  • Because offshore plant industry needs to design, deploy and operate much of equipment especially, the latest trend shows the installation of production facilities is augmented in the subsea. The installed facilities are very difficult to be repaired or changed because they are located in the subsea. For solving these problems, both the directly related information of the production like the optimal number, position and depth of wells and the distribution for effective operation and safety of equipment of subsea should be considered at the preliminary stage of FEED (Front End Engineering Design). The marine exploration is introduced in this paper for providing the fundamental technology to answer the questions related to above considering points. First, some kinds of the offshore plant facilities are enumerated and aims of marine exploration for the offshore oil/gas development are summarized. In addition to it, the main roles of marine survey, in the step of designing and installing offshore oil-gas plant, development are briefly listed. And then foreign examples are shown to help the reader's understand. This paper is hoped to be helpful for understanding the marine exploration that can be applied to offshore oil/gas plant and to be contributed to developing the domestic techniques in this field for the future.

  • Reflection seismic survey has been conducted using R/V Yuzmogeologia of Russia on the area of between northern part of Powell basin and South Scotia Ridge. 48-channel seismic data have been processed using Promax system. Hesperides and Eastern Deep located in the central part of the South Scotia Ridge show similar geological structure comprising two distinct sedimentary layers. The lower layer filled with fault breccia is considered to be formed with the expansion of the deeps. The upper layer is filled with pelagic sediments which implies this layer is formed after the spreading of the deeps has stopped. The south branch of the South Scotia Ridge is characterized by bigger width than the north branch. Topographical depression shown in the south branch is formed by many faults accompanied with the seafloor expansion of Powell basin.

  • Optimal data processing parameters were designed to attenuate multiples in seismic data acquired in the south-eastern area of the East Sea, in 2008. Bunch of multiples caused by shallow sea water depth were perceived periodically up to two way travel time of 1,750 ms at every 250 ms over seismic traces. We abbreviated sea bottom multiple as SBM, Peg-leg multiple as PLM, and free-surface multiple as FSM. To attenuate these multiples, seismic data processing flow was constructed including NMO, stack, minimum phase predictive deconvolution filter and wave equation multiple rejections (WEMR). Prevalent multiples were suppressed by predictive deconvolution and remaining multiples were attenuated by WEMR. We concluded that combining deconvolution with WEMR was effective to a seismic data of study area. Derived parameter can be applied to the seismic data processing on adjacent survey area.

  • High-resolution multichannel seismic data were collected in the coastal area near the Gori nuclear power plant to investigate Quaternary fault pattern and timing. A 12 channel streamer, a sparker, and a portable recorder were used for data acquisition. Because the group interval of the streamer was 6.25 m and the sparker can generate acoustic waves with the frequency content of up to 500 Hz, the data show a significant improvement both in horizontal and vertical resolution. The area surveyed is covered with 30-40 m thick Holocene sediments that constitute the mud belt along the southeastern coast of Korea. The survey area is characterized by the well discriminated Pleistocene and Holocene boundary and shallow gas-charged zones. A number of Quaternary faults were found in the sediment column, that are nearly vertical and extend north-south. The Quaternary faults, arranged at a spacing of a few hundred meters, suggest that they were formed in response to compression, although some of them reveal extensional characteristics. Locally, faults disrupt Incised-channel fills that are interpreted to have formed in the early stage of transgression after the beginning of the Holocene. Seismic sections suggest that shallow gas in the mud belt sediments made its way upward through the fractured fault planes. The tectonism responsible for the opening of the East Sea has not persisted since the late Miocene, but vigorous Quaternary faulting activity in the vicinity of the southeastern Korean Peninsula indicates that tectonic stability has yet to be achieved in this region underlain by the hotter than normal mantle.

  • S-wave, which provides lithology and pore fluid information, plays a key role in estimating gas-hydrate saturation. In general, P- and S-wave velocities increase in the presence of gas-hydrate and the P-wave velocity decreases in the presence of free gas under the gas-hydrate layer. Whereas there are very small changes, even slightly increases, in the S-wave velocity in the free gas layer because S-wave is not affected by the pore fluid when propagating in the free gas layer. To verify those velocity properties of the BSR (bottom-simulating reflector) depth in the gas-hydrate prospect area in the Ulleung Basin, P- and S-wave velocity profiles were derived from multi-component ocean-bottom seismic data which were acquired by Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) in May 2009. OBS (ocean-bottom seismometer) hydrophone component data were modeled and inverted first through the traveltime inversion method to derive P-wave velocity and depth model of survey area. 2-D multichannel stacked data were incorporated as an initial model. Two horizontal geophone component data, then, were polarization filtered and rotated to make radial component section. Traveltimes of main S-wave events were picked and used for forward modeling incorporating Poisson's ratio. This modeling provides S-wave profiles and Poisson's ratio profiles at every OBS site. The results shows that P-wave velocities in most OBS sites decrease beneath the BSR, whereas S-wave velocities slightly increase. Consequently, Poisson's ratio decreased strongly beneath the BSR indicating the presence of a free gas layer under the BSR.

  • Despite the various opening models of the southwestern part of the East Sea (Japan Sea) between the Korean Peninsula and the Japan Arc, the continental margin of the Korean Peninsula remains unknown in crustal structure. As a result, continental rifting and subsequent seafloor spreading processes to explain the opening of the East Sea have not been adequately addressed. We investigated crustal and sedimentary velocity structures across the Korean margin into the adjacent Ulleung Basin from multichannel seismic reflection and ocean bottom seismometer data. The Ulleung Basin shows crustal velocity structure typical of oceanic although its crustal thickness of about 10 km is greater than normal. The continental margin documents rapid transition from continental to oceanic crust, exhibiting a remarkable decrease in crustal thickness accompanied by shallowing of Moho over a distance of about 50 km. The crustal model of the margin is characterized by a high-velocity (up to 7.4 km/s) lower crustal (HVLC) layer that is thicker than 10 km under the slope base and pinches out seawards. The HVLC layer is interpreted as magmatic underplating emplaced during continental rifting In response to high upper mantle temperature. The acoustic basement of the slope base shows an igneous stratigraphy developed by massive volcanic eruption. These features suggest that the evolution of the Korean margin can be explained by the processes occurring at volcanic rifted margins. Global earthquake tomography supports our interpretation by defining the abnormally hot upper mantle across the Korean margin and in the Ulleung Basin.

  • Subsurface physical properties can be obtained and imaged by seismic exploration, and various algorithms have been developed for this purpose. In this regard, root mean square error (RMSE) has been widely used to quantitatively evaluate the accuracy of the developed algorithms. Although RMSE has the advantage of being numerically simple, it has limitations in assessing structural similarity. To supplement this, full-reference image quality assessment (FR-IQA) techniques, which reflect the human visual system, are being investigated. Therefore, we selected six FR-IQA techniques that could evaluate the obtained physical properties. In this paper, we used the full-waveform inversion, because the algorithm can provide the physical properties. The inversion results were applied to the six selected FR-IQA techniques using three benchmark models. Using salt models, it was confirmed that the inversion results were not satisfactory in some aspects, but the value of RMSE decreased. On the other hand, some FR-IQA techniques could definitely improve the evaluation.

  • For effective and accurate prediction of overpressure in the Efomeh field, located in the Niger delta basin of Nigeria, integrated seismic and borehole analyses were undertaken. Normal and abnormal pore pressure zones were delineated based on the principle of normal and deviation from normal velocity trends. The transition between the two trends signifies the top of overpressure. The overpressure tops were picked at regular intervals from seismic data using interval velocities obtained by applying Dix's approximation. The accuracy of the predicted overpressure zone was confirmed from the sonic velocity data of the Efomeh 01 well. The variation to the depth of overpressure between the predicted and observed values was less than 10mat the Efomeh 01 well location, with confidence of over 99 per cent. The depth map generated shows that the depth distribution to the top of the overpressure zone of the Efomeh field falls within the sub-sea depth range of 2655${\pm}$2m (2550 ms) to 3720${\pm}$2m (2900 ms). This depth conforms to thick marine shales using the Efomeh 01 composite log. The lower part of the Agbada Formation within the Efomeh field is overpressured and the depth of the top of the overpressure does not follow any time-stratigraphic boundary across the field. Prediction of the top of the overpressure zone within the Efomeh field for potential wells that will total depth beyond 2440m sub-sea is very important for safer drilling practice as well as the prevention of lost circulation.

  • In marine seismic surveys, the inevitable occurrence of trace gaps in the near offset resulting from geometrical differences between sources and receivers adversely affects subsequent seismic data processing and imaging. The absence of data in the near-offset region hinders accurate seismic imaging. Therefore, reconstructing the missing near-offset information is crucial for mitigating the influence of seismic multiples, particularly in the case of offshore surveys where the impact of multiple reflections is relatively more pronounced. Conventionally, various interpolation methods based on the Radon transform have been proposed to address the issue of the nearoffset data gap. However, these methods have several limitations, leading to the recent emergence of deep-learning (DL)-based approaches as alternatives. In this study, we conducted an in-depth analysis of two representative DL-based studies to scrutinize the challenges that future studies on near-offset interpolation must address. Furthermore, through field data experiments, we precisely analyze the limitations encountered when applying previous DL-based trace interpolation techniques to near-offset situations. Consequently, we suggest that near-offset data gaps must be approached by extrapolation rather than interpolation.
