  • These studies were conducted to monitor developmental competence of follicular oocytes collected from the carcass of the high meat quality in Korean native cattle using each individual protocol of IVM, IVF and IVC. The follicular oocytes that were collected from the ovaries of the cow yielded 1, $1^+\;and\;1^{++}$ meat quality were matured, fertilized and cultured using each individual protocol of IVM, IVF and IVC. As results, the number of follicular oocytes collected from individual fundamentally-registered cows yielded 1, $1^+\;and\;1^{++}$ meat grade were 28.9, 28.8 and 29.6 per head, respectively. The rates of blastocyst formation after IVM, IVF and IVC were 27.2, 28.7 and 32.9% in the cows yielded 1, $1^+\;and\;1^{++}$ meat quality, respectively. The rate of blastocyst formation was 8.4 per head. The number of follicular oocytes collected from pedigree registered cows yielded 1, $1^+\;and\;1^{++}$ meat quality were 25.8, 27.1 and 27.0 per head, respectively. The rates of blastocyst formation were 23.0, 33.7 and 42.6% in the meat quality of 1, $1^+\;and\;1^{++}$ after in vitro-manipulation, respectively (p<0.05). The rate of blastocyst formation was 8.5 per head. In conclusion, these results suggest that in vitro embryo production system using individual culture system including IVM, IVF and IVC can make good use of the gene from the carcass of the high meat quality in Korean native cattle.

  • A total number of 20 cat samples including 8 parentage testing and 12 individual identification were genotyped. Genomic DNA was extracted from buccal swab, and genotyped by using 10 microsatellite markers (FCA005, FCA26, FCA224, FCA240, FCA453, FCA293, FCA075, FCA105, FCA229, and FCA651). This method consisted of single PCR procedure and showed reasonable amplification of all PCR products. Genotypes were determined by genetic analyzer. The number of alleles per locus of cats varied from 3 to 8 with a mean value of 5.5. Expected heterozygosity was ranged from 0.390 to 0.827 (mean 0.639) and the total exclusion probability of 10 microsatellite loci was 0.9441. Of the 10 markers, FCA240 marker has relatively high PIC value (>0.7). Of the 8 cats, 7 cats were qualified by compatibility according to the Mendelism. These results can give basic information for developing parentage verification and individual identification system in cat.

  • This study utilized 32,312 records of 17 linear type and 10 conformation traits(including final scores) of Hanwoo cows in the KAIA(Korea Animal Improvement Association) ('09~'10), with 60,556 animals in the pedigree file. Traits included stature, body length, strength, body depth, angularity, shank thickness, rump angle, rump length, pin bone width, thigh thickness, udder volume, teat length, teat placement, foot angle, hock angle, rear leg back view, body balance, breed characteristic, head development, forequarter quality, back line, rump, thigh development, udder development, leg line, and final score. Genetic and residual(co) variances were estimated using bi-trait pairwise analyses with EM-REML algorithm. Herd-year-classifier, year at classification, and calving stage were considered as fixed effects with classification months as a covariate. The heritability estimates ranged from 0.03(teat placement) to 0.42(body length). Rump length had the highest positive genetic correlation with pin bone width(0.96). Moreover, stature, body length, strength, and body depth had the highest positive genetic correlations with rump length, pin bone width, and thigh thickness(0.81-0.94). Stature, body length, strength, body depth, rump length, pin bone width, and thigh thickness traits also had high positive genetic correlations.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the effects of environmental factors on certain reproductive traits in Korean cattle on the basis of data from Korean Cattle Improvement Areas which were surveyed from 1986 to 1995. Results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. Least square means of the reproductive traits estimated were 466.11${\pm}$5.72 days for age at 1st service, 480.10${\pm}$6.15 days for age at 1st conception, 742.79${\pm}$7.48 days for age at 1st calving, 64.97${\pm}$1.42 days for days at 1st service postpartum, 72.06${\pm}$1.73 days for days open, 355.93${\pm}$1.92days for calving interval, 285.38${\pm}$0.42 days for gestation length and 1.21${\pm}$0.02 days for number of services for conception, respectively. 2. The ranges of the least squares means for the districts were 447.62${\pm}$5.94-490.72${\pm}$5.94 days for age at 1st service, 464.27${\pm}$6.38-505.20${\pm}$6.39 days for age at 1st conception, 721.91${\pm}$7.85-772.75${\pm}$7.80 days for age at 1st calving, 62.27${\pm}$1.55-68.97${\pm}$1.74days for days at 1st service postpartum, 69.74${\pm}$1.97-74.36${\pm}$2.27days for days open, 352.71${\pm}$2.18-359.64${\pm}$2.09 days for calving interval, 284.52${\pm}$0.42-286.04${\pm}$0.47days for gestation length and 1.11${\pm}$0.02-1.30${\pm}$0.02 days for number of services for conception, respectively. 3. Age at 1st service was latest in the cows with Basic Register and tended to be earlier for the more advanced registers. The number of services per conception tended to increase for the more advanced registers. 4. Days at 1st service postpartum was longest in the 2nd parity and tended to be shorter with the advancement of parity. The number of services per conception tended to decrease with the advancement of parity. 5. As the calving year advances from 1987 to 1995, days at 1st service postpartum, days open and calving interval tended to be longer, and number of service per conception tended to increase. 6. Days at 1st service postpartum, days open and calving interval were shorter in the cows that calved in spring and summer than in the cows that calved in fall and winter. The number of services per conception was larger in the cows that cocalved in fall and winter than the cows that calved in spring and summer.

  • This study was carried out to estimate genetic parameters and breeding values of Hanwoo cows for carcass traits. Carcass records were collected from Korean steers raised at the private farms located in rural area of Gangwon-do and slaughtered from December 2004 to June 2008 at the three slaughter houses near fattening farm. The results obtained in this study were summarized as follows; The means and standard deviations of the carcass traits were $5.57{\pm}2.01$ for marbling score (MS), $10.87{\pm}4.06mm$ for backfat thickness (BFT), $87.87{\pm}9.07cm^2$ for eye muscle area (EMA), $426.75{\pm}49.27kg$ for carcass weight (CW), and $65.80{\pm}3.80$ for yield index (YI). Heritability estimates using single trait analyses were 0.36 for MS, 0.35 for BFT, 0.24 for EMA, 0.29 for CW, and 0.40 for YI, respectively. Genetic correlation coefficients of MS with BFT, EMA, CW, and YI were -0.21, 0.30, -0.21 and 0.30, and those of BFT with EMA, CW and YI were -0.12, 0.57 and -0.97, and those of EMA with CW and YI were 0.32 and 0.27, respectively. And genetic correlation of CW with YI was -0.62. Single trait selection for MS might lead to reducing BFT, but might be an obstacle to increase CW due to negative genetic correlations of MS with BFT and CW.
