\;{\mu}m$, $44.41\;{\mu}m$, $44.10\;{\mu}m$, and $42.46\;{\mu}m$ for B diamond bur, $58.02\;{\mu}m$, $55.53\;{\mu}m$, $52.22\;{\mu}m$, $48.26\;{\mu}m$, and $45.36\;{\mu}m$ for C diamond bur, and $50.11\;{\mu}m$, $46.73\;{\mu}m$, $45.46\;{\mu}m$, $42.58\;{\mu}m$, and $41.80\;{\mu}m$ for D diamond bur. Surface roughness after each bur use showed significant changes, but no significant difference was found in surface roughness change between bur systems. Conclusions: Surface roughness in the same bur system showed significant differences after each tooth preparation. However no statistically significant differences were found in surface roughness between bur systems. The SEM images between control and test 4 showed the abraded particles.

  • Distinct Element Method(DEM) has a great advantage to model the discontinuous behaviour of jointed rock masses such as rotation, sliding, and separation of rock blocks. Geometrical data of joints by a field monitoring is not enough to model the jointed rock mass though the results of DE analysis for the jointed rock mass is most sensitive to the distributional properties of joints. Also, it is important to use a properly joint law in evaluating the stability of a jointed rock mass because the joint is considered as the contact between blocks in DEM. In this study, a stochastic modelling technique is developed and the dilatant rock joint is numerically modelled in order to consider th geometrical and mechanical properties of joints in DE analysis. The stochastic modelling technique provides a assemblage of rock blocks by reproducing the joint distribution from insufficient joint data. Numerical Modelling of joint dilatancy in a edge-edge contact of DEM enable to consider not only mechanical properties but also various boundary conditions of joint. Preprocess Procedure for a stochastic DE model is composed of a statistical process of raw data of joints, a joint generation, and a block boundary generation. This stochastic DE model is used to analyze the effect of deviations of geometrical joint parameters on .the behaviour of jointed rock masses. This modelling method may be one tool for the consistency of DE analysis because it keeps the objectivity of the numerical model. In the joint constitutive law with a dilatancy, the normal and shear behaviour of a joint are fully coupled due to dilatation. It is easy to quantify the input Parameters used in the joint law from laboratory tests. The boundary effect on the behaviour of a joint is verified from shear tests under CNL and CNS using the numerical model of a single joint. The numerical model developed is applied to jointed rock masses to evaluate the effect of joint dilation on tunnel stability.
