The Impact of Abolition of the Shipping Conference on the Liner Shipping Market (해운동맹의 폐지가 정기선 시장에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구)

  • The organization of the shipping conference -an international cartel, was approved by countries that recognized it for stabilizing routes as well as preventing excessive competition among liner shipping companies and recognized the characteristic of the liner service that is regularly repeated in the international liner shipping market. However, due to competition in bulk transportation and development of multimodal transport through new entrants, power expansion and vessel enlargement of non-aligned shipping companies; the shipping conference started collapsing, and was eventually abolished. As the shipping conference played an important role in the liner shipping market, there were changes in the competition structure of the liner shipping market, and this accordingly drove research on the effects of the abolition of the shipping conference on the liner shipping market. The effects of abolition of the shipping conference on the liner shipping market was analyzed after surveying the factors related to abolition of the shipping conference, and through the use of correlation and multiple regression analyses. Subsequent to the abolition of the shipping conference, the liner shipping companies increased global containership bottoms. Consequently, this led to fierce competition of freight charges. As a result, profitability of shipping companies diminished. However, shipping companies with a dominating cost structure recorded profits, while shipping companies with an inferior cost structure started recording a loss.

  • To study the business performance, this research reviewed the revenue of 2012 for shipping and logistics companies in Korea, then selected 10 shipping companies and 10 logistics companies according to annual sales amount. These 20 companies are divided into four groups considering their business structure and their financial performance are organized from 2005 to 2012. Then CCR, BCC model has been applied to static efficiency and dynamic changes in productivity for analysis. As an overall result, logistics companies are proven to be better than shipping company in efficiency, change of productivity, growth and profitability. Among the logistics companies, the performance of second party logistics companies are relatively better in those factor above than the third party logistics companies.

  • This research studies the shipping industry rationalization of 1984 and the 2009 shipping industry restructuring and policy to raise competitiveness. According to this research the operation of the two policies showed significant difference in the enforcer, aim and policy contents. In 1984, under government initiative, M&A of shipping companies was accomplished but in 2009 restructuring of shipping companies is being pushed ahead by the group of creditors. The use of different policies, M&A of shipping companies and restructuring of insolvent shipping companies, as solutions in a crisis shows different characteristics. The act of shipping industry rationalization in 1984 was proposed on the very basic and aggressive aim and targeted to improve Korea's shipping industry structure. On the other hand, the 2009 policy of the restructuring of the shipping companies and improving competitiveness was based on the protective concept. This policy aimed for a prevention of bankruptcy of the shipping companies and hence preserve the shipping industry.

  • 세계경제는 인류의 지속가능한 성장을 위해 2020년을 기점으로 저탄소 경제체제에서 무탄소(에미션 제로·Emission Zero) 경제체제로 변화를 꾀하고 있는 상황이다. 이러한 변화는 해운분야에서도 예외가 아니다. 국제해사기구에서 선박온실가스 규제라고 할 수 있는 에너지효율 규정이 해양오염방지협약 부속서 6의 제4장(에너지 효율관리)으로 2011년 개정·채택된 것을 시작으로 최근 2030년까지 40%감축, 2050년까지 50% 감축이라는 온실가스 감축목표를 설정하여 본격적인 온실가스 감축을 위해 노력하고 있다. IMO는 감축목표를 달성하기 위한 단기조치, 중·장기 조치를 2023년까지 완성한다는 목표를 설정하고 장애요인 분석, 국가별 영향평가, 역량강화 및 기술지원과 연구개발에 관한 로드맵을 포함한 최종 전략 수립을 진행하고 있으나 문제는 국제해사기구(IMO) 2030 온실가스 감축목표 달성은 현재 사용되고 있는 화석연료로는 불가능하기 때문에 선박추진 연료로써 수소, 연료전지, 메탄올 등 대체에너지 개발을 대폭 지원하는 국가의 정책전환이 시급하며 이를 구체화할 수 있는 정책개발이 시급하다.

  • 세계경제 둔화에도 국제유가가 상승세로 전환되었다. 국제유가는 2012년 1/4분기에 이란 사태로 인해 급등했다가 2012년 2/4분기에는 유로존 위기 등으로 급락했던 국제유가가 하반기에 들어 상승세로 전환되었다. 그러나 세계경제의 부진이 지속되면서 실물수요 측면의 유가 상승압력은 낮은 수준을 유지한다. IMF 등 주요 기관은 유로존 위기 등으로 세계경제의 회복세가 약화되자 2012년과 2013년 세계경제의 성장률을 하향 조정했다. 특히, 금융위기 발생 이후 세계경제의 버팀목이 되던 신흥국 경제의 성장 둔화가 본격화 되면서 석유 등 실물 수요도 둔화되었다. 2012년 3/4분기 중국의 성장률은 7.4%로 7분기 연속 하락했으며, IMF와 Global Insight는 2012년 중구그이 경제성장률을 각각 7.8%, 7.4%로 전망했다. 다음은 삼성경제연구소가 발표한 "2013 국제유가의 향방"의 주요 내용을 요약 정리한 것이다.

  • 국내·외 사회 전 분야의 급속한 전자상거래 발전에 따라 해운·항만 분야에도 인터넷 사업의 진출기회가 확대되고 전략적 활동이 증가하고 있다. 그 중에서도 인터넷을 기반으로 세계가 하나의 시장으로 통합되는 경향을 보이고 있어 기업의 활동 범위가 광역화되고 있으며, 시간과 장소의 통합이 기업간 거래에서 중요시 되고 있다. 지금 세계 각 국은 해상연계 물류, 무역 등 물품의 중개 관련 사이트 및 선박 운송에 따른 각종 해운관련 서비스를 가상 공간에서 제공하는 사이버 해운 시장의 선점 및 구축에 모든 힘을 쏟고 있다. 해상 운송에 따른 각종 수송서비스를 생산, 공급하는 경제활동을 해운 활동이라 한다. 해운 시장의 불확실성, 다변성, 국제성, 개방성을 특성으로 하는 해운 거래는 전자상거래를 통해 효율적으로 처리될 수 있다. 즉, 해운 거래의 비용 감소와 양질의 서비스로 선주, 화주 등 거래 당사자들의 만족도를 높일 수가 있다. 이에 따라 국내에서도 오프라인상의 해운 거래소가 사이버 해운거래소로 옮겨질 예정이다. 가상 공간을 통한 해운 거래의 구체적인 장점은 다음과 같다. 구매업체는 기존 공급업체에 대한 접근 및 새로운 공급업체의 확보가 용이하며, 경쟁 입찰 등을 통해 저렴한 비용으로 물품을 구입할 수 있다. 판매 업체의 경우 채널 확장이 가능하며 판매비를 절감할 수 있다. 또한 e-Marketplace의 입장에서 보면 해운 산업 전체를 위한 새로운 시장을 형성할 수 있으며, 이를 통해 지속적인 수익 창출도 가능하다. 이러한 해운 거래의 B2B e-Marketplace의 출현은 향후 해운 거래의 새로운 패러다임으로 자리 잡을 것이다. 사이버 해운 거래소는 선박 매매와 용선, 화물 거래를 위한 선·화주의 연결, 표준화된 카탈로그 구축, 각종 전자문서 생성, 전자 결제, 온라인 보험 가입, 해운 선용품 판매 및 관련 정보 제공 등 해운 거래를 위한 종합적인 서비스가 제공되어야 한다. 이를 위해, 본문에서는 e-Marketplace의 효율적인 연계 방안에 대해 해운 관련 업종별로 제시하고 있다. 리스트 제공형, 중개형, 협력형, 보완형, 정보 연계형 등이 있는데, 이는 해운 분야에서 사이버 해운 거래가 가지는 문제점들을 보완하고 업종간 협업체제를 이루어 원활한 거래를 유도할 것이다. 그리하여 우리나라가 동북아 지역뿐만 아니라 세계적인 해운 국가 및 물류 ·정보 중심지로 성장할 수 있는 여건을 구축하는데 기여할 것이다.

An Analysis of Shipping Industry Awareness and Its Implications (해운산업의 인지도 분석과 인식 제고 방안)

  • This study investigated what the general public thinks about the shipping industry and how important it is. As a result of the study, more than half of the respondents answered that they knew a little about the shipping industry or that they were normally knew about the shipping industry. Regarding the necessity of budget input to prevent bankruptcy of national shipping companies, it was found that more than half of the respondents answered that it was necessary or moderate. Regarding the necessity of maintaining a national shipping companies, 53% of respondents said it was necessary, and 23% of respondetns said it was normal. However, when asked if they thought that maintaining a national shipping companies would benefit me and my family, 39% of respondetns answered "normal" and 28% of respondetns answered "mostly". As for the cause of Hanjin Shipping's bankruptcy, 49% of respondents said that the owners' family members were immoral and incompetent, and 17.4% of respondetns said that the shipping market conditions deteriorated. Regarding the necessity of fostering the shipping industry, foreign currency acquisition and service balance improvement through export of shipping services accounted for 43.5%, and smooth transportation of import and export cargo accounted for 36.5%. When asked what kind of damage I suffered from Hajin Shipping's bankruptcy, 54.6% answered other (not much), and 14.5% said inflation. Abouve these results, this study gave implication in terms of public promotion and transparent business management.

An Analysis of the Relationship between Market Rates and the Profits of Tramp Shipping (부정기선 해운업의 이윤과 금리의 관계 분석)

  • This study analyzes the relationship between shipping profit and market return in the tramp trade from January 2000 to October 2014. First, we carry out the causality test and find a causal relationship between the studied variables. Second, the estimates from the Johansen cointegration test show that shipping profit is cointegrated with market return, which implies that a long-run relationship exists among the variables. The empirical results thus imply that shipping firms need diverse risk management strategies.

  • The mutual risk management in port is really important for operating the enterprise between container terminals who provide port service and shipping liners who use the port service. This study is performed to contribute to obtain the competitive power of domestic shipping and harbor industry by getting solution of mutual risk management which can make Win-Win strategy on each other as an alternative idea. We suggested two kinds of management models to promote common benefits between container terminals and shipping liners. It is necessary to push positive support and cooperation from government and belonging related organizations for activating the Gwangyang port. In this study, we presented the efficient method to manage mutual risks between container terminals and shipping liners.

A Study on the Influence of Shipping Firms' Knowledge Management on their Service Capabilities (지식경영이 해운선사의 서비스 역량에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • In the modern management literature, knowledge has been recognized as a new strategic resource enabling a firm to create its competitiveness. Shipping companies under fierce competitive structure need to pay attentions to the utility of knowledge management. A shipping firm may develop its unique service capability by classifying, sharing, and transferring the data, information and knowledge obtained from both inside and outside its global service network. The current study attempts to analyze influential relationships between liner shipping firms' knowledge management and service capabilities. In order to achieve this goal, this study designed a knowledge chain model measuring shipping companies' knowledge management levels and tested its validity and reliability based on a total of 80 replied questionnaires from national and foreign liners. The empirical result presents that supportive and primary activities composing a knowledge chain could exert significant positive influences on the enforcement of shipping service capabilities. This research shows that the utility of knowledge management is adoptable in the maritime industry, and recommends that shipping firms should recognize strategic importance of knowledge and actively pursue knowledge management at an entire firm level.
