  • The objective of this study was to investigate the sibling relationship, the attachment to parent and peer according to children's gender, birth order, and sibling gender composition. For this purpose, 697 male and female elementary students answered the questionnaire, who were selected because they had only one sibling. The date were analysed by t-test and partial correlation. The major finding of this study showed that children who had same sex of sibling perceived more positive way to their younger sibling then children who had different sex of sibling and that children who had female sibling perceived more positive way to sibling relationship, attachment to parent and their peers than children who had male sibling.

  • Extensively used case-control designs in medical studies can also be powerful and efficient for family association studies as long as an analysis method is developed for the evaluation of association between candidate genes and disease. Traditional Cochran-Armitage trend test is devised for independent subjects data, and to apply this trend test to the biologically related siblings one has to take into account the covariance among related family members in order to maintain the correct type I error rate. We propose a more powerful trend test by introducing weights that reflect the number of affected siblings in families for the evaluation of the association of genetic markers related to the disease. An application of our method to a sample family data, in addition to a small-scale simulation, is presented to compare the weighted and unweighted trend tests.

  • For complex diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, it is believed that model-free methods might work better because they do not require a precise knowledge of the mode of inheritance controlling the disease trait. This is done by estimating the sharing probabilities that a pair shares zero, one, or two alleles identical by descent(IBD) and has some specific branches of test procedure, i.e., the mean test, the proportion test, and the minmax test. Among them, the minmax test is known to be more robust than others regardless of genetic mode of inheritance in current use. In this study, we compared the power of the methods which are based on minmax test and considering weighting schemes for sib-pairs to analyze sibship data. In simulation result, we found that the method based on Suarez' was more powerful than any others without respect to marker allele frequency, genetic mode of inheritance, sibship size. Also, The power of both Suarez- and Hodge-based methods was higher when marker allele frequency and sibship size were higher, and this result was remarkable in dominant mode of inheritance especially.

  • The ordinary least squares regression method of Haseman and Elston(1972) is most widely used in genetic linkage studies for continuous traits of sib pairs. Kruglyak and Lander(1995) suggested a statistic which appears to be a nonparametric counterpart to the Haseman and Elston(1972)'s regression method, but in fact these two methods are quite different. In this paper the relationships between these two methods are described and will be compared by simulation studies. One of the characteristics of the sib-pair linkage study is that the explanatory variable has only three different values and thus dependent variable is heavily replicated in each value of the explanatory variable. We propose a weighted least squares regression method which is more appropriate to this situation and the efficiency of the weighted regression in genetic linkage study was explored with normal and non-normal simulated continuous traits data. Simulation studies demonstrated that the weighted regression is more powerful than other tests.

  • An extensively used approach for family based association test(FBAT) is compared with the sib transmission/disequilibrium test(S-TDT), and in particular the adjusted S-TDT, in which the covariance among related siblings is taken into consideration, can provide a more sensitive test statistic for association. A simulation study comparing the three test statistics demonstrates that the type I error rates of all three tests are larger than the prespecified significance level and the power of the FBAT is lower than those of the other two tests. More detailed studies are required in order to assess the influence of the assumed conditions in FBAT on the efficiency of the test.

  • This study explores experiences of male siblings without disability who are caring for their adult siblings with intellectual disability. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted based on phenomenological qualitative research methods, and documents such as newspaper articles and broadcasting documentaries covering the care of participants were also used as materials. Data collection took place from August to October, 2017, and four brothers without disability participated in this study. Findings are presented as five themes: a sibling with a disability-centered life, living with complex emotions including emotional ambivalence, cautious life at all times, life to receive consolation, and life trying to achieve balance and harmony. Based on the results, political and practical considerations for brothers without disability and their families who support their adult siblings with intellectual disability are discussed. Implications for social workers are suggested.

  • This study attempts to examine the factors influencing the Caregiving responsibility of sibling without disability on their adult siblings with intellectual disability. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey was conducted on siblings without disability who have adult siblings with intellectual disability aged 18 years old or more and also who use services provided by 8 welfare centers for persons with disabilities in Seoul. With 132 valid responses, multiple regression technique was adopted in exploring a model for characteristics of adult with intellectual disability, a model for characteristics of siblings without disability, a model for relationship factors, and a comprehensive model. The findings of the study showed that the degree of disability in the model for characteristics of adult siblings with intellectual disability and the intimacy of siblings and social support in the model of relationship factors were significant. The result of the comprehensive model revealed that the degree of disability, the gender of the siblings without disability, the intimacy of siblings, and social support were significant. Especially, the relationship factors including the intimacy of siblings and social support were found to be the most significant factors in order to explain the caregiving responsibility. The findings of the study suggest that sibling program needs to be developed and disseminated in order to increase the understanding and the trust between adult with intellectual disability and sibling without disability, that a help is critical for adult with intellectual disability to extend the social network in which sibling without disability receives support from sibling without disability, family, friends, and other acquaintances around, and that different approach is needed in order to reduce caregiveing difficulties depending on the dependence of disability.

  • This study employs photovoice research methodology to investigate adolescents' experiences in sibling relationships and to analyze the impact of sibling interactions on their development and growth. The participants comprised eight high school students with one sibling (four males and four females) residing in the Incheon region. The research process encompassed several stages: participant recruitment, orientation, photovoice activity (focus group interviews), data analysis, and conclusion derivation. During the photovoice activity, participants engaged in a narrative process of photographing, interpreting, and discussing their experiences. The narratives were categorized into four primary themes: structure and environment, emotional interactions, roles, and parental subsystems. The conclusions drawn from the study are as follows: First, the similarity formed in sibling relationships during adolescence contributes to psychological stability. Second, roles and expectations based on birth order can cause stress for adolescents, indicating the need for equitable role adjustments within the family. Third, conflict in sibling relationships is crucial for enhancing problem-solving and social relationship skills. Lastly, consistent parenting attitudes significantly affect the emotional well-being of siblings. This study emphasizes the significance of fostering a deeper understanding of human development and family relationships through an exploration of adolescent sibling dynamics within home economics education.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficiency and productivity of technological innovation activities of companies certified as innovative pharmaceutical companies by the government to diagnose their competitiveness and derive measures to strengthen them. This study collected pharmaceutical input (R&D expenditures and number of employees) and output (sale, operating profit and patent) data between 2017 and 2019 for 38 innovative pharmaceutical companies. This study analyzed them using the data envelopment analysis (DEA) method, Tobit model and the Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI). First, the DEA result of the innovative pharmaceutical companies show that between the value of the CCR model of the scale efficiency and the value of the BCC model to diagnose the internal operation efficiency is differences. Second, efficiency does not differ between corporate characteristics. Third, Tobit model shows that number of patents held have positive effects on efficiency. Forth, overall MPI is 0.89. This can be interpreted as the rate of TECI decreased 3%p and TCI has increased 4%p. The results of this study can be used as decision-making data for response strategies to improve efficiency by identifying the cause of inefficiency and presenting target values.
