It is expected that wireless LANs will substitute wired LANs and will be tightly coupled with mobile cellular systems. In this integrated network environment, vertical handoff between wireless LANs and mobile cellular systems is needed. In this paper, we propose handoff procedures and requirements for implementing of the vertical handoff. The proposed vertical handoff procedures are likely to be use as a basic example lot implementing of the vertical handoff.
Handoff is one of the most important factors that ma? degrade the performance of TCP connections in wireless data networks. In this paper, we present a lossless and duplication free handoff scheme called LPM (Last Packet Marking) for improving Cellular If semisoft handoff. LPM signals the safe handoff cue by sending a specially marked packet to mobile hosts. SPM (Semisoft rePly Message) is the only newly introduced control packet. Our performance study shows that LPM achieves lossless packet delivery without duplication and increases TCP throughput significantly.

Future mobile communication networks, which consist of ATM-based B-ISDN backbone networks and wireless ATM networks, will provide u user with broadband connection and QoS service. These network systems need the lossless handoff methods which support user mobility, satisfy ATM features such as ATM cell ordering and no ATM cell duplication and minimize buffer requirement for ATM cell buffering. In this paper we suggest a multicast-based handoff method to supp$\alpha$t lossless connection as well as to minimize buffer overhead. It establishes a dynamic multicast connection between source terminal and wireless member AP (access point)s. When the mobile terminal receives data packet correctly, it notifies the positive acknowledgement of the packet to all member APs. And member APs then release the MT related temporary buffer space for MT's future movement. Therefore member APs can eliminate unnecessary buffer usage and manage the buffer space efficiently. Analysis result shows that our handoff method has better performance in buffer requirement for lossless and seamless connection services over VCT (virtual connection tree) method and other dynamic multicast-based handoff methods.
Dynamic Handoff Control Scheme (DHCS), which is propose d in this paper, suggests the method to request handoff at the optimal time. To accomplish this, DHCS measures the speed of the mobile station and sets the pilot strength for handoff request. When the pilot strength of the current base station is bigg or than the pilot strength for handoff request, which means the pilot strength of the current base station is big enough so the possibility of the call to be disconnected is low, DHCS doesn't request for the handoff even though the pilot strength of the adjacent base station is bigger than the pilot strength of the curent base station. DHCS guarantees the QoS (Quality of Service) by processing the handoff calls prior to new calls at the base station and providing continuous service for the mobile station by setting the priorities for the calls according to the queue waiting time transmitted from the mobile stations.

Proposed CCRSVP (Candidate Casting RSVP) algorithm is a new fast handoff method which uses advanced multicasting method and RSVP for IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN (WLAN) environments. The proposed algorithm shows good performance in the handoff latency and the B/W efficiency aspect and guarantees QoS because it uses L2 information (BSSID) of WLAN and starts to reserve resources and multicast packets before L2 handoff completes. We also propose a Markov chain performance analysis model in which we can analyze the handoff performance of various handoff algorithms. Using the model, we compare bandwidth efficiency of the proposed algorithm with existing handoff algorithms which use RSVP by analyzing blocking probability of session, resource usage, and the average number of ongoing session in a cell. The results show that the proposed algorithm shows better performance than the existing algorithms in the above three performance aspects.

A handoff call require more high QoS than that of a new call to satisfy continuity of communication on cellular networks. In case of a handoff call, after start connection of communication, the handoff call moves among cells. Therefore, Blocking of handoff call provides more bad service to respect to user. In this paper, we propose a 3 states guard channel schem to provide a stable environment of communication for a handoff call. The proposed scheme assigns the number of usable channels discriminatorily by distinguishing between of a new call and a handoff call. This scheme can reduce a handoff call blocking probability and improvement QoS of cellular networks. In this scheme, a handoff call classify by a partial handoff call and a full handoff call according to their handoff probability otherwise known as a previous guard scheme.
