This study was experienced in order to obtain the shear bond strength of orthodontic bracket adhesives under the blood contamination that can be occurred during the procedure of bracket bonding under window opening surgery. As a result of this study, shear bond strength of all glass ionomer groups were lower than resin cement groups. However, the strength of uncontaminated and post-contaminated group of glass ionomer was strong enough to perform an orthodontic forced eruption. This study revealed that during a window opening surgery, glass ionomer without etching procedure is available in order to bond a bracket if surface of teeth is not pre-contaminated by blood before the adhesive application. Both simple procedure and less adhesives remnant after bonding failure could make light-cured glass ionomer cement the ultimate choice for racket bonding.

Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the contamination rates of blood culture in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and to examine the clinical characteristics related to the contamination. Methods: Eight hundred thirty cases of blood culture performed from March 2013 to February 2014 were analyzed. We evaluated the contamination rates of blood culture by blood sampling sites and compared the clinical characteristics such as real name system and body weights of the contaminated cases and those of non-contaminated ones. The clinical characteristics were retrospectively reviewed by medical records. Results: The overall contamination rate was 3.6% (30/830). The contamination rates by blood sampling sites were as follows: peripheral vein 15.6% (10/64), peripheral artery 2.6% (20/759), and umbilical arterial catheter 0% (0/7). There was no difference in the contamination rates between cases with and without real name system (P=0.484). However, there were significant differences in the contamination rates by the physicians who performed the culture (P=0.038) and body weight (<1,000 g vs. ${\geq}1,000g$) at the time of blood culture (P<0.001). Conclusions: These results suggest that neonates with a body weight less than 1,000 g have more risks of the contamination of blood culture. Furthermore, there is a necessity to provide blood culture performers with active feedbacks and individualized education plans that can help diminish blood culture contamination rates. Prospective studies in a systematic manner that can be applied in actual clinical settings are needed in order to figure out factors that can diminish the contamination rates of blood culture in NICU.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of blood contamination on the push-out bond strength and surface morphology of tricalcium silicate materials; Biodentine$^{(R)}$, Theracal$^{(R)}$ and mineral trioxide aggregate. The standardized lumens of root slices prepared from extracted single-root human teeth were filled with Biodentine$^{(R)}$, Theracal$^{(R)}$ and mineral trioxide aggregate by manufacturer's instruction. The specimens were randomly divided into 2 groups (n = 20) for each material and then incubated for 4 days at $37^{\circ}C$; control group (phosphate buffered saline solution) and experimental group (fetal bovine serum). The push-out bond strengths were then measured by a universal testing machine and the surface morphology of each experimental group was analyzed by scanning electron microscope. Biodentine$^{(R)}$ and Theracal$^{(R)}$ showed higher push-out bond strength compared with mineral trioxide aggregate after exposure to fetal bovine serum. A substantial change in the surface morphology of each material was observed after exposure to fetal bovine serum. In conclusion, the push-out bond strengths of Biodentine$^{(R)}$ and Theracal$^{(R)}$ were higher than mineral trioxide aggregate when exposed to blood contamination. Therefore, it is supposed that the use of Biodentine$^{(R)}$ and Theracal$^{(R)}$ is appropriate in the presence of blood.

The purpose of this study was to determine and compare the shear bond strength of two self-etching primer systems to primary teeth contaminated with saliva and blood. Clearfil SE Bond and AQ Bond were evaluated. One hundred specimens were made by seventy-five deciduous teeth(fifty anterior and twenty-five posterior teeth) and divided randomly into ten groups. Small flat dentinal surfaces were prepared by grinding the buccal, lingual and labial areas. Specific surface treatments were applied to each group: (1) a self-etching primer application(control group), (2) saliva contamination followed by primer(Group I), (3) primer curing followed by saliva contamination (Group II), (4) blood contamination followed by primer(Group III), (5) primer curing followed by blood contamination(Group IV). After bonding of composite resin(Z100, 3M, USA) to contaminated sample surfaces and thermocycling(1,000 cycles), shear bond strengths were measured using Universal Testing Machine(Zwick Z020, Zwick Co., Germany). The results were as follows; 1. Group I showed lower shear bond strength than control group but no statistically significant difference was found(P>0.05). 2. Group II and blood contamination group(Group III & IV) showed significantly lower shear bond strength than control group(P<0.01). 3. The shear bond strength of Clearfil SE Bond was significantly higher than that of AQ Bond(P<0.05).

The objective of this study was to compare the shear bonding strength of zirconia after cleaning the crown contaminated by saliva or blood and determine the effect of thermocycling. 180 specimens were embedded in acrylic resin. 20 Specimens in the positive control group were bonded with resin cement without contamination. 20 Specimens in the negative control group were washed with water for 20 seconds and then dried for 10 seconds. 120 Specimens contaminated by saliva or blood were cleaned by using three cleaning methods: 37% phosphoric acid gel, commercial cleanse, and 2.5% NaOCl. All samples were bonded with resin cement and divided into two subgroups: One was not aged, and the other was tested with 30,000 thermocycling. In both groups contamination by saliva and blood, no statistically significant difference was not found in control, groups cleansed by commercial cleanser and 2.5% NaOCl. When the groups cleansed with water and 37% phosphate gel were compared with the control, significantly low shear bond strength was shown. Thermocycling group showed statistically significantly low shear bond stress compared to the groups without thermocycling. When zirconia was contaminated by saliva or blood, its original shear bond strength could be obtained if it was cleaned with commercial cleanser or 2.5% NaOCl.

Blood decontamination is an important factor in success of the orthodontic bracket. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the shear bond strength affected by blood decontamination. The shear bond strength was measured on blood decontamination before and after primer photopolymerization. And the adhesive remnants type and surface patterns was evaluated under scanning electron microscopy. A total of 50 human premolars were prepared. Group I was attached using conventional resin-acid etching method as control group. Group II and III were blood contaminated before curing primer and groups IV and V were blood contaminated after curing primer. Group II and IV were treated only with cotton pellet and Groups III and V were treated with cotton pellet after water washing. The mean shear bond strengths were in the order of groups I, V, III, II, and IV. In scanning electron micrographs group III and V showed more uniform surface than group II and IV. The ARI was significantly different between the control group and the experimental groups (p <0.05).
