  • Botanical insecticides derived from plant extracts exhibit repellent, antifeedant and enzyme-inhibiting activities against insect pests. Among such pests, phytophagous mites are major threats to horticultural crops. Botanical extracts derived from neem, chrysanthemum, and shrubby sophora are employed as field acaricides. These botanical extracts have low toxicities against natural enemies of the insect pests and, thus, are valuable in pest management. This review focuses on the potential for botanical extracts in the controls of mites, with comparisons of the spectrum of activity, the lethal dose and times and their mode of action. This information will enable better formulation of botanical extracts in integrated mite control.

  • Many irrigated and drainage canals, reservoirs, lakes, and rivers are choked by the explosive growth of aquatic weeds, resulting in enormous direct loss in Korea. Distribution of aquatic weeds and exotic invasive plant species in irrigation and drainage waterways, and riparian wetlands was reviewed to provide basic information for management of aquatic weeds and invasive plant species in wetlands. Dominant emergent weeds in canals, reservoirs and lakes were Phragmites communis, Leersia japonica, Zizania latifolia, Conyza canadensis, C. annuus, Rumex crispus, Panicum dichotomiflorum, Bidens frondosa, and Oenothera odorata. Dominant emergent weeds in wetlands of rivers include Digitaria sanguinalis, P. communis, R. crispus, Artemisia princeps, Humulus japonicus, Echinochloa crusgalli, B. frondosa, and Persicaria thunbergii. In irrigation and drainage canals and lakes, dominant submersed weeds were Hydrilla verticillata, Najas minor, Potamogeton malaianus, P. crispus, Ceratophyllum demersum, Myriophyllum verticillatum, Salvinia natans, and Trapa natans. Dominant exotic weeds in wetlands include Trifolium repens, O. odorata, C. annuus, B. frondosa, Avena fatua, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, X. strumarium, and P. dichotomiflorum. Approaches to aquatic weed control were mechanical, chemical and biological control techniques. Periodic monitoring of aquatic weeds and exotic weeds, and their integrated management studies are needed in waterways and riparian wetlands in Korea.

  • This study was performed to develop a formulation using an antagonistic bacterium Bacillus amyloliquefaciens A-2 to control tomato leaf mold caused by Fulvia fulva. B. amyloliquefaciens A-2 was grown in a medium with rice oil and mixed with various carrier and additives. One of the formulations, A2-MP, showed the best disease control value among the tested formulations. The disease control value of A2-MP at 100-fold and 500-fold diluted treatment was not significantly different from that of chemical fungicide triflumizole in a growth chamber. Although disease control effect was decreased by serial diluted treatment of the prepared A2-MP, 1,000-fold diluted treatment of A2-MP still showed high disease control value of 72.0%. For the green house experiments, the disease control values of A2-MP was indicated as 79.4% which is similar to that of chemical fungicide, triflumizole showing 79.6%. When the disease control activity of the formulation A2-MP was compared in tomato production conditions, disease control values of 100-fold diluted A2-MP and 3,000 fold diluted triflumizole exhibited 60%, 81.6%, respectively. The disease control efficiency by A-2MP was 73% of the disease control value of chemical fungicide. The formulation A-2MP maintained the stable bacterial viability and disease control activity when stored at $4^{\circ}C$. This result suggested that A-2MP develped from B. amyloliquefaciens A-2 could be used to control tomato leaf mold.

  • To evaluate the damage of broad mite, Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks), on pepper growth and yield, broad mite females were infested on pepper seedlings. In plots infested with 1, 2, and 5 females/plant, pepper growth was significantly reduced after 10 weeks with growth rates of 264, 256, and 177%, respectively, while that of control plot was 337%. Total pepper yields in the plots infested with 1, 2, and 5 females/plant were 443.9, 230. 5, and 103.4 kg/lOa, respectively, which were significantly lower than 1, 197.5 kg/lOa of the control plot. Dicofol EC, Chinomethionat WP, Pyridaben WP, and Pyraclofos WP were effective in controlling the broad mite on pepper showing over 90% mortality by 17 days after application. Although the updated reports on the nationwide occurrence of the broad mite damage on pepper showed that most damages were occurring in greenhouses between October and March, damages were observed in late May in certain locality.

  • Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) possesses various biological and pharmacological properties. Damping-off is a critical disease on ginseng seedlings, which is caused by the fungal pathogens Rhizoctonia solani and Pythium sp.. This disease is generally controlled by the application of fungicides, but also biological control is an efficient and environmentally friendly way to prevent ginseng damping-off. In a previous study, we screened soil-borne bacteria with potential applications as biological control agents for ginseng damping-off and selected the bacterial strain Streptomyces sp. A3265, producing antifungal substances guanidylfungin and methylguanidylfungin. In this study, we investigated control efficacy of Streptomyces sp. A3265 against ginseng damping-off in the field. As a result, the incidence of damping-off was significantly reduced when soaking ginseng seeds in the culture broth of Streptomyces sp. A3265.

  • A new disease causing skin sooty dapple symptoms on fruits, leaves, and young shoot of Asian pear occurred in Korea. However, no chemical control approaches has been developed to control this disease. To investigate ecological aspects of this disease, we conducted field surveys in the high or low disease occurred orchards. The years with heavy rainfall caused severe occurrence of the skin sooty dapple disease than the years with lower rainfall during all growth stages of pear fruit. Different fruit-wrapping bags did not prevent occurrence of skin sooty dapple disease, and lesion numbers were higher in lower parts of fruit equatorial line inside of fruit-wrapping bags. There is a direct correlation between occurrence of the skin sooty dapple disease and frequency of fungicide application in the orchards. Among the tested commercial fungicides, thiophanate-methyl WP and penconazole WP completely inhibited the growth of the Cladosporium sp. in in vitro studies but little protection was observed in the field following fungicide applications. However, application of lime sulfur combined with the use of fruit-wrapping bags most effectively reduced incidence of the disease in the field. Our results suggest that skin sooty dapple disease could be a serious problem in sustainable organic pear farms and effective control methods for this disease urgently required.

  • Oil budget calculator identifies the removal pathways of spilled oil by both natural and response methods, and estimates the remaining oil required response activities. A oil budget calculator was newly developed as a response tool for Deepwater Horizon oil spill incident in Gulf of Mexico in 2010 to inform clean up decisions for Incident Comment System, which was also successfully utilized to media and general public promotion of oil spill response activities. This study analyzed the theoretical background of the oil budget calculator and explored its future application to Korea. The oil budge calculation of four catastrophic marine pollution incidents indicates that 3~8% of spilled oil was removed mechanically by skimmers, 1~5% by in-situ burning, 4.8~16% by chemical dispersion due to dispersant operation, and 37~56% by weathering processes such as evaporation, dissolution, and natural dispersion. The results show that in-situ burning and chemical dispersion effectively remove spilled oil more than the mechanical removal by skimming, and natural weathering processes are also very effective to remove spilled oil. To apply the oil budget calculator in Korea, its parameters need to be optimized in response to the seasonal characteristics of marine environment, the characteristics of spilled oil and response technologies. A new algorithm also needs to be developed to estimate the oil budget due to shoreline cleanup activities. An oil budget calculator optimized in Korea can play a critical role in informing decisions for oil spill response activities and communicating spill prevention and response activities with the media and general public.

  • Gamma irradiation and its convergence with nano-silver particles and sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) were investigated to inhibit germination and mycelial growth of Botrytis elliptica, the pathogen of lily leaf blight. In addition, the same treatments were studied on the process of disease development with detached leaf of lily cv. Siberia. Spray inoculation, which is closer to natural infection than wound inoculation, can be a way to investigate infection ability of the treated pathogen. The irradiating dose required to reduce the population by 90%, $D_{10}$, was 526 Gy irradiating with 0-2000 Gy gamma ray on the conidial suspension as well as the growing mycelia. Even at 2000 Gy, the mycelium was not killed but just delayed its growth at 1-2 days behind. Convergent treatment with 40 mg/l of NaDCC just before 200 Gy gamma irradiation was the best way to decrease the conidial germination about 1/1000 times. The control values of gamma irradiation were 23% and 19.5% at wound inoculation and spray inoculation, respectively. On wound-inoculation, the control value of NaDCC only was 89%, and that of NaDCC convergent with 200 Gy gamma irradiation was 32%. On sprayinoculation, the highest control value was NaDCC at 50%, and that of NaDCC convergent with gamma irradiation was 24%.
