Although microorganisms play an important role in composting process, researches on the effective microorganism (EM) in composting process are rarely reported. In this study, three stages of work performed 1) investigation of composting facility 2) sample collection and isolation of the EM 3) lab-scale composting by seeding the isolated EM. For this, purpose, physical, chemical, and biological characteristics, such as temperature, moisture content, organic matter, pH population of microorganism, etc., were investigated during the process and the results were compared with those of a control(non-seeded). In the composting facility, the most active degradation of food waste was suppsed to occur in 10-11th day of composting by observing the temperature and CO2 emission. The population of bacterial and fungi was highest in thermophilic stage. Meanwhile that of actinomycetes and yeast was relatively uniform during the process. In the lab-scale test, the thermophilic stage was maintained longer(more than 9 days in 17 days of experiment) in the seeded which was favored for the high reduction of organic matter and moisture. Reduction rates of lipids and salinity were also increased in the seeded. It confirmed these results that the population of microorganisms in the seeded was observed higher in several orders than the control. However, pH of the seeded was maintained as low as about 4.5 throughout the experiment except the final period of the process. Meanwhile, pH of the control rose in the early stage of the experiment. This was probably due that the seeded microorganisms collected from the composting facility was adapted to the low pH environment.
The voluntary agreement between industries and government on the recycling of wastes has been analysed. The agreement is one of the threatened voluntary agreements. Theoretically these agreements make it possible to fulfill recycling goals with minimized cost. It is the objective of this paper to evaluate the efficiency of the voluntary agreement on recycling wastes by examining of Nash Equilibrium. In the first place, the equilibrium of a bilateral agreement between the representative of industries (association of firms) and government will be analysed to confirm if cost minimization strategies by the association result in a sub-game perfect Nash Equilibrium. This is followed by an analysis of a multilateral agreement among the members of the association to see how the equilibrium and efficiency conditions change. We tried to find some implications that the result of the analysis casts on the environmental policy matters.
We isolated and identified a microorganism which was excellent for ammonia oxidation in the biological control of ammonia gas in odor producing materials from organic composting. The isolated strain was tested for growth characteristics and ammonia elimination efficiency under various conditions of temperature, pH, carbon concentration and ammonia concentration. The strain was isolated from a culture broth used in a $NO_2$ producing test with Griess-Ilosvay reagent. The results of 16S rRNA sequence from the isolated strain by using BLANST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) and confirming RDP (Ribosomal Database Project II) and ERRD (The European Ribosomal RNA Database) indicate that the strain is related to Delftia sp. UV-Spectrophotometer (Shimadzu, UVmini-1240) was used as a microbial growth test by measuring turbidity on OD660nm and ammonia concentration was measured by Spectrophotometer (HACH, DR-4000). The optimum growth culture conditions of the ammonia oxidizer Delftia sp. were $30^{\circ}C$, pH 7, glucose concentration 1.00% and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ 0.5 g/l. Ammonia elimination efficiency was over 94% under the same conditions.
Objectives: We aimed to examine whether dental waste was being managed adequately at different types of dental institutions in City D in South Korea. Methods: The staff responsible for disinfection at 101 dental offices and clinics (six dentistry departments of general hospitals, 12 dental hospitals, and 83 dental clinics) was interviewed. Results: Solid suction pump waste was handled appropriately at four of the general hospital dentistry departments (66.7%), six dental hospitals (50.0%), and 15 dental clinics (18.1%). Solid spittoon waste was handled appropriately at four general hospital dentistry departments (66.7%), seven dental hospitals (58.3%), and 14 dental clinics (16.9%). Developer and fixer were handled appropriately by a subcontractor at two general hospital dentistry departments (100.0%), five dental hospitals (100.0%), and 24 dental clinics (75.0%). Impression materials were handled appropriately at four general hospital dentistry departments (66.7%), six dental hospitals (50.0%), and 11 dental clinics (13.3%). The plastic covers of intra-oral radiography films were handled appropriately at five general hospital dentistry departments (100.0%), eight dental hospitals (72.7%), and 22 dental clinics (30.1%). Conclusion: South Korea must implement detailed and specialized guidelines for the disposal of solid and general medical waste from dental institutions. Moreover, waste disposal training should be provided annually, and not only once every three years.

RFID(Radio Frequency IDentification) is an emerging technology which brings enormous productivity benefits in applications where objects have to be identified automatically. But despite of RFID's advantage, it is not easy to realize the RFID technology in business world. The failure to read RFID tags is the most urgent problem that should be solved for RFID application. Specially, in metal and liquid material, recognition rate of RFID tag is lower than others. Though some special tags for metal and liquid have been invented, it has not prevalent in business world on account of high price. In this paper, styrofoam pad is suggested to improve recognition rate of RFID tag for metal pipe which is used in fish cultivating industry. We makes experiment using Taguchi method and analyze the effects on styrofoam thickness, attachment location of tag, and angle of antenna.

The emission characteristics of mercury in waste incinerators were investigated to get basic data for the policy development on the emission reduction of mercury (Hg). For the study several important factors were analysed from 4 incinerators such as mercury concentration, emission factors and removal rate for control devices. The results are listed below. Mercury concentrations in the flue gas were 0.39~5.96 $\mu\textrm{g}$/S㎥ in MWI and 2.5~8.8 $\mu\textrm{g}$/S㎥ in IWI. The distributions of gaseous and particulate mercury in flue gas were above 99% and below 1 %, respectively. Therefore, in order to remove mercury effectively, it is important to control the gaseous mercury. Mercury concentrations in fly ash collected from control device were found as 16.2~35.6 mg/kg- ash in FF of MWI. Also mercury concentrations at the front and back point of control device of MWI were 33.45~62.65 $\mu\textrm{g}$/S㎥ and 0.88~3.49 $\mu\textrm{g}$/S㎥, respectively. Emission factors were estimated as 3.67~11.67 mg/ton in FF, 2.6~24.5 mg/ton in MWI with SNCR, SDR and FF, 54.9~192.7 mg/ton in IWI with Cyclone and FF. Emissions from Municipal Waste Incinerator were found both in minimum and maximum ranges. Annual mercury emissions emitted from MWI was estimated as 20.0 kg (6.0~33.9 kg).

The emission characteristics of particulate matter (PMs) and heavy metals from hazardous industrial wast incinerators were investigated. The particle size distribution (PSD) of PM-10 showed different patterns for two tripes of incinerators; stoker and rotary kiln. However both types showed bimodal form at inlet of air pollution control devices (APCD) and each peak (mode) is located at smaller than 1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and near 10 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. It could explain the growth of fine PM by nucleation/coagulation/condensation of metal vapors for fine mode. The PSD of PM-10 after APCD was also influenced by APCD types that had different collection mechanism, and both electrostatic precipitator and bag filter showed less collection efficiency for particles ranged from 0.2 to 0.4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and led to a mode in the range of 0.2 to 0.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. However the hag filter showed two modes of PSD, while the electrostatic precipitator had one peak. The PMs and heavy metals emission factors, the representative value of emission quantity for sources, for tested facilities were developed. The emission factor of uncontrolled total PM and PM-10 were 14.7 and 7.05 kg/ton waste, respectively. The emission factors from this study were a little bit different with those from US EPA AP-42. It may thus be appropriate to use these results in the course of developing national emission factors.

Artificial aggregates made by coal fly ash that is classified as an industrial by-product was tested to oxidize hydrogen sulfide under various testing conditions. For the determination of optimum condition for converting coal fly ash to aggregates, specimens were prepared by varying ratio of fly ash, cement, water content, and foaming agent. These specimens were tested to determine specific gravity, water absorption, and compressive strength. Specimens, which were used for the removal of hydrogen sulfide, were selected based on the measured specific gravity, water absorption, and compressive strength. Tests for hydrogen sulfide removal were performed via batch and column tests. Under the testing conditions used in this study, removal rates of hydrogen sulfide were linearly proportional to amounts of coal fly ash, and further increased when water was added.

This study assessed feasibility of making granular fertilizer with fly ash from a sewage sludge incinerator in Korea. Composition, characteristics, strength, and heavy metal contents of the granular fertilizers were investigated. Due to its high contents of phosphorus, fly ash from a sewage sludge incinerator could be used to make fertilizers. Granulation rates (2-4 mm granules) over 80% could be achieved as the fly ash contents were 15% or less of the fertilizer. Leaching tests of the fertilizers, based upon the Korean Standard Methods for Solid Wastes, showed the concentrations of heavy metals less than the risk limits. However, contents analysis of the fertilizers, based upon the Korean Standard Methods for Soils, experienced higher levels of heavy metals than the risk limits as the fly ash content exceeded 7% of the fertilizer. Thus, the fly ash needs to be added less than 7% of the fertilizer if there is no pretreatment to remove heavy metals.

The main objectives of this comparative study were 1) to quantify the potential contribution of wood chips to revegetation on the cut slope in a constructed area, 2) to compare the floristic similarity of species composition whether existing of wood chips in the soil media or not. Wood chips were combined with soil media in the ratio of 30%. The thin layer (1 cm, 3 cm) soil media revegetation methods and the thick layer (10 cm) soil media revegetation method were constructed on the cut slopes by machineries respectively. Also, comparative experiments the existence of wood chips in the soil media were conducted to evaluate the effects of wood chips on revegetation works. The total size of quadrat was $300m^2$ ($100m^2{\times}3$). The results of monitoring for 3 years on cut slopes were as follows: 1) All the quadrat existed in the proper range for vegetation. 2) Species richness of quadrat including wood chips was 10% more than those of commercial soil medias. 3) The coverage rates of quadrat including wood chips were similar or superior to those of conventional methods. It can be concluded that the use of wood chips would be effective to promote establishment of diverse landscape and vegetation. However, it behooves to continue monitoring on succession of vegetation for ecological restoration. Finally, adequate wood chips deposit and gathering methods should be studied properly.
