Objectives The purpose of this survey was to investigate the using experiences and attitudes of general public toward the East-West collaborative medical practices (EWCMP). Methods We selected objects in general public and structured questionnaires were administrated to both 295 offline participants and 795 online participants. The data was collected from 15 to 28 February 2016 and analyzed statistically by frequency, ${\chi}^2$ cross-over analysis with SPSS software. Results The total number of participants was 1,090 and 66.1% of them has heard but only 19.5% has ever used EWCMP. For participants who has used EWCMP, the decision to use it was made by themselves (53.2%), 44.0% of them was satisfied with EWCMP, 89.4% of them showed revisiting intention to EWCMP hospital, and 72.2% of them showed the intention to introduce EWCMP to others. And 52.3% of them were optimistic about the prospects of EWCMP, especially in the field of disease treatment (49.9%) and rehabilitation (20.6%). On the reasons for lack of development of EWCMP, 31.9% of them listed prejudices existing on both sides firstly (31.9%). Preferred type of EWCMP was to use both western and Korean medical treatment at the same weight (53.9%). To promote EWCMP, it is required to confirm the concept of collaborative medical practice to the medical professions and government authorities (29.5%). Conclusions Considering low proportion of utilization and positive attitude toward the EWCMP among general populations, it is need to introduce or advertise EWCMP to them.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine effectiveness and usefulness of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in communication between physician and visiting nurses who provide visiting nursing services under long-term care insurance. Methods: Structured questionnaires were used to measure usefulness and satisfaction of the system, both accessibility and convenience to visiting nurses (31 people) and users (182 people). Results: From the user perspective, accessibility and convenience in terms of service users were both satisfactory as shown by users' percentage. No statistically significant difference was found for satisfaction between before and after using the system. The usefulness of the system for visiting nurses was satisfactory for most the nurses. Also most nurses answered that the system is needed and is very useful. Most of the participants (both visiting nurse and service users) were satisfied with use of the ICT system. However, there was no statistically significant difference in satisfaction between the pre and post service because the service provision period was too short (three months). Conclusion: The consensus from both users and service providers is that an ICT based visiting nursing system needs to be introduced but a more user - friendly environment for system development will be needed.

To support clinical decision making and communication in the East-West cooperative treatment of mild cognitive impairment. Methods: Drafting was based on literature review from the MEDLINE, EMBASE, OASIS, and CNKI databases using search terms such as 'mild cognitive impairment', 'mild neurocognitive disorder', 'acupuncture', 'herbal medicine' and 'traditional Chinese medicine'. An amendment reflecting the goal of consultation and detailed treatment contents was made by reviewing the draft and holding discussion with the rehabilitation specialist of western medicine. The committee then agreed to adopt the manual through the process of review and feedback in addition to face-to-face discussions. Results: This manual contains the diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment, the goal of consultation, and the cooperative treatment contents of the East-West medicine for mild cognitive impairment. Conclusions: This manual provides significant information about the decision making process and contents of treatment in one medical institution for East-West cooperative treatment of mild cognitive impairment.
Objectives: This study was made by Chung Yeon Korean Medicine Hospital in order to perform appropriate East-West integrative medicine. The purpose of this manual is to support decision-making and communication in the implementation of the East-West cooperative treatment of vascular dementia. Methods: In order to carry out this study, it is based on search terms such as 'vascular dementia', 'acupuncture', 'herbal medicine', 'integrative medicine', 'chinese traditional medicine', and 'cognitive function' in databases such as MEDLINE, EMBASE, OASIS and CNKI We collected references. The drafting proceeded with the collaboration of two specialists of the Korean medicine, and the disagreement on the basis of the quotation was determined through a two person agreement. After, The draft was reviewed by a western medical doctor(rehabilitation specialist). Then, The opinions of the entire medical staff of the committee were reflected in the draft and finalized the agreement. Results: Through this study, manuals for diagnosis, treatment, and other considerations in the process of applying East-West integrative medicine to vascular dementia were derived. Conclusions: This study has significance in that it provides manual information about the decision structure, treatment contents, role distribution, etc. of East-West integrative medicine within the medical institution that conducts the vascular dementia consultation. In order for this study to function as a generalized medical guideline, it is necessary to improve the research methodology and carry out professional consensus procedures.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to analyze the aspects of the Korean medicine (KM) treatment among children with cerebral palsy (CP) according to the disease characteristics. Methods: In a prospective observational multicenter study for children with CP, we analyzed 78 baseline questionnaires of children having experience of KM treatments such as acupuncture and Korean herbal medicine and 43 follow-up data of children who have received KM during the one observation year. Results: Of all the 182 participants, 38 children were currently getting KM treatment and 40 children have discontinued KM treatment. Children with non-spastic CP and more health problems tended to use KM. The most frequent reason for quitting acupuncture therapy was 'suffering of children' and the highest reason of stopping herbal medicine was 'rejection of children'. Among the 133 participants finished one year follow-up, 43 children have received at least one KM treatment. The average number of acupuncture therapy was twice a week and the average monthly cost of acupuncture therapy and herbal medicine were 65,922 won and 476,003 won, respectively. Children under 32 month old have received significantly more acupuncture and children with non-spastic CP have taken significantly more herbal medicine. Conclusions: Further study will be required to confirm the effectiveness of KM and increase the utilization of KM among the children with CP. More efforts should be made to increase the convenience of acupuncture therapy and herbal medicine and to expand the insurance coverage of KM for children with CP.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to identify factors that affect the utilization of Korean medicine (KM) among children with cerebral palsy (CP) and explore a processing model of decision-making by their parents. Methods : We conducted an individual in-depth interview with 21 mothers of children with CP who were recruited during the observational study. A grounded theory of Strauss and Corbin was used for qualitative analysis. Thus, collected data were classified into open coding including 121 concepts, 27 sub-categories and 7 categories. Results : The central phenomenon of the process of using KM for children with CP is 'KM as an optional treatment not essential'. Therefore there are many obstacles to starting KM treatment and it is easily interrupted for various reasons, unlike general rehabilitation treatment. However, if the patient experiences the therapeutic effect, the parents want to continue KM treatment. They try to provide treatment as much as possible if they can afford it. The parents give priority to general rehabilitation treatment and value the information and experience provided by the caregivers in similar situation as well as expert opinions. Conclusions : To expand and generalize KM treatment for children with CP, efforts to change interventional conditions such as treatment effect, treatment cost, treatment compliance, and convenience of treatment based on the understanding of the strategy used by the parents in KM utilization.
Objectives : The aim of this article is to compare the effect of the korean medicine alone with korean-western combination treatment to herpes zoster. Methods : Domestic databases(OASIS, NDSL, RISS, KISS, KTKP, KMBASE, DBPIA, KoreaMed, National Assembly Library) were used to search case study papers related to herpes zoster and korean medicine treatment. We searched them using the term 'Herpes zoster' or 'Ramsey Hunt' combinated with 'Acupuntcure', 'Herbal medicine' or 'Korean medicine'. Results : A total of 36 studies were selected and analyzed. 25 studies treated with korean medicine and 11 studies treated with korean-western combination treatment which include any western medication. Of these 36 papers, there were a total of 24 cases in which a VAS test was undertaken. According to 36 published papers, no statistically significant difference in the periods of treatment with korean medicine alone from those of korean-western combination treatment was found. Also, no statistical difference in the VAS changes per period with korean medicine alone from those with korean-western combination treatment was found. Conclusions : According to the results, These findings suggest that korean medicine treatment can be effective for the herpes zoster the same as korean-western combination treatment.
Objectives : The aim of this study was to develop a clinical pathway (CP) model for the integrative treatment of non-invasive breast cancer, with western medicine and Korean traditional medicine. Methods : The checklist model was composed in four types according to the target patients: DCIS inpatients, DCIS outpatients, LCIS inpatients, LCIS outpatients. The vertical axis of the pathway consists of 11 categories of actions applied to the patient. The horizontal axis was in accordance with the flow of time, comprising three periods during inpatient care and seven periods during outpatient care. In addition, CP was also composed in flow chart form. The pathway model was developed through a literature review of clinical practice guidelines, conference publications, papers, books, and websites. Results : The integrative CP model for non-invasive breast cancer was developed. Conclusions : The goal of the CP suggested in this study was to improve non-invasive breast cancer patients' quality of life and to supplement conventional treatment, by alleviating the side effects. The model developed through this study could serve as the basis when developing CPs in a real-world integrative medical environment. This could lead to a reduction in cost and time for CP development, thus bringing about efficiency in the clinical setting.
Background: This study investigated the effects of Kinesio taping application on lower back pressure pain and balance ability among university students with chronic lower back pain. Methods: A total of thirty university students between 20 to 30 years of age with chronic lower back pain were divided randomly into two groups, the control and the experimental group. In the control group (n=15), placebo taping was applied to the lumbar region. In the experimental group (n=15), Kinesio taping was applied to the erector spine muscles of the lower back. The groups were assessed for lower back pressure pain and balance ability, before and after the taping application. Pain was measured by the pain pressure threshold (PPT), and balance was measured using the good balance system (GBS). Results: There were significant improvements in both the PPT and GBS of the Kinesio taping group compared to pre-treatment values (p<.05), while the placebo taping group showed no significant change (p>.05). In addition, the Kinesio taping group had a statistically significant difference in PPT and GBS compared to the placebo taping group (p<.05). Conclusion: The Kinesio taping application is more effective than the placebo taping application in the improvement of lower back pressure pain and balance ability among university students with chronic lower back pain.
Objective : To investigate syndrome identification, herbal prescriptions, acupuncture point and other treatment, this study systematically reviewed case studies on Korean medicine (KM) treatment for urticaria. Method : Literature searches were performed on four Korean database; OASIS, RISS, KTKP and NDSL. Studies published before December 2022 were categorized and analyzed according to the herbal prescriptions. Results : Thirty-three studies including 16 case series and 17 single case reports were included in our review and the total number of patients was 523. Ancient prescriptions (古方) were used in 7 studies and prescriptions of Sasang constitutions were used in 8 studies and 18 studies used prescriptions of posterity (後世方). Wind-Heat (風熱) and syndrome identifications associated with digestive function were used frequently. Nineteen studies used acupuncture combined with herbal medicine and mainly used acupoints were ST36 (足三里), LI4 (合谷), LI11 (曲池), LR3 (太衝), SP6 (三陰交), CV12 (中脘), SP10 (血海). External herbal medicine was used in only 3 studies. Conclusion : To increase the cure rate of KM, various prescriptions should be used according to the symptom and stage of urticaria. Diversification of herbal formulations and the development of new external medicines are also necessary to conduct additional clinical studies with a high level of evidence.
