  • From September 1, 2003 to November 30, 2004, 20 mineral water wells were selected for some area in east Europe and the study on their water quality was analized. It revealed that mineral water contained considerable quantity of magnesium ions which helps the smooth activities of vascular muscles, nervous systems and protects skins from allergic reactions. It also lowers cholesterol level and contains high concentration of calcium ions which is one of the vital components of teeth and bone like phosphorus. Thus it is concluded that it is not qualified as boiler feed water as it has overall high degree of hardness by the presence of four times content of $Mg^{2+}\;and\;Ca^{2+}$.

  • A three dimensional random walk particle tracking method is applied to the Saemangeum area in order to find stepwise environmental changes according to long term construction. Flow regime around Mangyeong, Dongjin and Geum river estuary changed greatly due to dike construction. It is distinctive that reduction of Byeonsan area's flow field and stagnant change in the northern part of the inner reservoir. Similar characteristics are found through the tidal excursion analysis. By analysis of the vertical mixing structures according to density stratification based on temperature and salinity variation, a salt wedge and very strong stratification arises in the inner part of the reservoir after final closure, while it has been well mixed or partially mixed estuary during construction. Shrinking of horizontal dispersion and vertical mixing capability may cause adverse effect on water quality not only inner part but also outer region of the Saemangeum reservoir.

  • Sewerage supply in rural community is the important for water quality protection of water system such as river, lake and wetland. And characteristic of small scale wastewater system that have wide range of inflow and concentration in sewage should be considered for stable operation of small scale wastewater treatment plant. In this research, characteristics of flow ratio (flow / designed flow), effect on treatment efficiency of small scale wastewater treatment plant and assessment of optimal flow ratio were conducted through analysis on operation result of 18 small scale wastewater treatment plant in Bong-hwa gun. As a result, flow ratio shows the higher value during summer. However pollutants concentration in sewage was shown the higher concentration during autumn and winter. Treatment of small scale wastewater treatment plant is increased when flow ratio increased, and nutrient treatment efficiency is more sensitive to change of flow ratio than organic compound and suspended solids. According to this research result, it need to be maintained flow ratio 0.8 over value for stable treatment efficiency of small scale wastewater treatment plant.

  • Recently, various development projects have occurred due to rapid industrialization and urbanization. Both industry and population grew rapidly which causes a corresponding rise in pollution. The accumulated pollutants are washed-off during rainy days, highly degrading the water quality of the receiving water body. This is because a lot of non point source (NPS) pollutants were accumulated on the surface during dry periods. This research focuses on the development of Eco-Bio Filter (EBF) system that treats NPS pollutants. It is constructed at Kongju National University campus. The EBF is a type of a structured infiltration system that falls under the category of Low Impact Development (LID) hydrologic design practices. The monitoring of rain events was performed. It includes the development of design, the lessons learned from the post-construction testing and the improvements in the renovation made. After a series of monitoring, the MOE will use the results to apply the design to other areas in the country.

  • In this study, we evaluated the temporal changes of water quality in the 90 reservoirs in Korea and the relationships between water quality and their environmental factors in the reservoirs for effective management of reservoirs. The majority of study reservoirs were categorized as the eutrophic state based on Carlson's trophic index. Among 90 reservoirs, more than 55.0% were nutrient-rich based on $TSI_{TP}$ in each month, where more than 50.0% were nutrient-rich based on $TSI_{Chl-a}$ from June to November. Seasonal Mann-Kendall test was used to analyze temporal variation of water quality in the selected 60 reservoirs using monthly data from 2004 to 2008. The results showed that 27 (45.0%) reservoirs showed the improvement of water quality based on TP and Chl-a concentrations, while 14 (23.3%) and 11 (18.3%) reservoirs displayed the degradation of water quality based on TP and Chl-a concentrations, respectively. Meanwhile, a self-organizing map classified the study reservoirs into five groups based on differences of hydrogeomorphology (altitude, catchment area, bank height, lake age, etc.). Physicochemical factors and land use/cover types showed clear differences among groups. Finally, hydrogeomorphology of reservoirs were related to water quality, indicating that the hydrogeomorphological characters strongly affect water quality of reservoirs.

  • Ultrasound technology can be applied in various fields including environmental, energy, and material engineering processes. In this study the effect of liquid height/volume on calorimetric energy and sonochemical oxidation was investigated as one of the basic steps for the design of water/wastereater treatment sonoreactors. The liquid height was increased from 0 to $4{\lambda}$ by $1/4{\lambda}$ and it was found that both calorimetric energy and sonochemical oxidation were significantly increased at relatively high liquid height/volume where the power density was relatively low. The sonochemiluminescence (SCL) images for the visualization of the activity of cavitation also showed that larger and more stable active zone was formed with high SCL intensity at high liquid height/volume. Therefore, it was revealed that sonoreactors for water/wasterwater treatment could be significantly effective in terms of removal efficiency and energy consumption.

  • Soil erosion by rainfall is important factor for basin management because it reduces reservoir capacity and breaks out the contamination of water caused by turbid water. Recently, soil erosion study with GIS is in progress but does not consider soil erosion source area. This study calculated soil erosion amount using GIS-based soil erosion model in Imha basin and examined soil erosion source area using SPOT 5 High-resolution satellite image and land cover map. As a result of analysis, dry field showed high-density soil erosion area and we could easily investigate source area using satellite image. Also we could examine the suitability of soil erosion area by applying field survey method in common areas such as dry field and orchard area those are difficult to confirm soil erosion source area using satellite image.

  • A turbidity current in a river and a lake occurs due to diverse nutrient loading including suspended sediment in sediment runoff, which affects water withdrawal and river environments. We developed one dimensional time-variant numerical model based on Python for the Nagdonggang mainstream. We examined the numerical stability and the applicability of the model by performing the simulation of quasi-steady flow in non-flooding for three cases, which are different according to the point and the amount of turbidity inflows in the Nagdonggang upstream and a tributary. The result was reasonable in the respect of the conservation of matter. The model will facilitate to simulate a large river if we can secure the data of turbidity variations in a target river reach or measured points in a field.
