Sea surface wind is one of the most fundamental variables for understanding diverse marine phenomena. Although scatterometers have produced global wind field data since the early 1990's, the data has been used limitedly in oceanic applications due to it slow spatial resolution, especially at coastal regions. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is capable to produce high resolution wind field data. KOMPSAT-5 is the first Korean satellite equipped with X-band SAR instrument and is able to retrieve the sea surface wind. This study presents the validation results of sea surface wind derived from the KOMPSAT-5 backscattering coefficient data for the first time. We collected 18 KOMPSAT-5 ES mode data to produce a matchup database collocated with buoy stations. In order to calculate the accurate wind speed, we preprocessed the SAR data, including land masking, speckle noise reduction, and ship detection, and converted the in-situ wind to 10-m neutral wind as reference wind data using Liu-Katsaros-Businger (LKB) model. The sea surface winds based on XMOD2 show root-mean-square errors of about $2.41-2.74m\;s^{-1}$ depending on backscattering coefficient conversion equations. In-depth analyses on the wind speed errors derived from KOMPSAT-5 backscattering coefficient data reveal the existence of diverse potential error factors such as image quality related to range ambiguity, discrete and discontinuous distribution of incidence angle, change in marine atmospheric environment, impacts on atmospheric gravity waves, ocean wave spectrum, and internal wave.

The carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) is very important, because the severity of it is an independent predictor of transient cerebral ischemia, stroke, and coronary events such as myocardial infarction. The conventional image processing to measure the IMT has not been satisfactory, because the methods have relied on the manual section drawing and a regional segmentation by differential estimation. We propose a new image processing technology effective to extract features from the carotid artery image whose pixels have the directional vector properties with composed color distribution. The technique we presented here is not by differential variation but by verification of the layer properties of carotid artery image. Iterated vertical and horizontal analysis and segmentation of the IMT image show the vector characteristics. This new technique makes it possible to cluster the layers statistically, and to classify mathematical correlation between regions and resulting in correct measurements of thickness and its variation. The advantages and effectiveness of this approach are applicable to region process and character extraction of such a vector image.

This paper proposes an illuminant estimation algorithm that estimates the spectral power distribution of an incident light source from a single image. The proposed illumination recovery procedure has two phases. First, the surface spectral reflectances are recovered in the maximum achromatic region (MAR) which is the most achromatic and highly bright region of an image after removing partially the effect of illumination using a modified gray world algorithm. Here, the surface reflectances of MAR are estimated using the principal component analysis method along with a set of given 1269 Munsell samples. Second, the Population of reflected lights is determined with 1269 Munsell samples and a set of illuminations then the spectral distribution of re(looted lights of MAR is selected from the spectral database. That is, color differences are compared between the reflected lights of the MAR and the spectral database, which is the set of reflected lights built by the given set of Munsell samples and illuminants. Then the closest colors from the spectral database are selected. Finally, the illuminant of an image can be calculated dividing the average spectral distributions of reflected lights of MAR by the average surface reflectances of the MAR. In order to evaluate the proposed algorithm, experiments with artificial scenes, which are exposed to chromatic illuminants, were performed and the spectral distribution of estimated illumination and color difference are compared with results of the conventional method.

A knowledge-based image retrieval technique is image searching methods using some features from the queried image. The materials in this study are automobile head lamps. The input data is composed of characters and images which have various pattern. The numbers, special symbols, and general letters are under the category of the character. The image informations are made up of the distribution of pixel data, statistical analysis, and state of pattern which are useful for the knowledge data. In this paper, we implemented a retrieval system for the scientific crime detection at traffic accident using the proposed multi knowledge-based image retrieval technique. The values for the multi knowledge-based image features were extracted from color and gray scale each. With this 22 features, we improved the retrieval efficiency about the color information and pattern information. Visual basic, crystal report and MS access DB were used for this application. We anticipate the efficient scientific detection for the traffic accident and the tracking of suspicious vehicle.

An image retrieval system based on image content is a key issue for building and managing large multimedia database, such as art galleries and museums, trademarks and copyrights, and picture archiving and communication system. Therefore, the interest on the subject of content-based image retrieval has been greatly increased for the last few years. This paper proposes a feature-based image retrieval technique which uses a compound feature vector representing both of color and shape of an image. Color information for the feature vector is obtained using the algebraic moment of each pixel of an image based on the property of regional color distribution. Shape information for the feature vector is obtained using the Improved Moment Invariant(IMI) which reduces the quantity of computation and increases retrieval efficiency. In the preprocessing phase for extracting shape feature, we transform a color image into a gray image. Since we make use of the modified DCT algorithm, it is implemented easily and can extract contour in real time. As an experiment, we have compared our method with previous methods using a database consisting of 150 automobile images, and the results of the experiment have shown that our method has the better performance on retrieval effectiveness.

Most image segmentation methods are to represent observed feature vectors at each pixel, which are assumed as appropriated probability models. These models can be used by statistical estimating or likelihood clustering algorithms of feature vectors. EM algorithms have some calculation problems of maximum likelihood for unknown parameters from incomplete data and maximum value in post probability distribution. First, the performance is dependent upon starting positions and likelihood functions are converged on local maximum values. To solve these problems, we mixed the Gausian function and histogram at all the level values at the image, which are proposed most suitable image segmentation methods. This proposed algoritms are confirmed to classify most edges clearly and variously, which are implemented to MFC programs.
We applied an ellipsometric technique to get quantitative information about the thickness and refractive index of human Mesenchymal Stem Cells (hMSCs). The images of ellipsometric constants $\Delta$, $\Psi$ for the nucleus region and for the cell body region of hMSCs were obtained by using an Imaging Ellipsomter (IE) for their in vitro state. A numerical inversion method was applied to deduce the refractive index and the thickness of hMSCs from the measured $\Delta$, $\Psi$. Thus the images of the refractive index and those of the thickness of hMSCs for the nucleus region and for the cell body region are reported.

To convert printed images into electronic ones automatically, it requires region analysis of document images and character recognition. In these, regional analysis segments document image into detailed regions and classifies thee regions into the types of text, picture, table and so on. But it is difficult to classify the text and the picture exactly, because the size, density and complexity of pixel distribution of some of these are similar. Thu, misclassification in region analysis is the main reason that makes automatic conversion difficult. In this paper, we propose region analysis method that segments document image into text and picture regions. The proposed method solves the referred problems using one dimensional median filter based method in text and picture classification. And the misclassification problems of boldface texts and picture regions like graphs or tables, caused by using median filtering, are solved by using of skin peeling filter and maximal text length. The performance, therefore, is better than previous methods containing commercial softwares.

To investigate accuracy of intensity method for measurement of the fiber orientation distribution, fiber orientation function is calculated by drawing simulation figures for the fiber orientation as varying fiber aspect ratio, fiber area ratio, and fiber orientation state, respectively. The values of fiber orientation function measured by intensity method are compared with the calculated values of fiber orientation function. The results show that measurement accuracy of the fiber orientation angle distribution by intensity method is affected by the fiber aspect ratio when the total length of oriented fiber is same. The average gradient of fiber orientation function is 0.94 for 1000mm of the total fiber length and is 0.93 for 2000 mm when the fiber aspect ratio is over 50. Measurement accuracy by intensity method is about 94% and the reliable data can be obtained by intensity method.
This paper presents a multi-depth map fusion method for the 3D scene reconstruction. It fuses depth maps obtained from the stereo matching technique and the depth camera. Traditional stereo matching techniques that estimate disparities between two images often produce inaccurate depth map because of occlusion and homogeneous area. Depth map obtained from the depth camera is globally accurate but noisy and provide a limited depth range. In order to get better depth estimates than these two conventional techniques, we propose a depth map fusion method that fuses the multi-depth maps from stereo matching and the depth camera. We first obtain two depth maps generated from the stereo matching of 3-view images. Moreover, a depth map is obtained from the depth camera for the center-view image. After preprocessing each depth map, we select a depth value for each pixel among them. Simulation results showed a few improvements in some background legions by proposed fusion technique.
