The effects of adjective meaning on response to color: A test using Stroop task (형용사의 의미가 색 구별에 미치는 영향: 스트룹 과제를 통한 검증)

  • Stroop effect(Stroop, 1935) is a reliable paradigm which has been used in various psychological research. Although classic Stroop experiment used color and color name for experimental stimuli, subsequent research reported that a color(e.g. green) and an object(e.g. grass) which displays a typical color show similar effects depending on color-object congruency(Klein, 1964). Because past research that used Stroop effect to investigate semantic representation tested association between concrete object and color, they predominantly used concrete nouns and their corresponding color names as stimuli(e.g. Dalrymple-Alford, 1968, 1972; Klein, 1964). Recently, Sherman and Clore(2009) reported that response time to white or black words is affected by moral value of words (e.g., honesty, crime) even when the words do not have specific referents. Based on this result, we tested association between thermesthesia-related adjectives(e.g., 따스한, 냉정한) and color(warm color, cold color) using Stroop task. The results showed that subjects were faster in their response to color when adjective-color was congruent than when incongruent, and there was an interaction between color and meaning of adjectives. The Stroop effect in this research is unique because, contrary to previous research that used concrete nouns, the effect was obtained even with abstract adjectives which do not have specific referents. In addition, unlike Sherman and Clore(2009) that used achromatic color, our results show that Stroop effect obtains between abstract adjectives and chromatic color.

Development of Emotion Assessment Scale in Evaluation of Television Picture Quality (TV 화질에 대한 감성평가척도 개발)

  • The article reports findings on: (1) development of emotion assessment scale in evaluating the Television(TV) picture quality; and (2) how psychological and physical factors relate to TV picture quality. A total of 152 adjectives that specifically describe emotional reactions were first selected from a Korean dictionary of adjectives, followed by ratings on their suitability for the evaluation of TV picture quality. The final selection of 19 adjective, based on the reported rating scores greater than 4.1, were used on 126 college students who were asked to perform similarity ratings on the adjectives. Based on factor analyses (i.e., principal component analysis with oblique rotation) on the similarity of scores, the following adjectives were selectively chosen for the development of the new emotion assessment scale: 'neat-messy', 'refreshing-gloomy', 'clean-dirty', 'comfortable-tense', 'smooth-rough', 'bright-dark', 'gorgeous-plain', 'diverse-monotonous', 'satisfying', 'natural', and 'sensuous'. These adjectives composed into two distinct constructs, 'cleanness or smart' factor and 'gorgeousness' factor, which demonstrated sensitivity to changes in brightness, contrast, color, and tint in the TV picture quality, except for changes in sharpness.

A Study on Types and Characteristics of 'Cultural Landscapes' with Big Data Analysis: Focusing on the Case of Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do (빅데이터 분석을 통한 '문화경관' 유형과 특성 연구: 전라남도 신안군 사례를 중심으로)

  • The World Heritage Committee decided to make "cultural landscapes" a world heritage category in the 16th Session of the UNESCO General Conference. The decision was made from a recognition of the importance of interactions between human beings and the natural environment or between cultural heritage and natural heritage. Many countries have created policies and institutions to protect their own cultural landscapes along with the changing times. Korea, however, has not obviously defined the concepts and categories of its cultural landscapes, but manages policies and institutions based on the concept of a scenic spot, which has some similar meanings. In addition, it even borrows the "list of landscape adjectives," one of the representative methods for managing landscapes, from foreign countries. With this background, this paper suggested how to define cultural landscapes according to the global development flow. It created a list of cultural landscape adjectives by gathering the adjectives that can properly express local cultural landscapes in Korea. In particular, it collected 4,556 articles from a local newspaper by focusing on the case of Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, and analyzed key words and adjectives included in them by using big data analysis. The results suggested by this paper, such as the "classification table of cultural landscape types," "list of cultural landscape adjectives" and "network map of nouns/adjectives" can be applied to research on other localities, and furthermore, used as basic data for finding and protecting the characteristics of local cultural landscapes in Korea.

  • 한국어의 동사성 명사와 형용사성 명사는 경동사와 결합하여 문장의 서술어 역할을 하는데 이때에 명사는 보어 자질을 경동사에 전달하고 이렇게 결합한 후에 생성되는 서술어 복합체가 술어로 역할 한다. 이번 구문분석 시스템 연구에서는 LKB 시스템을 통해 한국어에서 체언과 결합하는 격조사의 처리와 용언과 결합하는 어미의 처리 및 동사/형용사성 명사가 경동사에 보어 자질을 전달하여 술어 복합체를 이루는 현상을 집중적으로 다룬다.

Emotion-based Image Retrieval Using Emotional Term Thesaurus (감성 형용사 시소러스를 이용한 감성 기반 이미지 검색)

  • 기존의 이미지 검색에서는 원하는 이미지를 검색하기 위하여 사용자가 이미지의 가시적 속성을 정확히 표현하도록 요구함으로써 질의가 제한되었다. 본 논문에서는 색상으로부터 유추될 수 있는 감성 형용사를 감성 용어 시소러스로 구축하여 감성 기반의 이미지 검색이 가능하도록 하였다. 감성 용어 시소러스를 이용함으로써 ‘부드러운’, ‘세련된’등과 같은 감성 용어를 검색의 질의어로 사용할 수 있게 되어 사용자의 검색 의도를 보다 정확하게 표현할 수 있게 되고, 검색의 결과에 대한 만족도를 향상 시킬 수 있다.

  • 본 연구는 소비자의 라이프스타일에 따라 견직물에 대한 감각·감성의 차이가 있는지를 분석하고, 라이프스타일별 촉감선호도와 구매선호도 차이를 규명함으로써 견직물의 소재 디자인시 감성관련정보를 제공하고자 한다. 라이프스타일에 따라 감각형용사는 ‘거칠다, 우글쭈글하다, 촘촘하다’등에서 보수파가 캐주얼파보다 높은 평가하였으며, 감성형용사는 ‘개성적이다, 독특하다’등에서는 보수파가 캐주얼파보다 높게 평가하였으며 ‘클래식하다’는 보수파가 캐주얼파보다 높게 평가하였다. 또한, ‘캐주얼하다, 액티브하다, 신선하다’는 보수파가 캐주얼파보다 높게 평가하였다. 세 clluster별로 촉감선호도와 구매선호도를 분석한 결과 cluster 2를 가장 ‘촉감이 좋다, 구매시 선호한다’라고 하였다. 촉감선호도는 라이프스타일에 따라 유의한 차이가 없었으나 구매선호도에서는 라이프스타일에 따라 유의한 차이가 있었다.

Emotional Term Thesaurus for the Design Characteristics of Games (게임성 정의를 위한 형용사 시소리스)

  • The development of human-friendly game technologies understanding and responding to human emotion is a very crucial element in designing games. Out of emotion derived from games, this study attempted to define characteristics of games as a meaning representing the degree of reaching the targeted emotion. When examining most of researches regarding emotion, it has been noted that they tried to extract the most representative emotion through the systematization of emotional vocabulary and evaluate it by the association with the design elements in question. However, this definition would be beneficial only to understanding the direction of game entity and it could not express the emotion of concrete and objective players. Therefore, this study attempted to analyze the sense correlation of adjectives so as for emotional expressions to be represented accurately corresponding to players' intention, by using adjective thesaurus for the systematic understanding of such game entity.

Interpolation of Color Image Scales (칼라 이미지 스케일의 보간)

  • Color image scale captures the knowledge of colorists and represents both adjectives and colors in the same adjective image scales in order to select color(s) corresponding to an adjective. Due to the difficulty of psychological experiment and statistical analysis, in general, only a limited number of colors are located in the color image scales. This can make color selection process hard especially to non-expert. In this paper, we propose an interpolation of color image scale based on the fuzzy K-nearest neighbor method, which provides continuous colors according to the coordinates of the image scales. The experimental results show that the interpolated image scales can be practically useful for color selection process.

  • 제품의 품질 및 가격 뿐만 아니라 물질적 풍요로움과 더불어 다변화 되어가는 생활 환경 속에서 소비자의 감성과 선호도를 파악하는 것은 제품 판매 전략의 중요한 성공요소가 되고 있다. 이를 위하여 제품의 기능적 측면 뿐만 아니라 개개인의 정서적 감정과 선호도가 반영된 제품의 설계나 디자인 또한 요구되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 소재 개발의 프로세스가 고객 중심으로 변화하는 것에 대응하여 사용자의 감성과 선호도를 중심으로 소재를 개발하는 방법의 하나로 협력적 필터링 개인화 기법을 응용하여 섬유 패션 디자인 추천 시스템을 제안한다. Textile 기반의 협력적 필터링 시스템에서 예측에 사용될 이웃의 수를 결정하기 위해서 Representative Attribute-Neighborhood를 사용한다. 이웃들간의 사용자 유사도 가중치는 피어슨 상관 계수(Pearson Correlation Coefficient)를 사용한다. 소재에 대한 사용자의 감성이나 선호도에 대한 Textile의 대표 감성 형용사를 추출함으로써 소재 개발을 위한 감성 형용사 데이터 베이스를 구축한다. 구축된 감성 형용사 데이터 베이스를 기반으로 성향이 비슷한 사용자에게 Textile을 추천한다. 사용자 선호도 예측과 Textile 기반의 협력적 필터링 기술을 이용한 섬유 패션 디자인 추천 에이전트를 구축하여 시스템의 논리적 타당성과 유효성을 검증하기 위해 실험적인 적용을 시도하고자 한다.

An Evaluation of Human Sensibility on Perceived Texture for Real Haptic Representation (사실적인 햅틱 표현을 위한 질감지각 감성 평가)

  • This paper describes an experiment on the evaluation of human sensibility by monitoring responses to changes In the frequency and amplitude of a tactile display system. Preliminary tasks were performed to obtain effective adjectives concerning texture perception. The number of collected adjectives was originally 33. This number of adjectives was reduced to 14 by a suitability survey that asked whether an adjective is suitable for expressing a texture feeling. Finally after performing a semantic similarity evaluation, the number of adjectives was further reduced to ten and these ten were used in the main experiment. In the main experiment, selected sandpaper types and 15 selected combinations of frequencies and amplitudes of a tactile display were utilized to quantitatively evaluate the ten adjectives using a bipolar seven-point scale. The data show that a relationship exists between the independent variables(frequency, amplitude, and grit site) and the dependent variable(perceived texture). That is, the change of frequency and amplitude is directly related to perceived roughness or essential elements of human tactile sensitivity found in the preliminary experiment.
