  • Geophysical prospecting technologies are employed to environmental site assessments and monitoring, subsurface investigation, geologic hazard monitoring since they are able to provide information and imaging regarding the subsurface. In this study, we carried out several analysis on patent documents for the geophysical prospecting technologies. The patents including abstracts, claims and drawings from 1976 up to 2005 were surveyed and 904 patents were collected finally. The patents were investigated as to countries, years, assignees and technologies. Furthermore, we carried out the comparative analysis for technological level of assignee countries with United States patents. The top 5 assignee countries are United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Norway and France. Especially United States and United Kingdom play important role in this area as holding 663 patents.

  • Soil and groundwater contamination is an emerging national issue in recognition of the potential adverse impact to human health and ecosystem. In a recent registration, property owner's liability was addressed on the damages to neighbor's soil and groundwater caused by contaminant-plume migration. Soil and groundwater remediation is a technical and engineering project. But, the scientific and technical solutions for the project have been greatly influenced by social and political movement in the country. Governmental sectors, including local and central, should actively engage on this important issue through long-term planning and public investments. Government made regulations to prevent soil and groundwater contamination, not to punish private sector that has no technical and financial capability for solving such problems.

  • Successful field test results for high-current time-lapse electrical imaging in marine sediments area are discussed. Because field trial by commercially available equipments were failed, self-developed system which supports transmitting current up to 5 ampere was used. Some weak zones due to local fractures were detected, but the weak zone effect in this area by time-lapse measurements from sea level change was minor.

  • The electrical resistivity method is an effective geophysical tool to detect subsurface contamination because the contaminated zones show generally lower electrical resistivity. In this study, the electrical resistivity surveys were applied to a waste landfill site to image the subsurface structure around the landfill and to identify the contaminated zones. First, the dipole-dipole 2D resistivity surveys were conducted along the boundaries of landfill to define the developed contaminated zones. Then the crosshole resistivity tomography was applied to confirm the suspected contaminated zones at depth. The results of drilling and geochemical analysis of ground water supported that the low resistivity zones coincide well with the contaminated zones and the leachate pathways could be delineated effectively from the resistivity survey.

  • We have conducted multiple geophysical surveys to investigate the geoenvironmental change of the Nanjido Landfill due to the stabilization process. Geophyscial surveys are comprized of gravity, magnetic, dipole-dipole electrical and SP methods. Due to the field conditions, surveys were conducted on the top surface of the landfill no.2 and southern border areas in front of landfills. The gravity anomalies obtained on the top surface of the landfill no.2 in 1999 show that the gradient of the anomaly on the central area is decreasing in comparison with that observed four years ago. The complexity of magnetic anomaly pattern it also decreasing. These facts suggest that the stabilization work of the Nanjido landfill makes some progress by compaction process due to repetitive subsidence and refilling. The dipole-dipole electrical resistivity and SP data obtained on the outside of the waterproof wall at the landfill no.1 were severely affected by unsatisfactory surface conditions. On the other hand, the dipole-dipole electrical resistivity profiles obtained on the inside and outside parts of the waterproof wall at the landfill no.2 show the blocking effect of leachate flow by the waterproof wall. Few SP anomalies are observed on the top and side surfaces of the landfill no.2, but SP anomalies obtained on the base area inside the waterproof wall strongly reflect the effect of leachate collecting wells.

  • The small-loop electromagnetic technique has been used successfully for many geophysical qualitative investigations, particularly for shallow engineering and environmental surveys. Recently, various geophysical imaging methods based on numerical modeling and inversion have been tried in order to get more quantitative subsurface structure. However, conventional 2.5D small loop EM modeling takes a lot of time because responses should be calculated for several wave numbers and transformed into space domain. In this study, we developed a 2.5D HCP small loop EM modeling algorithm using extended Born approximation, which does not require transformation. Also, we checked its validity by comparison with other numerical results.

  • The sea dike is the most important facility of reclamation projects, and plays an important role in securing freshwater in the reservoir. Systematic research on practical approaches and data analysis techniques are lacking even though some geophysical methods such as electrical resistivity and self-potential surveys are included within the inspection processes. Hence, geophysical methods were considered for improvement of precision safety diagnosis methods after problems in the maintenance system have been identified, such as safety checks and precision safety diagnoses. In addition, geophysical methods customized according to variations in ambient environmental limiting factors such as pore pressure changes by tidal fluctuation, compaction characteristics of the fill materials, and the surface condition of the embankment were suggested.

  • This paper presents mobile robot based down-scale mineral resources exploration test system for the USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Network) based exploration. The system emulates the actual exploration environment. Underneath the metal free test plate, a metal object is attached. A magneto-meter mounted mobile robot runs around on the plate to find the metal. The measured magneto-meter values are transferred to the host PC via wireless network. The system enables to improve the reliability of simulation as well as to help efficient exploration system design. Metal-detecting experiments were carried out to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed system.

  • Several geophysical surveys(electrical resistivity, electromagnetic, seismic refraction, CPR) were conducted to primarily investigate the gallery and the geomembrane at an abandoned mine(Imcheon mine). The subsurface structure mapped from seismic refraction survey mainly consists of three velocity layers(>1000 m/s, 1000∼2000 m/s,<2000 m/s). Top of the bedrock, whose velocities exceed 2000 m/s, appears to be at depth of 7.5∼10m. Higher resistivities (of ten thousands-hundred of thousands ohm-m) are interpreted to be associated with a open(cavities) gallery. The events at depth of approximately 0.5∼0.7m in GPR sections are probably caused by high-density-poly-ethylene geomembrane. Taking into consideration of the differences in the spatial resolution between georadar and electrical surveys, the events of geomembrane correspond to the top of the high resistivities at depth of about 2m. The segments, characterized with the higher conductivities in the electromagnetic data and the lower resistivities in the electrical resistivity data, are probably associated with surface water or tear zone of geomembrane.
