The Effect and Application of Flow Induction Machine in Artificial Canal Way and Lake through Water Quality Model Test (수질모형실험을 통한 인공수로와 호수에서 흐름유발시설 효과검증 및 적용방법에 관한 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the water pollution problems brought about by the construction of eco-friendly waterfront space through the physical model experiment including water quality consideration. Due to the lack of water supply into the artificial ponds and canals, the water quality problems such as eutrophication, odor and so on can be occurred. There have been many numerical models on such phenomena but limited studies using physical test due to the difficulty in the verification of physical interpretation of the study area. In this study, a prototype model that is not affected by the dimensionless parameters was carried out, where unpolluted water is mixed into the contaminated water to reduce the concentration of nutrients. In addition, this study also attempt to find the optimal configuration of the flow induction machines using the scale model which will evaluate and verify the effectiveness of the enforcement methods to maintain the water quality objectives.

Groundwater-surface water interaction of the upstream area of the dam composed of accumulated sediments and reservoir in the upstream area of Searsvill Dam (Searsville 댐 상류부를 대상으로 한 퇴적토와 저수지로 구성된 지하수 시스템의 지하수-지표수 상호작용)

  • The groundwater-surface water interaction of Searsville Lake area, California, US was analyzed using 3-dimensional groundwater model. This study especially focuses on investigating the groundwater head drawdown near the lake when the abrupt decline of the lake water table occurs due to the implementation of the options to remove the accumulated sediments along the dam. The result of the investigation revealed that the groundwater head drawdown near the lake is not significant enough to adversely affect the wetland habitat of the area regardless of the hydrogeologic parameters of the aquifers. We expect this result provides useful information to the similar Korean case studies in which the surface water level abruptly changes due to the operation of the hydraulic gates of dams and wiers and the corresponding environmental impact should be considered.

Application of Exergy in Aquatic Ecosystems Health Assessment : Experimental Approach and Field Observations (수계 생태계의 건강성 평가 척도로서의 엑서지 적용성에 관한 연구: 실험 및 야외 관찰)

  • The results of field experiments with mesocosms on Lake Baikal, containing natural plankton assemblage, and laboratory experiments with microcosms containing Daphnia magna and Chlorella vulgaris demonstrated decrease of the structural exergy of the communities after the addition of allochtonous compounds peptone, diesel oil, o-diphenol, $CdCl_2$ to mesocosmsassemblage, phenol, $CoCl_2$ and $CuSO_4$ to micro-cosms. Structural exergy changes were more expressed than changes of components biomasses and total biomass of the community. Comparison of exergy content for benthos in cleanand affected by the discharges of Baikalsk Pulp and Paper Combine also showed sufficient docrease of structural exergy in polluted area. It points to the possibility of the use of structural exergy as ecosystem health reflecting parameter.

Community Structure of Plankton in Eutrophic Water Systems with Different Residence Time (체류시간이 서로 다른 부영양 수계에서 플랑크톤군집의 생태학적 특성)

  • To collect the basic ecological information about the microbial food webs in eutrophic water system with different residence time, the monthly variation of bacterioplankon (bacteria and small-sized cyanobacteria) and nanoplankton (phytoplankton and protists) were examined from December 2000 to September 2001. Kyungan stream is shorter in resident time (ca.5.4 d) than Seokchon reservoir (ca.72 d), even though they showed the same pattern in precipitation. With the basic environments, we examined the biomass (standing crops and its carbon content) of each plankton collected from the surface water. Large-sized planktons flourished in the time of low temperature, while small planktons were in the time of the high temperature period. Especially, in the Kyungan stream with much disturbance by rainfall and outflow, high diversity showed in term of species and cell morphology, compared to that of Seokchon lake. The time-lag relationship remarkably showed between phytoplankton and bacteria in Seokchon reservoir, and between protists and bacteria in Kyungan stream, respectively.

Analysis of underwater acoustic communication channel environment in Kyungcheon Lake (경천호에서의 수중 음향 통신 채널 환경 분석)

  • This paper estimated communication parameters according to underwater channel environment of lake for underwater acoustic communication. This paper calculated coherence time and coherence bandwidth through two experiments in actual lake environments. In both experiments, the chirp signal for channel estimation and the BPSK (Binary Phase Shift Keying) signal for calculating the bit error rate were transmitted. In each experiment, the distance between transmitter and receiver was 300 m to 400 m, and 500 m to 600 m. The coherence times calculated in experiment 1 and experiment 2 are 175 msec and 340 msec, and the coherence bandwidths are 10 Hz and 5.71 Hz, respectively. It is confirmed that the experimental results are more appropriate because the synchronization and the bit error rate performance are better only when the length of the synchronization signal and the interval of the pilot signal in the frame are shorter than the coherence time.

The Analysis of the Fish Assemblage Characteristics by Wetland Type (River and lake) of National Wetland Classification System of Wetlands in Gyeongsangnam-do (국가습지유형분류체계의 습지 유형 (하천형과 호수형)에 따른 경남지역 습지의 어류군집 특성 분석)

  • Twenty-nine wetlands (20 river type and 9 lake type wetlands) in Gyeongsangnam-do were investigated to understand the characteristics of fish assemblages by the wetland type and to suggest management strategies. As a result, $10.3{\pm}4.8$ species were collected from river type wetlands on average (${\pm}SD$) and $9.1{\pm}4.1$ species from lake type wetlands. Thus, there was no significant difference in the number of species between them (Mann-Whitney U test, P>0.05). However, the species that constitute the fish assemblage showed statistically significant differences between the two wetland types (PERMANOVA, Pseudo-F=2.9555, P=0.007). Furthermore, the species that contribute the most to each type of fish assemblage were Zacco koreanus (river type, 28.51%) and Lepomis macrochirus (lake type, 23.21%), respectively (SIMPER). The results of the NMDS analysis using the fish assemblage by place classified the species into three groups (river type, lake type, and others). The current wetland management is only focused on endangered species, but this study shows a difference in fish assemblage by wetland type. Therefore, a management system based information on endemic species, exotic species and major contribution species should be provided. Furthermore, the classification of some types of wetlands based on the present topography was found to be ambiguous, and wetland classification using living creatures can be used as a complementary method. This study has limitations because only two types of wetlands were analyzed. Therefore, a detailed management method that can represent every type of wetland should be prepared through the research of all types of wetlands in the future.

A Study on the Use of Wintering Habitats of Water Birds Arriving at Coastal Wetlands in Jeollanam Province, Korea (전라남도 연안습지에 도래하는 수조류의 월동지 이용에 관한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to survey the population of water birds wintering at the seven coastal wetlands of Jeollanam province including Suncheon Bay and Yeongsan Lake, from 2000 through 2003. The 90 species and 857,570 individuals in total were sighted at the seven survey sites. We classified the wintering water birds into seventeen groups of taxa based on the similar ecological attributes, among which, eight groups were found to inhabit the water surface or riparian areas. Classified groups that showed higher rate of using bay areas than that of lake areas were in the order of waders, gulls and swans. On the other hand, the groups that showed higher rate of using lake areas than that of using bay areas were revealed in the order of dabbling ducks, grebes and geese. In conclusion, there was a difference in the pattern between the two classified groups. As a result of the UPGMA cluster analysis using CCs ($S{\varnothing}rensen'a$ index of similarity and Ro (Horn's index of community overlap), the results showed that Suncheon Bay had the most unique species formation out of the seven areas. Bay and lake areas were different from each other in the formation of species and Individuals. As a result of combining the index rank according to the maximum aggregate count, the Suncheon Bay is ranked the highest in importance of the habitats for water birds, followed by the order of Boseong-Deukryang Bay, Gangjin Bay, Gocehongam Lake, Geumho Lake, Yeomam Lake, and Yeongsan Lake. Considered overall, the importance of the bay areas was relatively higher than that of reclaimed lake areas.

Estimation of Water Quality and Trophic State in the Hapcheon Lake (합천호 수질 및 영양단계에 대한 평가)

  • The yearly average water qualities of the Whang river, which flows into the Hapcheon lake, were COD $3.1{\sim}4.2\;mg/L$, T-N $2.460{\sim}3.550\;mg/L$ and T-P $0.111{\sim}0.201\;mg/L$ during $1996{\sim}2001$. The yearly average COD concentration of Hapcheon lake was increased from 1.9 mg/L (in 1996) to 2.7 mg/L (in 2000). However, T-N and T-P concentration of Hapcheon lake did not show increasing trend over the 6 year period During $1996{\sim}2001$, the yearly average concentrations of T-N, T-P were $1.383{\sim}1.792\;mg/L$, $0.018{\sim}0.023\;mg/L$ respectively. The correlation coefficients between chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ and T-N, T-P, rainfall intensity, water temperature were 0.382, 0.372, 0.589, and 0.526, respectively. Therefore, the rainfall and water temperature appeared to play an important role far the variations of chlolophyll ${\alpha}$ concentration in the Hapcheon lake. Trophic state of the Hapcheon lake were evaluated to be in the range of mesotrophic to eutrophic.

A Biogeochemical Study of Heavy Metal Leaching from Coal Fly Ash Disposed in Yeongdong Coal-Fired Power Plant (영동화력발전소에서 방출되는 석탄회로부터 박테리아 활동에 따른 생지화학적 연구)

  • Fly ashes derived from coal fired power plants have unique chemical and mineralogical characteristics. The objective of this research was to study how indigenous bacteria affected heavy metal leaching in fly ash slurry during the fly ash-seawater interactions in the ash pond located in Yeongdong seashore, Korea. The in-situ pH of ash pond seawater was 6.3-8.5. For this study, three sites of the ash pond were chosen to collect a sample of fly ash slurry. Three samples that had a mix of fly ash (0.4 L) and seawater (1.6 L) were collected at each site. First sample was autoclaved ($120^{\circ}C$, 2.5 atm), second one was inoculated with glucose to stimulate the microbial activity, and the last sample was kept in the natural condition. Compared with other samples including autoclaved and natural samples, the glucose added sample showed sharp increase in its alkalinity after 15 days, cation concentration change such as Ca, Mg, and K seemed to increase in early stage, and then decrease 15 days later in slurry solution of glucose added sample, and a possibly considerable decrease in $SO_4^{2-}$ in the fly ash slurry samples when glucose was added to stimulate the microbial activity. Geochemical data of this study is likely to be related to the activity of bacteria at the ash pond. The result may be used to understand about the characteristic of bacteria.

A Study on Release Characteristics of Lake Sediments under Oxic and Anoxic Conditions (호수 퇴적물의 호기 및 혐기조건에서의 용출 특성에 대한 연구)

  • In this study, we analyzed the release differences for some critical pollution compounds according to the surrounding conditions in order to predict water quality due to the sedimental releases and the release characteristics at different sedimental locations in Lake Leewon, in Tae-An area. COD, nitrogens and phosphates were analyzed using the standard methods for water quality, based on high chloride ion concentration(greater than 2,000 ppm). For COD, the release rate increased in the anoxic basin but almost the same in the oxic basin. For $NH_3$-N, the release rate decreased in the oxic basin as you go A through C point meanwhile, for $NO_3$-N and T-N, the tendency was reversed because of nitrification of them. In the anoxic basin, the release rates of $NH_3$-N and $NO_3$-N went up with A through C path. However, the release rate of T-N was found to decrease. Also, for $PO_4$-P and T-P, the release rates in the oxic basin were lowest at B point mainly because the phosphates were at less released in the highly $O_2$ concentrated environment. In the anoxic reactor, $PO_4$-P was released similarly regardless of the sampling points. In summary, the release rates in the oxic reactor were greater than those in the anoxic reactor for COD and $NO_3$-N. For the other components, the anoxic basin generated the higher release rates.
