This paper deals with the free vibrations of arches with rectangular hollow section having constant area. The differential equations governing free vibrations of arches are derived in polar coordinates, in which the effect of rotatory inertia is included. Natural frequencies is computed numerically for parabolic arches with clamped-clamped, clamped-hinged and hinged-hinged ends. Comparisons of natural frequencies between this study and reference are made to validate theories and numerical methods developed herein. The lowest four natural frequency parameters are reported, with the rotatory inertia, as functions of three non-dimensional system parameters: the breadth ratio, the thickness ratio and the shape ratio

For a shear-deformable beam-column element subjected io non-conservative forces, equations of motion and a finite element formulation are presented applying extended Hamilton's principle. The influence of non-conservative force's direction parameter, internal and external damping forces, and shear deformation and rotary inertia effects on divergence and flutter loads of Beck's columns are intensively investigated based on element stiffness, damping and mass matrixes derived for the non-conservative system.

In ships and offshore structures, there are many local structures formed of thick plates and/or having the form of double wall panels. For the vibration analysis of such a kind of structures, Mindlin plate theory which includes the effects of shear deformation and rotary inertia is usually adopted. In this paper, the vibration and dynamic sensitivity analysis of Mindlin plates having the boundary conditions elastically restrained against rotation have been accomplished using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. Polynomials having the property of the Timoshenko beam functions are introduced and used as trial functions in the spatial representation of the deflection and rotations of cross sections in two directions of the plates. The results obtained by the introduced polynomials gave nearly the same numerical results as those by the Timoshenko beam functions with the remarkable reduction of computational efforts especially in the dynamic sensitivity analysis.

In this study, the effects of inertial driving on a fuel-cut zone were analyzed by measuring the instantaneous variations of fuel consumption and speed. Thirteen sites with 2-8% downhill slopes were selected for the vehicle experiments. The vehicles were driven on the sites in two different driving modes, and the various vehicle states were measured using OBD under driving. For the analysis of the effects of inertial driving, the characteristics of fuel consumption, speed, and rpm were compared between normal and inertial driving. As a result, the fuel consumption was reduced from 24% to 78% according to the downhill grade. The amount of fuel consumption reduction was about 30cc for driving 500m downhill. Fuel cost savings amounting to 35 billion won can be achieved if inertial driving will be done in the case of Munemi-ro3. It is also believed that the reduced fuel consumption and vehicle speed through inertial driving will have considerable environmental and safety benefits.

Energy flow analysis(EFA) is a representative method that can predict the statistical energetics of structures at high frequencies. Generally, as the frequency increases, the shear distortion and rotatory inertia effects in the out-of-plane motion of beams or plates become important. Therefore, to predict the out-of-plane energetics of coupled structures in the high frequency range, the energy flow analyses of Timoshenko beam and Mindlin plate are required. Unlike the energy flow model of Kirchhoff plate, the energy flow model of Mindlin plate is composed of three kinds of energy governing equations(out-of-plane shear wave, bending dominant flexural wave, and shear dominant flexural wave). This paper performed the energy flow finite element analysis(EFFEA) of coplanar coupled Mindlin plates. For EFFEA of coplanar coupled Mindlin plates, the energy flow finite element formulation of out-of-plane energetics in the Mindlin plate was performed. The general EFFEA program was implemented by MATLAB® language. For the verification of EFFEA of Mindlin plate, the various numerical applications were done successfully.

To overcome the drawback of currently available curved beam theories having non-symmetric thin-walled cross sections, a curved beam theory based on centroid-shear center formulation is presented for the spatially coupled free vibration and elastic analyses. For this, the displacement field is expressed by introducing displacement parameters defined at the centroid and shear center axes, respectively. Next the elastic strain and kinetic energies considering the thickness-curvature effect and the rotary inertia of curved beam are rigorously derived by degenerating the energies of the elastic continuum to those of curved beam. In order to illustrate the validity and the accuracy of this study, FE solutions using the Hermitian curved beam elements are presented and compared with the results by centroid formulation, previous research and ABAQUS's shell elements.

This paper presents a study on the calibration of accelerometer data in the gyroscope free inertial navigation system(GFINS) using fuzzy inference system(FIS). The conventional INS(inertial navigation system) which can measure yaw rate and linear velocity using inertial sensors as the gyroscope and accelerometer. However, the INS is difficult to design as small size and low power because it uses the gyroscope. To solve the problem, the GFINS which does not have the gyroscope have been studied actively. However, the GFINS has cumulative error problem still. Hence, this paper proposes Fuzzy-GFINS which can calibrate the data of an accelerometer using FIS consists of two inputs that are ratio between linear velocity of the autonomous ground vehicle(AGV) and the accelerometer and ratio between linear velocity of the encoders and the accelerometer. To evaluate the proposed Fuzzy-GFINS, we made the AGV with Mecanum wheels and applied the proposed Fuzzy-GFINS. In experimental result, we verified that the proposed method can calibrate effectively data of the accelerometer in the GFINS.

In this paper, we investigate the vibration analysis of plates, using an 8-node shell element that accounts for the transverse shear strains and rotary inertia. The forced vibration analysis of plates subjected to arbitrary loading is investigated. In order to overcome membrane and shear locking phenomena, the assumed natural strain method is used. To improve an 8-node shell element for forced vibration analysis, the new combination of sampling points for assumed natural strain method was applied. The refined first-order shear deformation theory based on Reissner-Mindlin theory which allows the shear deformation without shear correction factor and rotary inertia effect to be considered is adopted for development of 8-node assumed strain shell element. In order to validate the finite element numerical solutions, the reference solutions of plates are presented. Results of the present theory show good agreement with the reference solution. In addition the effect of damping is investigated on the forced vibration analysis of plates.

Owing to the increasing worldwide interest in green technology and renewable energy sources, flywheel energy storage systems (FESSs) are gaining importance as a viable alternative to traditional battery systems. Since the energy storage capacity of an FESS is proportional to the principal mass-moment of inertia and the square of the running speed, a design that maximizes the principal inertia while operatingrunning at the highest possible speed is important. However, the requirements for the stability of the system may impose a constraint on the optimal design. In this paper, an optimal design of an FESS that not only maximizes the energy capacity but also satisfies the requirements for system stability and reduces the sensitivity to external disturbances is proposed. Cross feedback control in combination with a conventional proportional-derivative (PD) controller is essential to reduce the effect of gyroscopic coupling and to increase the stored energy and the specific energy density.

The BEM for linear elastic stress analysis is applied to the highly rotating axisymmetric body problem which also involves the thermoelastic effects due to steady-state thermal conduction. The axisymmetric BEM formulation is briefly summarized and an alternative approach for transforming the volume integrals associated with such body force kernels into equivalent boundary integrals is described in a way of using the concept of inner product and vector identity. A discretization scheme for higher order BE is outlined for numerical treatment of the resulting boundary integral equations, and it is consequently illustrated by determining the stress distributions of the turbine rotor disk of the small turbojet engine(ADD 500) for which a FEM stress solution has been furnished by author.
