The Relationship between Economic Growth of Sea Port City and Ocean Industries: Focused on Busan Metropolitan City (해항도시의 경제성장과 해양산업 간의 관계 - 부산시를 중심으로 -)

  • This study examines the issue of causality between ocean industries and urban economic growth in the sea port city. To maximize economic advantage of Busan as a sea port city, we first need to analyze the effects of ocean industries on urban economic growth. This study focuses on the examination of the role of ocean industries and its related variations in economic growth at the urban level. Using data from Busan. Metropolitan City in Korea during 1985-2011, we find that the causality link between ocean industries and urban economic growth rates runs in both directions. Especially, industries of shipping/port, marine tourism, and shipbuilding were the most important variables in Busan economy. With this information, the empirical results show that ocean industries and its related variations have significant effects on urban economic growth. Based on these significant research findings, theoretical and practical implications were discussed.

  • 한국의 현대 해운업이 불과 반세기 만에 세계적인 수준으로 성장하는 데 해기사가 주도적인 역할을 했음은 주지의 사실이다. 이는 1960년대 중반에 시작된 해외취업과 외화획득, 선원송출업, 해운대리점업, 선박소유 등의 연관 산업의 발전을 통해 해운산업의 성장에 '내부 '파급효과'와 '외부경제 효과'를 미쳤기 때문이다. 그 중에서도 해외취업선원의 외화획득은 경제발전 초창기에 절대적으로 필요했던 외화를 제공했다는 점에서 그 경제적 의의가 컸다고 할 수 있다. 1965년부터 1999년까지 해외취업 선원들은 82억 6178달러를 벌어들인 데 반해, 파독 근로자들은 1963년부터 1977년까지 1억 15만달러를 국내로 송금한 데 그쳤다. 이 연구에서는 1978년에서 1992년까지 미국선사인 Lasco에 취업했던 해기사의 월급여명세서를 분석해 해기사의 평생 임금수입액을 계산해 볼 것이다. 분석 결과, 11년 5개월간 승선기간 동안 24만 3230달러(1억 6606만 7839원)을 벌어들인 것으로 나타났다. 이는 승선기간 월평균 120만 5282원의 수입을 올린 것으로 우리나라 제조업 월평균임금의 약 3.8배에 상당하는 것이고, 1963-1977년까지 파독근로자 1인의 평균외화송금액 5273달러에 비해 46배에 상응하는 것이다.

A Case Study on Implementation of the Shipping Market Information Service System (해운시황정보서비스시스템 구현 사례연구)

  • The necessity of shipping market information services has been on the rise which emphasizes the relevance of transaction information and market information to parties both in and outside the shipping industry. However, previous related researches have been restricted to explorations limited by the offerings of existing shipping market information providers. Users today require effective information, an efficient contents management system, interfacing to help the information provider, graphing and spread sheets to facilitate and present the analyzed information through diverse formats, and reliable web and mobile services to provide information effectively with limited human resources. As a first step, service information has to be defined, so that it takes into account user utility, information retrieval and data development. Second, benchmark information and services must be provided from leading shipbrokers and research institutes. Third, a review of the latest technical trends is required to identify the most suitable technologies for servicing shipping market information. Finally, analysis is required on the implementation of a system with selected technologies, as well as the development of channels to post information which have been analyzed by users. Such a process would enable the continual redefinition of the shipping market information users actively need. The application of an X-Internet based WCMS, with a single-window dashboard providing user-customized information, and used to obtain and manage processes, add spread sheets to sustain calculations using the latest information, graph results, and to input additional information following predefined rules. Access to data and use of the system would require agreement that the system will incorporate user data and user-analyzed information into the market report, web portal, and hybrid app to provide current shipping market information appropriately and accurately to service users.

A Forecast of Shipping Business during the Year of 2013 (해운경기의 예측: 2013년)

  • It has been more than four years since the outbreak of global financial crisis. However, the world economy continues to be challenged with new crisis such as the European debt crisis and the fiscal cliff issue of the U.S. The global economic environment remains fragile and prone to further disappointment, although the balance of risks is now less skewed to the downside than it has been in recent years. It's no wonder that maritime business will be bearish since the global business affects the maritime business directly as well as indirectly. This paper, hence, aims to predict the Baltic Dry Index representing the shipping business using the ARIMA-type models and Hodrick-Prescott filtering technique. The monthly data cover the period January 2000 through January 2013. The out-of-sample forecasting performance is measured by three summary statistics: root mean squared percent error, mean absolute percent error and mean percent error. These forecasting performances are also compared with those of the random walk model. This study shows that the ARIMA models including Intervention-ARIMA have lower rmse than random walk model. This means that it's appropriate to forecast BDI using the ARIMA models. This paper predicts that the shipping market will be more bearish in 2013 than the year 2012. These pessimistic ex-ante forecasts are supported by the Hodrick-Prescott filtering technique.

An Analysis on Development of Shipping and Inland Networks of Gwangyang Container Port (광양항 해운과 내륙 네트워크 발달에 대한 고찰)

  • Since ports play a role of gateway to the sea and hinterlands, it is essential to analyse the networks of shipping and inland when evaluating the function and development of a port. The container port of Gwangyang, starting to operate its facilities in 1998, has developed itself as a hub port. Using the data of shipping schedules of Korean ports and the measurement of centrality in sociology, this study analyses the process of world-wide shipping network expansion in Gwangyang and concludes some implications including earlier development of shipping networks due to incentives to shipping companies. Although Gwangyang port also has been expanding its inland network through developing trucking, railway transport, and coastal shipping, it has weakness in inland network as in the cases of interruption in 2004, resumption in 2009 and re-interruption in 2012 at coastal shipping. In 2000s the expansion of shipping and inland networks at the newly built container ports such as Pyungtaek, Ulsan, and Gunsan has enticed the competition among Korean ports at each hinterland. Nevertheless, the operation of Gwangyang container port is considered to affect indirectly the relocation of some manufacturers including Samsung Electronics. Studies on interrelation between development of container port and geographical demography of manufacturers are needed to assess the effects of container port on regional economy.

An Analysis of Compliance with Information Security Policy Effects on Information Security Ability and Behavior : Focused on Workers of Shipping and Port Organization (정보보안정책 준수가 정보보안능력 및 행동에 미치는 영향 분석 : 해운항만조직 구성원을 대상으로)

  • Recent accidents of customer information leakage increase the necessity of information security for organization and the importance of information security team for it. To strengthen information security, organizations make information security policy and ask the members to comply with it. In this regard, maritime organization also needs to structure information security policy and examine its ability and behavior. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of compliance with information security policy on the ability and behavior of workers in shipping and port organization. The results of investigation show that information security education and norm affect compliance with information security of the workers. On the contrary, the punishment of information security is insignificant. It is shown that the degree of compliance with information security significantly affects its ability and behavior of the workers in shipping and port organization.

An Empirical Analysis of Stock Price Reaction to M&A in Liner Shipping Companies (정기선사 M&A와 주가수익률 실증분석)

  • Since 1993, M&A activities have been frequent in Liner shipping market. This study examines the effect of M&A on stock price reaction for acquiring firms listed on the market. The study covers the period from 1993 to 2009 and uses 61 daily closing prices of the acquiring firms before and after the M&A announcement day and is analyzed through the market-adjusted model in an event study. After calculating short-term performance using abnormal returns(AR) and cumulative average abnormal returns(CAR) before and after 30 days from the day of event, the results on the test show that the firm's values slightly increased through the M&A, but it does not attest to the statistical significance. In addition, this study investigates the AR difference between estimating windows and post-event windows for the 3 cases of each period before and after 30 days, 15 days, and 7 days from the event day to analyse the impact of M&A on the addition of acquiring firm's value. Our findings suggest that the M&A between Liner shipping companies is targeted for the long-term business strategy instead of the instant rise in the value of the firm involved.

  • 물류 서비스는 경제 주체간의 원활한 상품 수송을 도모하여 구매 소비를 뒷받침하는 효율적 경제 및 시장의 필수조건이다. 한국의 물류산업의 경쟁력은 선진국에 비해 낮아 국내 물류활동 현황을 살펴보고 선진국의 물류 효율화 전략을 점검하여 물류 효율화 방안을 모색하여야 한다. 한국의 국가물류비와 기업물류비는 선진국에 비해 높은 수준이나, 비금속 등 일부 제조업의 기업물류비가 과도하게 높은 것으로 분석된다. 국내 물류산업의 문제점을 살펴보면 수요 측면에서는 2PL 의존도가 높은 것이 문제가 된다. 그룹 소속의 2PL 업체로 인해 물류 비효율이 발생하고 물류업계의 대형화, 전문화 실현에 어려움을 야기하고 있다. 공급측면에서는 물류전문기업이 부족하다. 영세기업 저부가가치 사업 위주의 산업구조로 인해 물류전문기업이 부족하여 물류 효율화 효과가 미미하다. 또한, 인프라 측면에서도 국내 물류 인프라가 미비한 현실이다. 높은 도로의존도로 과중한 수송비 부담 및 낮은 물류분야 표준화 수준으로 물류 효율저하가 우려된다. 한편 법제도 측면에서도 물류산업 관련 제도 개선이 미흡하다. 물류산업 관련 제도가 현장을 반영하지 못하고 있으며, 정부기업의 민간 참여 등의 불공정 물류 정책으로 국내 물류산업의 발전이 제한적이다. 다음은 현대경제연구원 이장균 수석연구위원이 발표한 "국내 물류산업의 문제점과 물류효율화 방안"의 주요 내용을 요약 정리한 것이다.

  • 최근 선박의 연료유 절감 및 경제운항에 대한 관심이 높아지면서 조선소를 중심으로 운항정보의 활용과 관련된 다수의 프로젝트가 진행되고 있으며 선박 설계, 기상예보 등을 통합한 다양한 시스템이 개발되는 등 선박의 최적운항지원 솔루션 시장이 빠르게 성장하고 있다. 하지만 현재 시장을 주도하고 있는 솔루션들은 설계정보를 중심으로 개발되어 선박을 운영하는 해운선사에서 요구하고 있는 성능기준을 만족하지 못하는 단점이 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 운영단계에서 축적되는 운항데이터와 해운선사의 경험과 노하우에 대한 정보가 반영된 경제운항 알고리즘을 개발하기 위한 현황 분석을 수행하였다.

해운이슈 - 캠코 "2012년 건화물선 시황전망" 발표

  • 2011년 건화물선 운임지수 평균값은 1,549p를 기록, 2010년 2,758p 대비 44% 가량 낮은 수준을 기록한 동시에 1,137p를 기록했던 2002년 이후 9년여만에 가장 낮은 수준을 기록하였다. 작년 9월 국제통화기금(IMF)에서 발표한 World Economic Outlook 기준 2012년 세계 경제 성장률은 4.0% 성장으로, 중국과 인도, 브라질 등 개도국들의 강한 성장이 미국과 유럽의 저성장을 상쇄할 것이라고 발표하였다. 그러나 IMF는 세계 경제가 유럽위기로 위험한 상황에 처해 있으며 중국 등의 이머징 국가도 위기의 영향을 받고 있다고 경고하며 올해 세계 경제 성장률이 하향 조정될 가능성이 있는 것으로 전망되고 있다. 그러나, 2012년 케이프선형을 둘러싼 수급여건은 다소 개선될 것으로 전망됐다. 다음은 캠코 선박운용 주식회사에서 발표한 "2012년 건화물선 시황전망"의 주요 내용을 요약정리한 것이다.
