  • BACKGROUND: From year 2005, landfill for food waste has been prohibited. Also, according to London agreement in year 2013, ocean discharge for livestock manure, sewage sludge, and food waste has been regulated. Alternative way for food waste disposal is incineration. However, due to high moisture content, additional input for energy is needed. Therefore, effective way for food waste disposal such as application of food waste compost is needed. METHODS AND RESULTS: Seven different treatments (livestock compost, food waste compost, food waste + livestock compost, livestock compost + chemical fertilizer, food waste compost + chemical fertilizer, food waste + livestock compost + chemical fertilizer and control) were applied to tomato crop. All treatments were replicated with completely randomized design. Tomato growth treated with LC+NPK showed the highest values at 6 weeks for all parameters such as leaf length (11.80 cm), leaf width (6.88 cm), and chlorophyll (61.12 O.D.), compared to other treatments. Subsequently the FWC+LC+NPK treatment was followed (11.51 cm, 6.40 cm, 59.50 O.D. for leaf length, leaf width, and chlorophyll, respectably). EC, OM contents, and CEC in the soil treated with the composts significantly increased. CONCLUSION: To evaluate the effect of food waste compost application on tomato growth and soil chemical properties, we carried out field experiment treated with 7 treatments with 3 replicates. The LC+NPK treatment showed highest values for all parameters. Some parameters such as shoot length and total length for tomato were not significantly different between the LC+NPK and the FWC+LC+NPK treatments.

  • It was found that there was no problem in recycling by-products (waste rock and tailings) from Yangyang iron mine themselves through matter conversion because they are not hazardous according to results of KSLT method. In case of using tailings as sub-materials of cement, it recommended the use of less than 3% tailings dosage not to exceed 0.6% of total alkali ($R_2O$) content based on standard quality of portland cement (KS L 5201). Non sintered eco-brick corresponding to class 1 quality of recycled clay brick (KS I 3013) can replace 15% of cement with tailings and 100% of general fine aggregate with waste rock from iron mine. As mentioned above, recycling the by-products (waste rock and tailings) as sub-materials of cement and non sintered eco-brick could gain both environmental and economic benefits, that is, reduction of scale and maintenance cost of tailing ponds, decrease of energy use and $CO_2$ emission.

  • This study evaluates heavy metal(Cu and Cr) adsorption characteristics produced from food waste charcoal extracted in an optimal operation condition after analyzing activated charcoal of iodine adsorption and heavy metals that derived from an activation process of carbide by the developed by-products of food waste treatment facility using the methods from previous studies. As experiment apparatus, this study used a tube-shaped high temp furnace. The mixing ratio of by-products of food waste treatment facility, carbide, and activation component($ZnCl_2$) was 1:1. The experiment was proceeded as adjusting the activation temperature from 400 to $800^{\circ}C$ and activation time from 30 to 120 minutes. The optimal activation condition for iodine absorption was 90 minutes at $700^{\circ}C$ and by using the produced food waste charcoal, this study conducted an experiment on absorption of heavy metals (Cu and Cr) as changing pH of artificial wastewater and stirring time. As a result, pH 7 showed the highest heavy metal decontamination ratio and in terms of stirring time, it revealed balance adsorption after 10 minutes. This result can be particularly applied as basic data for recyclability of high concentration organic waste, by-products of food waste treatment facility, as an food waste charcoal.

  • This study aims to analyze region-specific trends in changing greenhouse gas emissions in incineration plants of local government where waste heat generated during incineration are reused for the recent five years (2009 to 2013). The greenhouse gas generated from the incineration plants is largely $CO_2$ with a small amount of $CH_4$ and $N_2O$. Most of the incineration plants operated by local government produce steam with waste heat generated from incineration to produce electricity or reuse it for hot water/heating and resident convenience. And steam in some industrial complexes is supplied to companies who require it for obtaining resources for local government or incineration plants. All incineration plants, research targets of this study, are using LNG or diesel fuel as auxiliary fuel for incinerating wastes and some of the facilities are using LFG(Landfill Gas). The calculation of greenhouse gas generated during waste incineration was according to the Local Government's Greenhouse Emissions Calculation Guideline. As a result of calculation, the total amount of greenhouse gas released from all incineration plants for five years was about $3,174,000tCO_2eq$. To look at it by year, the biggest amount was about $877,000tCO_2eq$ in 2013. To look at it by region, Gyeonggido showed the biggest amount (about $163,000tCO_2eq$ annually) and the greenhouse gas emissions per capita was the highest in Ulsan Metropolitan City(about $154kCO_2eq$ annually). As a result of greenhouse gas emissions calculation, some incineration plants showed more emissions by heat recovery than by incineration, which rather reduced the total amount of greenhouse gas emissions. For more accurate calculation of greenhouse gas emissions in the future, input data management system needs to be improved.

  • The behavior of porous medium is modeled by linear thermoporoelastic behavior, linear poroviscoelastic behavior, poroplastic behavior, and poroviscoplastic behavior, etc. The behavior has, in general, a complicated aspect which makes a mechanical description of the problem with time. Constitutive modeling for deformation behavior of porous medium with coupling effects is needed since there is interaction between the constituents in pores with a relative velocity to each other. In this work, it is explained 3-dimensional behavior depending on degree of saturation for porous medium composed of homogeneous, isotropic materials. It is obtained the governing equations based on continuum porous mechanics. In addition, it is developed constitutive model which can be understood of behavior for porous medium which can be understood, analysed behavior of porous medium. It can be accomplished exact analysis and prediction of behavior in porous medium. The behavior for porous medium is analysed exactly, and the prediction of deformation behavior is accomplished. Consequently, it will be basis to analyze 3-dimensional behavior in municipal solid waste landfill, and the practical using of porous medium ground which are composed of nonhomogeneous, anisotropic materials can be done widely.

  • In general steel sheet piles are used in the containment system, which are vertical barrier systems for waste disposal and landfill purposes, and roads in excavation for temporary structure. This paper presents case study of the use of an interlocking sheet pile for water and containment. Cut-off Z-type sheet pile joints are investigated to determine their permeability from the field test. Four different joint sealing materials are used in field test. The results showed joint permeability is significant time-dependent and joint-dependent. These are explored and conclusions on permeability characteristics of different sealants are noted. A case study gives a design example as well as suggestion on permeability and water tightness can be implemented in using the sheet pile barrier in civil and environment works. From the test results, the effective sealing programs of sheet pile interlocks are suggested.

  • In this study, the physical and chemical characteristics of incinerated pulp and sewage sludge ashes for recycling and reuse were examined. Then we studied the application to the cement admixture by pozzolanic reaction. The particle size of incinerated pulp and sewage sludge ashes was distributed around $10{\sim}100{\mu}$, and the contents of $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ were 45.8~51.0%, respectively. Compressive strengths of the solidified ashes were relatively higher, when the content of substituted incineration ashes was 10% and the porosity was also lower except for the case of sewage sludge ash. As results, it is shown that it may be possible to recycle incinerated pulp sludge ashes as cement admixtures.

  • This paper is focused on an experimental study in order to investigate the utilization of sewage sludge ash as the cover and liner materials for the waste disposal landfill or as construction materials. A series of tests were performed to evaluate the basic properties, compaction, compressive strength, consolidation, permeability, and CBR of sewage ash. Specially, clay bricks were made as increasing replacement ratio of sewage ash (such as 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30%). And tests were fulfilled for its quality. Bentonite and lime were used as the additives to improve permeability properties of sewage sludge ash. As a result of tests, it was shown that the permeability coefficient decreases as increasing bentonite content and the percentage of bentonite was roughly needed 20% to keep the permeability coefficient below $1{\times}10^{-7}cm/sec$. The results of unconfined compression tests show that sewage ash meets the criteria of the unconfined compression strength for cover material. It was shown that the compressive strength decreases as increasing the replacement ratio of sewage sludge ash and the maximum replacement ratio of sewage sludge ash to satisfy the quality standards of the third degree bricks was about 15%.

  • In this study, a recycling plan for waste concrete fine aggregate as fill material was researched by investigating environmental engineering properties. It is noted that the environmental influence of waste concrete fine aggregate is little since chemical level is satisfied the waste management standard. Waste concrete fine aggregate is not suitable for materials of anti-frost layer and sub-base layer since the particle-size distribution and engineering properties are not partially satisfied the quality standard. However, waste concrete fine aggregate can be recycled as materials of anti-frost layer and sub-base layer if we improve the engineering properties by mixing bigger aggregates than maximum particle size (5 mm) more than 25 percent of total weight.

  • The investigation was carried out to analyze the generation and the composition of landfill gas generated from inserted pipe wells into the underground by boring operation and also study the undecomposed waste characteristics by open-cut test at S. waste landfill site in Pusan city. Pilot test was conducted for stabilization. The experimental results from this study were summerized as follows. ; Since COD matter was easuer decomposed than COD matter for continuously biological stabilization in underground, it seemed that BOD and CO $D_{Mn}$ were in the range of 854~4,813mg/$\ell$ and 1,156~6,977mg/$\ell$ and their ratio were generally as high as 0.55~0.74. As C $H_4$ compositions of generated gas were measured in the range of 37.36~60.1%, we could know that C $H_4$ gas was actively generated. Organic matters by open-cut test averaged 13.4~16.6% at each landfill layer, and considering rate of combustible compositions(36.2~66.5%) for landfilling wastes, they have been actively decomposed. The measured and theoretical values of generated gas in waste landfill site were almost similar to C $H_4$ 50.0% and 53.4%, $CO_2$ 39.63% and 45.24%, and after 0.5$^{\circ}C$ with heavy depth and long landfill period. From the results of pilot test for stabilization, after 180 days organic matters were actively decomposed beyond 2.2 times in facultative aerobic lystimeter(B) to exsiting anaerobic lysimeter(A). Therefore, it seemed that landfill site was of benefical to the conversion of facultative aerobic for stabilization.
