  • A heavy storm hit the central part of the Korean Peninsula especially on the Chungju Dam Basin from the 9th to 12th of September 1990. The Chungju multipurpose dam is the largest water project in Korea completed in 1986. The storm recorded a peak inflow of about $21,000m^3/sec$ at the dam site which is equivalent to 500 to 1000 years recurring frequency according to the designed concept. Extensive hydrological analyses including field investigation were performed to identify the storm. The result of the field investigation showed that 6 gages among the 22 telemetering rain-gages located in the basin were proved to be out-of-normal operation during the storm. The corrected basin average rainfall was estimated to be 458.6 mm ranging from 206 to 665 mm. The correction of the rainfall depth included the adjustment of the rainfall depths of the 6 gages using the Kriging interpolation technique, and adjustment according to the heights of the gage mouths. For the maintenance and operation of the Chungju Dam, new design floods were suggested from the trend analysis which showed that the design flood have to be increased because of the increasing tendency of the annual flood peaks.

  • Accelerated soil erosion due to extreme climate change, such as increased rainfall intensity, and human-induced environmental changes, is a widely recognized problem. Existing soil erosion models are generally based on the gross erosion concept to compute annual upland soil loss in tons per acre per year. However, such models are not suitable for event-based simulations of erosion and deposition in time and space. Recent advances in computer geographic information system (GIS) technologies have allowed hydrologists to develop physically based models, and the trend in erosion prediction is towards process-based models, instead of conceptually lumped models. This study aims to propose an effective and robust distributed rainfall-sediment yield-runoff model consisting of basic element modules: a rainfall-runoff module based on the kinematic wave method for subsurface and surface flow, and a runoff-sediment yield-runoff model based on the unit stream power method. The model was tested on the Cheoncheon catchment, upstream of the Yongdam dam using hydrological data for three extreme flood events due to typhoons. The model provided acceptable simulation results with respect to both discharge and sediment discharge even though the simulated sedigraphs were underestimated, compared to observations. The spatial distribution of erosion and deposition demonstrated that eroded sediment loads were deposited in the cells along the channel network, which have a short overland flow length and a gentle local slope while the erosion rate increased as rainfall became larger. Additionally, spatially heterogeneous rainfall intensity, dependant on Thiessen polygons, led to spatially-distinct erosion and deposition patterns.

  • The geological and hydrological survey was carried out in Hyuseok-dong landslide area(10 ha), Youngchoon-myeon, Danyang-gun, Choongcheongbuk-do. The results showed that the bed rocks in this area consisted of shale, sandstone and limestone, and the piles of stones debris were also scattered around the hill above the study area. Soil texture was sandy loam, and bulk density of the soil in the lower part of the area was higher than that of the upper part, but void ratio of the soil in the lower part was lower than that of the upper part. Subsurface water was springing out to the surface in many places in this area. In this area, the storms over 70mm/day were frequent during the summer period from June through September. It was concluded that the occurrence of landslide had a close relationship with the geological characteristics, hydrological conditions and the rainfall distribution.

  • Lately, intensity and frequency of natural disasters such as flood are increasing because of abnormal climate. Casualties and property damages due to large-scale floods such as Typhoon Rusa in 2002 and Typhoon Maemi in 2003 rapidly increased, and these show the limits of the existing disaster prevention measures and flood forecasting systems regarding irregular climate changes. In order to efficiently respond to extraordinary flood, it is important to provide effective countermeasures through an inundation model that can accurately simulate flood inundation patterns. However, the existing flood inundation analysis model has problems such as excessive take of analysis time and accuracy of the analyzed results. Therefore, this study conducted a flood inundation analysis by using the Gerris flow solver that uses quadtree grid, targeting the Baeksan Levee in the Nakdong River Basin that collapsed because of a concentrated torrential rainfall in August, 2002. Through comparisons with the FLUMEN model that uses unstructured grid among the existing flood inundation models and the actual flooded areas, it determined the applicability and efficiency of the quadtree grid-based flood inundation model of the Gerris flow solver.

  • This paper presents the results of investigation of the rainstorm induced landslides occurred in the districts of Yongin, Ansung and Osan on July 21st 1991. More than two thousand and sirs hundred landsilides took place during or after a 3-t hours heavy rainfall and about 466 ha mountain slopes were affected by slope failures. The result of study on the effect of-iainfall on landslides shows that landslides began to occur where daily and maximum hourly rainfall exceeded 114mm and 40mm respectively, and all districts (myun) where maximum hourly rainfall exceeded 62mm were affected by landslides. The morphological study on landslides on Talbongsan area reveals that, by Walker's classi fication using D IL(failure depth ratio), 50% of the landslides were classified as flows, 20% of them as translational slides, and 30% were between flow and slide and there were few rotational slides. Over 90% of landslides tookplace at slopes of 20$^{\circ}$-40$^{\circ}$ in slope and 50m or shorter in length And more than 50% of the crown of slides locates at higher than 0.7 times of slope hight. Any differences between the kinds of tree in landslide resisting effects are shown in this case.

  • More than 3,000 landslides were occurred by torrential rains in Gangneung area due to the typhoon Rusa in 2002. In order to analyze the landslide origin and its geometric characteristics, 1,365 landslide data were collected from the field survey of Sacheon, Jumunjin, and Yeongok areas in which the intensive landslides took place. The average landslide size in the study area was composed of 10m width, 30m length, and $21^{\circ}{\sim}35^{\circ}$ slope angle, and the plane view of landslides A-type (i.e. wide shape of lower part) that contains approximately 50.5% of the landslides commonly occurred. In particular the area of Sacheon heavily damaged by mountain fires had more occurrence of landslides than other areas. The landslides of uniform tendency of slope direction were examined resulted from the contribution of topographic characteristics due to the weathering and wind direction during heavy rainfalls. In order to analyze the direction of joint, 249 orientation data were collected from the study area. The window method was employed to determine the characteristics of joint density in 51 locations of the study area. The results showed that many landslides occurred in the areas of joint density with the range of $0.05{\sim}0.1$.

  • The failure of cut slopes frequently occurs particularly during the thawing season and the rain season in summer. This study interpreted data collected from site to which a real-monitoring system was applied in order to analyze the causes of ground behaviors and to forecast future slope failure. As for research methods, this study analyzed the size and mechanism of failure by integrating the results of field surveys and measurements. Furthermore, it analyzed data transmitted by the monitoring system installed in the a result, three times of ground displacement occurred as well as a number of partial tension cracks. The cut slope composed of sandstone and siltstone started its initial behavior as a result of torrential downpour and the loss of support of the substructure. For quantitative analysis of the characteristics of ground behavior, this study measured 5 lateral lines. According to the result of the measurement, displacement happened little in the section to which countermeasure had been applied, but displacement of maximum 400mm happened in the section to which countermeasure had not bee applied. The analysis of data on displacement and rainfall suggested a close relationship between ground behavior and rainfall. According to the result of stability interpretation along with the change of ground saturation, stability rate appeared to be less than 1.0 when ground saturation is over 55%. Although the current trend of ground behavior is at a stable stage falling within the range of tolerance, it is considered necessary to continue monitoring and data analysis because ground displacement is highly possible with the change of temperature during the winter.

  • The frequency and size of typhoon and local severe rainfall are increasing due to the climate change and the damage also increasing from typhoon and severe rainfall. The flood forecasting and warning system to reduce the damage from typhoon and severe rainfall needs forecasted rainfall using radar data and short-term rainfall forecasting model. For this reason, this study examined the applicability of short-term rainfall forecast using translation model with weather radar data to point out that the utilization of flood forecasting in Korea. This study estimated the radar rainfall using Least-square fitting method and estimated rainfall was used as initial field of translation model. The translation model have verified accuracy of forecasted radar rainfall through the comparison of forecasted radar rainfall and observed rainfall quantitatively and qualitatively. Almost case studies showed that accuracy is over 0.6 within 4 hours leading time and mean of correlation coefficient is over 0.5 within 1 hours leading time in Kwanak and Jindo radar site. And, as the increasing the leading time, the forecast accuracy of precipitation decreased. The results of the calculated Mean Area Precipitation (MAP) showed forecast rainfall tend to be underestimated than observed rainfall but the correlation coefficient more than 0.5. Therefore it showed that translation model could be accurately predicted the rainfall relatively. The present results indicate that possibility of translation model application of Korea just within 2 hours leading forecasted rainfall.

  • Recently, the magnitude and frequency of extreme heavy rains and localized heavy rains have increased due to abnormal climate, which caused increased flood damage in river basin. As a result, the nonlinearity of the hydrological system of rivers or basins is increasing, and there is a limitation in that the lead time is insufficient to predict the water level using the existing physical-based hydrological model. This study predicted the water level at Ulsan (Taehwagyo) with a lead time of 0, 1, 2, 3, 6, 12 hours by applying deep learning techniques based on Deep Neural Network (DNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and evaluated the prediction accuracy. As a result, DNN model using the sliding window concept showed the highest accuracy with a correlation coefficient of 0.97 and RMSE of 0.82 m. If deep learning-based water level prediction using a DNN model is performed in the future, high prediction accuracy and sufficient lead time can be secured than water level prediction using existing physical-based hydrological models.
