  • Objective: The surface roughness of orthodontic materials is an essential factor that determines the coefficient of friction and the effectiveness of tooth movement. The aim of this study is to evaluate the surface roughness change of the brackets and wires after experimental sliding quantitatively. Methods: Before and after experimental sliding tests, the surface roughness of stainless steel brackets, ceramic brackets, stainless steel wires, and beta-titanium (TMA) wires were investigated and compared using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Results: After sliding tests, changes in the surface of the wire were greater than changes in the bracket slot surface. The surface roughness of the stainless steel bracket was not significantly increased after sliding test, whereas the roughness of ceramic brackets was decreased. Both the surface roughness of stainless steel and TMA wires were increased after sliding test. More changes were observed on the ceramic bracket than the stainless steel bracket. Conclusions: AFM is a valuable research tool when analyzing the surface roughness of the brackets and wires quantitatively.

  • The presence of low adhesion at the wheel-rail contact point can result in skid of train wheels, and the skid, in turn, results in flats appearing on the wheels. Thus, anti-skid control has a crucial role for safe braking and prevention from flats that could cause a disastrous train accident. This paper presents dynamic modeling of a tilting train and the brake system of the tilting train, and analyzes the anti-skid logic used in the tilting train. The validity of the analysis is demonstrated via simulation study using Simulink for skid and re-adhesion circumstances of the tilting train.

  • In this study, we surveyed the operating status of the Light Sport Aircraft(LSA) in Korea, and reviewed the minimum requirements of the airpark for LSA. We are discuss about increased aerodrome traffic density and safety improvement, through the installation of the exit taxiway. The shape of the exit taxiway of an airpark used in LSA is a rectangle for usable two way direction of runway. The array types of exit taxiway influence paved and unpaved runway occupancy time of LSA.

  • Numerical study is carried out to make clear the wavemaking phenomena for a planning flat plate. Through the mumerical computations, some schematic wave patterns are compared with experimental results, for example, such as the bow divergent waves, triangle waves, stern divergent saves, stern cross waves. The characteristic distance of waves is found to be more inconsistent as the incidence angle increases. The comparison was mode between computations and experiments for incidence angles of 5, 10 and 15 degrees. However, a numerical difficulty is found around and behined the trailing edges for more than 20 degree.

  • The heavy snow event occurred on JAN 4, 2010 brought huge disaster such as Gimpo International Airport runway closed, heavy delays of other airport, and property damage of 16 billion won. Though this heavy snow event is involved in the general synoptic scale heavy snow forecast, it recorded too much snow amount and longer duration than expected. To explain this unusual event, we used the conveyor belt theory. By combining the synoptic scale heavy snow forecast and the conveyor belt theory, the characteristics of heavy snow event was well explained.

  • In this paper a free-form hull design program and performance prediction program for planing boat is introduced. This program enables the designer to do complex geometric hull shape design on a personal computer and accurately to predict power requirements for a given loading and velocity. For a free form design, Bezier curve model is adopted as a basic representation tool of curves and surfaces, and this program has versatile functions to do fairing jobs with a convenient graphical user interface. After creating a hull form the geometric data is provided in a manner compatible with a variety of analysis tools including 'Motion Analysis(by Zarnick)' for prediction of motion characteristics in regular waves, 'Running Attitude (by Savitsky)' for prediction of the running attitude and required power.
