  • Because the exhibition space in the virtual reality is another kind of reality, which exits in another level, it enables us free from time and physical space, so using the virtual reality will be an effective practice for overcoming cultural divide and managing museums. Especially, virtual reality could transform a fixed physical space into portable contents, so this characteristic would be useful and meaningful when applying the outreach program, which claimed to stand for 'museum out of museum' as following. First, it will give more opportunities of experiencing museums to many people because of freedom of physical space, one of the advantages virtual reality has. Second, people will experience and understand the contents under the context, rather than simply exposing information of artifacts one by one. Third, even people who are far from a museum can experience identical contents at the same time, so this synchronicity will enhance communications among people and the society. Fourth, it will provide rich contents to people by putting a variety of exhibitions into one VR device. Fifth, it will be useful for archiving the exhibition with minimizing the loss of contents. Sixth, VR will convert museum visitors from observers to operators. Finally, VR can expand the target audience of the outreach program and develop a variety of education programs. Because museums is a public organization for overcoming cultural divide and enhancing communication, they should adopt virtual reality, which enables to extend the exhibition space and provide more opportunities of experiencing museums.

  • This study investigated differences in presence, immersion, and situational interest in small group learning using augmented reality, based on the degree of tool sharing. 84 eighth-grade students participated in small groups of four. Each group was randomly assigned to one of three environments based on marker and device sharing: the shared environment (shared marker and device usage), the mixed environment (shared marker and individual device usage), and the individual environment (individual marker and device usage). Small group learning using augmented reality was conducted for three class periods, focusing on the "Characteristics of Matter" unit. One-way ANOVA results for the dependent variables revealed that, compared to the shared environment, presence and situational interest were significantly higher in the mixed environment, while immersion and situational interest were significantly higher in the individual environment. MANOVA results for the sub-components of each dependent variable showed significant differences in realness for presence, antecedents and experiences for immersion, and instant enjoyment, novelty, and total interest for situational interest. Analysis of interviews and classroom observations indicated that students in shared and individual environments tended to use their devices individually when utilizing augmented reality. However, in mixed environments, students showed a tendency to use their devices collaboratively, leading to more active interactions. Based on these findings, environments for using tools to enhance the effectiveness of small group learning using augmented reality are discussed.

  • The research investigated the interaction effect of video resolution and device luminance on the perceived characteristics, presence, and fatigue viewing virtual reality. Experiments were composed of mixed design, and the resolution and luminance were classified into three types, HD, 2K, and 4K, and 20, 60, and 100, respectively. Participants watched video of 6-minutes randomly, and responded to the questionnaire after watching each video. The results showed that no interaction effect existed. Meanwhile, there are statistically significant differences on the luminance of depth perception, the resolution of visual intervention, and the resolution of adjustment fatigue. Also, higher resolution and luminance showed higher cognitive function, presence and fatigue.

  • This paper addresses questions on the marginalized position of youths of 'Gangbuk' and elucidates how they construct their own identities in the individual trajectories of everyday life. Three years of research, including participatory observation and in-depth interviews, was conducted on nine students from Northeastern district of Seoul. The research also adopted reflexive photography interview method in order to encourage the informants to actively participate in the research. The result illustrates the diversity of the everyday life experiences. More 'marginalized' youths from middle to lower class background had to endure the burdens of their daily lives without programs. Still, they were elaborating their own cultural taste and positive self-narratives at the periphery of the mainstream culture, by practicing music, online community activities and bodily performances. They had to negotiate the crucial turn of life after their graduation, when they entered into the harsh social competition with limited resources. We observed how they gradually assimilate the identity of the 'working youth', some of them developing a positive valorization of their experiences labor. Findings underline the active role of the cultural practices in the making of class identity of the youth and the necessity of researches situating the making of class identity and the reproduction of the class for the youth in the larger geography of class culture in the contemporary Korean society. Lastly, it is argued that these youths should not be considered as determined subjects, who reproduce already established class identities, but as active agents of their lives who deserve more respects and attentions from the society.

  • The purpose of this essay is to explore the methodological standpoint and the meaning of 'Discourse Analysis' in policy science. I discussed it in three dimensions including: 1) the ontological point of view, 2) the epistemological perspective, and 3) researcher's position in policy research. 1) From the ontological standpoint, I explained the policy as a text, context, discourse, and ideology, that is focused on being constructed by the formative power of language. 2) The ontological standpoint produced "the argumentative turn" in the policy analysis, and many policy analysts emphasize the argumentative process of policy making and evaluation. This argumentation process includes the interpretative and critical viewpoints as well as the normative and ethical characteristics of policies in the discourse analysis. We should reexamine reality critically because discourse is ultimately influenced by the prevailing cultural and social norms. Therefore, an interpretative and critical viewpoint is an epistemological perspective in the discourse analysis. This critical approach creates an awareness of the limitations on our thinking under the particular major discourse, and requires the self-reflection within and beyond the discourse. This process leads to the human emancipation. 3) In order to achieve this emancipation, the last approach suggests that we need to scrutinize "the subject" as a researcher, who is also influenced and subjectified by the major discourse and, thus must deconstruct his or herself. Last but not least, we should emphasize the researcher's role as a listener of the minor voice(discourse) and even the silence of the clients.

  • A number of small and medium design companies in Korea are making efforts to develop distinguished products with an aim to survive and prosper. However, it is quite difficult to succeed due to insufficient experience in product planning and the challenges in applying known methodologies, which are based on a large amount of data presented as best practices in designing process, in the actual small and medium enterprise operations. To this end, this study suggested the usefulness of the user participation process as the methodology for small and medium design companies and chose the user FGD method implemented by Company P which is a small design company as an empirical case study. The following are the processes used in the case study; First, the problems of existing baby bath were derived through user FGD. Second, opinions were collected from various classes of users through in-depth interviews. Third, the ideas derived were analyzed with the KJ method and grouped based on similar elements, through which six design directions and detailed design concepts covering size, material, safety, purchase factors of existing product, direction of improvement, additional elements were derived. Through the case study, this study verified that the FGD method of Company P could improve the practical verification, integration and promptness of the product planning process in small and medium enterprises. This is valuable as a realistic process that small and medium enterprises with limited capital and manpower may adopt.
