  • This study was conducted to develope new indoor plants and to investigate the effects of light intensity on the growth of $Distylium$ $racemosum$, $Osmanthus$ $heterophyllus$ and $Damnacanthus$ $indicus$ under 100 lux, 1,000 lux and 2,500 lux fluorescent lighting for six months in the environment-controlled growth chambers. 1. $Distylium$ $racemosum$ : Most of $Distylium$ $racemosum$ under 100 lux light intensity were blighted in two months, whereas it was 100% of survival under 1,000 lux and 2,500 lux after six months. Plant height, number of leaf, leaf width and leaf length became higher as light intensity increased. The plants maintained under 2,500 lux showed the greatest plant height and leaf number. 2. $Osmanthus$ $heterophyllus$ : $Osmanthus$ $heterophyllus$ under 100 lux light intensity were blighted in two months, whereas it was 100% of survival under 1,000 lux and 2,500 lux after six months. However, under 1,000 lux, it paused plant height and was not increased in leaf number any more. A plant growth status showed the highest value under 2,500 lux in all conditions. 3. $Damnacanthus$ $indicus$ : $Damnacanthus$ $indicus$ was defoliated and blighted under 100 lux light intensity in two months, whereas it was grown properly with 1,000 lux or above. However, the growth under 2,500 lux of $Damnacanthus$ $indicus$ was superior to other treatments. But, $Damnacanthus$ $indicus$ under 1,000 lux after 6 months was more favorable chlorophyll contents, leaf length and leaf width than 2,500 lux. As increasing slightly of chlorophyll contents and leaf growth under 1,000 lux, $Damnacanthus$ $indicus$ could be utilized highly to the indoor ornamental plant.

  • The vegetation of Saeng-il Island was surveyed over four times from July, 1979 to May, 1981. The results obtained are summarized as follows: Plants of this island consisted of 3 foma, 28 varieties, 211 species, 203 genera, and 89 families. Evergreen broad-leaved trees consisted of 24 species, including Camellia japonica and Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii. The vegetatiion of the southwest slope was more favorable than that of the northeast slope and the vegetation of other areas were negligible. Pueraria thunbergiana and Clerodendron trichotomum were predominant in the area between Yucheon-ri and Geummo-ri. Evergreen broad-leaved trees, such as Camellia Japonica, Neolitsea sencea, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii, etc. were predominated in the areas of Gulzeon-ri, Yongchul-ri and Geummo-ri. However, artificial succession to pinus thunbergii presently dominating the areas has taken place due to human interferences (for charcaol, building materials, grazing etc.). It seems to be worthy of conserving the community of Camellia japonica on the back slope of Geummo-ri and that of Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii between Gulzeon-ri and Hangdo-dong. It is notceable, in particular, that Damnacanthus indicus distributed in Jeju and Dolsan islands was also discovered in this island.

  • This study was carried out to identify the long-term changes to beech forest due to climate change in Ulleung-do. To study the traits of the stand structure of beech forest with micro-topography, we investigated the distribution of the basal area, important values, and indicated species in a small ridge between Albong basin and Seongin-bong peak, and 1-ha stands (20 m × 20 m, 25 sites) dominated beech species including on the upper slope and valley parts. The result showed that the indicator species characterizing the vegetation communities were Tsuga sieboldii, Rhododendron brachycarpum, and Mitchella undulata in the small ridge and Celtis jessoensis, Dryopteris crassirhizoma, and Ulmus laciniata in the valley part. Moreover, the individuals with the total DBH < 10 cm were more predominant in the small ridge and upper slope than in the valley part, the individuals with DBH = 10-25 cm were predominant in the small slope, and individuals with DBH = 25-45 cm and DBH > 45 cm were predominant in the upper slope. The reason for the predominant distribution of beech stand with DBH<10 cm in all terrains is suggested to be germination by nutritional propagation rather than secondary succession caused by artificial disturbances and seed propagation.

  • This study investigated in the vascular plants of special protection zones (the native land of Iris koreana in Gaeamsa Temple and Soeppulbawi Rock) of Byeonsanbando National Park and identified the whole flora. The numbers of vascular plants were summarized as 255 taxa including 71 families, 166 genera, 222 species, 2 subspecies, 27 varieties and 4 forms. Woody plants were identified as 114 taxa (44.7%) and herbaceous plants as 141 taxa (55.3%). A total of 178 taxa were identified in the area of Gaeamsa Temple, and 184 taxa were found in the Soeppulbawi Rock. As a legal protected species, the endangered wild plant II grade Iris koreana designated by the Ministry of Environment was confirmed. A total of 6 taxa of rare plants were identified, each of which was divided into 1 taxa of critically endangered (CR; Iris koreana), 1 taxa of vulnerable (VU; Ilex cornuta), and 4 taxa of least concern (LC; Asarum maculatum, Viola albida, Chionanthus retusa and Tricyrtis macropoda). The Korean endemic plants were 11 taxa (Populus tomentiglandulosa, Lonicera subsessilis, Carex okamotoi, etc.). In the specific plants by floristic region were 38 taxa, a degree I were 23 taxa (Euscaphis japonica, Hedera rhombea, Lophatherum gracile, etc.), 7 taxa of a degree II (Viola violacea, Ainsliaea apiculata, Cephalanthera falcata, etc.), 6 taxa of a degree III (Ilex cornuta, Callicarpa mollis, Mitchella undulata, etc.), 1 taxa of a degree IV (Carex remotiuscula), 1 taxa of a degree V (Iris koreana). The Iris koreana special protection area that is more natural and healthier than any other areas in Byeonsanbando National Park. Therefore, it should be possible to continue its role as a special protection area through regular monitoring in the future.
