A series of field tests were performed to suggest a rational method for the stability evaluation of soft clay. The behavior of settlement-displacement obtained by field monitoring system was used to compare and analyze with various stability evaluation methods, and to investigate the applicability of the methods for stability evaluation of soft clay. The limit equilibrium method, numerical analysis and field monitoring methods were used to analyze the stability evaluation. The horizontal displacement was abruptly increased when physicla properties of soft clay reached its maximum values and therefore, the values of these properties could be used to the fundamental data for stability evaluation. The evaluation of the stability of clay embankment was suggested to use inclination of ccrve rather than critical line, and the minimum satey factor of 1.2 or larger for natural clay was recommeded . Therefore, the evaluation of short term stability of soft clay could be effectively peformed with the hypefrbolic model and the field monitored data.

The field experiments and analyses were performed to apply Post-Tensioned Prestressed Concrete Pavement(PTCP) at the Weigh-in-Motion(WIM) sensor installed sections. The experimental results showed that PTCP could be acceptable for WIM sections because the displacements were negligibly smaller at the cutting location for sensor installation.
Behaviour of soil nailed walls in Korea has been analysed based on a number of field measurements. The investigation has included interface shear strength development at the nail-soil interface from pull-out tests, lateral ground displacements, tensile force distributions along soil nails and mobilised interface shear stress distributions. Insights into the soil nailed wall behaviour based on the shear transfer mechanism at the soil-nail interface and partial mobilisations of the interface shear strength, governed by relative shear displacement, are reported and discussed. It is expected that results from the current research can provide relevant parameters required for preliminary design of soil nailed walls in Korea.

Maturity method is a non-destructive method for estimating in-place concrete strength as a function of time and temperature. The main objective is to use maturity method determining joint sawing and traffic opening time for whitetopping construction in Korea. Another objective is to investigate the influence of air temperature in the correspondence to slab temperature and maturity value. For determining the joint sawing and traffic opening time, thermachron i-button and strain gage were inserted in the fresh concrete in the slab and a maturity value was calculated at desired times. In-place strength was then estimated from a pre-established relationship between maturity values and compressive strength. The results showed that there are significant differences between the estimated strength obtained from maturity curve and in-place concrete strength. The reasons are that the gain of in-place concrete strength was influenced by several factors in the field such as curing conditions, air temperature, and wind speed etc. Also, the results showed that air temperature had significant influence on slab temperature and maturity value The slopes of maturity curves exponentially decrease as air temperature decreases. This means that maturity value sharply dropped as air temperature decreases.
An experimental study that included detailed observation of four 305-mm-diameter drilled shafts, one reference shaft of standard design and three test shafts with isolation tubes to mitigate skin friction in the vadose zone of a clay soil profile, is described. The shafts were loaded only by naturally expanding and contraction soil over a period of 17 months. The soil at the test site was instrumented to track suction and elevation changes. Maximum ground surface movements exceeding 40 mm were observed. Heave movements of less than 1.5 mm were observed in the test shafts with isolation tubes, while movements of 5 mm were observed in the reference shaft. Unit side shear loads in the shafts protected by the isolation tubes were minimal compared to those measured in the reference shaft. This indicates that the isolation tubes were very effective.
An experimental study, which included four 305mm-diameter test shafts, one reference shaft with standard design and three test shafts with isolation tubes, is described. The soil was also soil heave and shrinkage that occur during suction changes at the field site. The test shafts were monitored for a period of about 18 months. Maximum ground movements exceeding 35mm were observed. Movements of only 1 to 2mm were observed in the test shafts with isolation tubes, while movements of 4 to 5mm were observed in the reference shaft. A simple computing model was developed to predict, based on suction changes, the maximum amount of ground heave. Relationship among suction. total stress, and volumetric strain was abtained in the laborstory. This relationship, used as inputs to the predictive model, enabled the computation of the maximum ground heave.
Deformation of a slope at a coal waste depot and the natural slope under the depot was surveyed and investigated at Dogye village in Samcheock city, Gangwon Province. To investigate the behaviors of the slopes, wire sensors and a rain gauge were installed on the crest of the waste depot slope and inclinometers were installed in the natural slope. The results of deformation monitoring at the crest of the waste depot slope using wire sensors revealed increased deformation with increasing cumulative rainfall. The results of monitoring horizontal deformation of the natural slope revealed that maximum horizontal deformation was also affected by cumulative precipitation. However, the groundwater level at the natural slope showed no change with rainfall. These measurements confirm that deformation at coal mine waste depots is closely related to precipitation, indicating that self-loading at such depots increases with rainfall infiltration, thus causing deformation of the waste depot slope. In addition, increasing the self-load of the coal mine waste depot may cause deformation of the underlying natural slope.
Since the first construction of soil nailing in France in 1972, the application of soil nailing has increased. However, there is currently no design method which is universally accepted or agreed upon far soil nailed wall, because each of the design methods has different assumptions and, therefore, different approaches, moreover, since the suggested optimal inclination angles of nails are different by researchers. Therefore, the effect of nail inclination with soil nailing is analyzed by FEM. In this study, Finite element program SOILSTRUCT was applied for the effect analysis of nail inclination in soil nailed wall. For this finite element analysis, CEBTP No. 1 project data were used. The analyzed nail inclination ranged from 0$^{\circ}$ to 30$^{\circ}$ with 5$^{\circ}$ intervals. The result of finite element analysis showed that the most optimal inclination was 20$^{\circ}$ Also, the tension farce in the nails increased as the nail inclination increased. However, the effect of nail inclination on the wall deformation was very little. Therefore, constructability seems to be more important than nail inclination. Also, the tension force in the nails increases as the nail depth below the top of the wall increases, except f3r the lowest nail. Therefore, appropriate nail diameter should be used to prevent breakage of nails with considering nail strength-deformation interaction.
Field monitoring data for embankments in thirteen road construction sites at coastal area of the Korean Peninsula were analyzed to investigate the characteristics of lateral flow in soft grounds, to which vertical drain methods were applied. First of all, the effect of the embankment scale on the lateral flow was investigated. Thicker soft soils and lager relative embankment scale produced more horizontal displacements in soft grounds. Especially, if thick soft grounds were placed, the relative embankment scale, which was given by the ratio of thickness of soft ground to the bottom width of embankments, became larger and in turn large horizontal displacement was produced. And also higher filling velocity of embankments induced more horizontal displacements in soft grounds. The other major factors affecting the lateral flow in soft ground were the thickness and undrained shear strength of soft grounds, the soil modulus and the stability number. Maximum horizontal displacement was induced by less undrained shear strength and soil modulus of soft grounds. Also more stability numbers produced more maximum horizontal displacements. When the shear deformation does not develop, the stability number was less than 3.0 and the safety factor of bearing was more than 1.7. However, if the stability number was more than 5.14 and the safety factor of bearing was less than 1.0, the unstable shear failure developed in soft ground. 50mm can be recommended as a criterion of the allowable maximum horizontal displacement to prevent the shear deformation in soft ground, while 100mm can be recommended as a criterion of the allowable maximum horizontal displacement to prevent the shear failure in soft ground.
