  • 'Onnuri 2ho' is a new orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) variety developed by the National Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) in 2014. Four superior clones were selected and polycrossed for seed production to develop this new variety of orchardgrass. The agronomic growth characteristics and forage productivity of 'Onnuri 2ho' were examined at Cheonan from 2010 to 2011. Regional adaptation trials were conducted in Cheonan, Hoengseong, Jinju and Jeju from 2012 to 2014. 'Onnuri 2ho' showed growth habit of medium type in fall and spring. It is long in length of flag leaf with medium upper internode. Plant height of 'Onnuri 2ho' was 4 cm more than that of control variety, 'Amba'. Its heading date was 4 days later than compared to control variety, 'Amba'. Characteristics such as waterlogging and disease resistance of 'Onnuri 2ho' were stronger or better than those of control variety, 'Amba', Especially, the dry matter yield of 'Onnuri 2ho' (15,814 kg/ha) was increased 34 % compared to that of control variety, Amba (11,778 kg/ha). Nutritive feed values of 'Onnuri 2ho' appeared to be similar to that of control variety 'Amba' except in Vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD).

  • In this study, Fenton reaction was studied for the possibility of applying as advanced treatment and its optimal condition for the removal of refractory organics from the dye wastewater. Fenton reaction was applied to remove refractory organics after the bio-treatment (secondary treatment) inside test laboratory and on-site pilot plant. Wastewater from the secondary treatment was used and its $COD_{Mn}$ was measured as 30~50mg/L. After the Fenton reaction, the optimal condition was found as pH 3~3.5, reaction time 2~2.5hr, chemical input ratio of ($FeCl_2$(33%)/$H_2O_2$(35%)) was 3 : 1. When chemical input ratio of ($FeCl_2$(33%)/$H_2O_2$(35%)) was at its optimal, amount of sludge volume ($SV_{2hr}$) was 21~28%. With pilot plant test, removal rate was heavily influenced by the hydraulic retention time(HRT), and optimum value of HRT was 2.0 hr. When pilot plant($2m^3/d$) was placed on-site and operated continuously, it showed steady and fairly good treatment of COD where COD removal rate was 60~70%, treated water showed below 20mg/L.

  • It's essential process to study non-linear material function related to characteristics of compressibility and permeability when we predict the consolidation behavior of soft clay ground. In this study, laboratory tests were conducted to find out the material function using marine clay. Standard oedometer test and Rowe cell test were performed with conditions, which were classified into vertical drainage only, radial drainage only and vertical-radial drainage case. Modified oedometer test equipment was developed to find out the material function and special extrusion device was originated to minimize the sample disturbance effect. Reliability of the results in modified oedometer test could be confirmed by comparing with the Rowe cell's one. Effective stress - void ratio - permeability relations were analyzed using all testing results. As a result, void ratio with effective stress level could be expressed by the power function and permeability with void ratio could be expressed by exponential function. In soft clay with high initial water content and low shear strength, non-linear characteristics related to compressibility and permeability varied with wide range by the effective stress levels. It's important to note that non-linearity of the material function should be considered at prediction of the consolidation behavior.

  • In order to determine the variability of environmental characteristics of lightweight air-foamed soil using marine clay according to freezing-thawing and soaking conditions, unconfined compressive strength of the lightweight air-foamed soil samples made by changing the amount of cement under curing conditions of outdoor low temperature, underground or indoor wetting were observed. Compressive strength was not increased under freezing-thawing (temperature range of $-9.1^{\circ}C{\sim}17.2^{\circ}C$) regardless of the amount of cement but the more cement using, it was increased rapidly by underground curing conditions within 30 cm beneath ground level. Therefore, it is necessary to install insulation layer cutting off exterior cold air after construction of lightweight air-foamed soil in condition of freezing-thawing. Bulk density was increased too small under the long-time soaking condition, it tended to decrease rapidly when samples were dried up and had below 6% of water contents. But variability of compressive strength and bulk density was very small for preventing drying and keeping its wet state. The lightweight air-foamed soil that installed beneath ground water level or covered by soil can be evaluated as a long-term reliable construction material.

  • "Egreen" rye (Secale cereale L.) was developed by National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA. It was released in 2007 because of its excellent earliness and yield potential. Crossing was made by an open pollination with 10 rye lines in 1995. Many lines from the open pollinated population were handled in a mass selection program in subsequent generations. Among them the line 'SR95POP-S1-116-1-1-2'was selected for earliness and promising agronomic appearance and placed in yield trial for two years from 2003 to 2004. In 2005, it was designated "Homil 34" and subjected to regional yield trials. Over 3 years, "Egreen" averaged 8.34 MT ha-1 of forage yield (based on dry matter) harvested at the heading date of check variety "Olhomil", which was superior to other varieties such as "Olhomil" and "Koolgrazer" with an increase of 8% and 10%, respectively. Heading date of "Egreen" was April 22, 3 days earlier than that of "Olhomil". It would be recommended as a winter crop forforage and green manure before planting either maize or rice in Korea.

  • A single cross hybrid, Heukjinjuchal, is a black color waxy corn (Zea mays L.) developed by the maize breeding team at NICS in 2008. Heukjinjuchal was produced by crossing two inbred lines, KBW24 as seed parent and KBW2 as pollen parent. Ear length and ear diameter of Heukjinjuchal was 16.0 cm and 4.4 cm, respectively. The ratio of kernel set length/ear length was 89%, similar with that of a check hybrid, Chalok1. It is resistant to Northern corn leaf blight disease and also lodging tolerant. Fresh ear yield of Heukjinjuchal comparable with those of a check hybrid, Chalok1 in regional yield trials for three years. Seed production of this hybrid is relatively easy because of well overlapping period of silking and pollen dispersal between the two parents. This cultivar would be well adaptable to the whole country.

  • The western equatorial Pacific Ocean, where sea surface temperature is the warmest on the globe, is characterized by numerous convective systems and large annual precipitation. In this region, the cloudiness data with tops higher than 8km level obtained from the GMS-IR data are used to investigate the diurnal variation of cloudiness. The amplitude and phase of diurnal and semi-diurnal cycles are mainly investigated to examine details on the temporal and spatial structure of clouds. Cloudiness variation has typical cycles and each cycle is associated with the air-sea interactive phenomena. Spectral analysis on the cloudiness time series data indicates that 30-60 day, 17-20day, 7-8 day, diurnal and semi diurnal cycle are peaked. During Northern Winter and Southern Summer, the large cloudiness exsists over New Guinea, the adjacent seas of North Australia, and the open oceanic regions east of $160^{\circ}$E. Cloudiness diurnal variability over the lands and their adjacent seas is about 2.0 times larger than that over the open sea regions. That may be due to the difference of specific heat between the land and sea. The maximum and minimum cloudiness appeared at 18:00 and 09:00 hours over the land, and at noon and 21:00 hours over the sea, respectively. The amplitude of diurnal component over the land is 4,7 times larger than that of semi-diurnal component, and 1.5 times over the sea.

  • This research was carried out to estimate annual erosion and retreat rates by using datum-point and to identify the characteristics and causes of seasonal variations of sea-cliff slope in Pado-ri, Taean-gun. In the result, the erosion and retreat rates of sea-cliff were increased from spring to summer. The rates were increased rapidly between August and October, caused by the effects of extreme weather events such as severe rainstorms and typhoons, etc. Since then, the erosion and retreat rates of sea-cliff were decreased gradually, but the rates were increased again in winter due to the storm surge and mechanical weathering resulting from the repeated freezing and thawing actions of bed rocks. The factors that affect erosion and retreat rates of sea-cliff include the number of days with antecedent participation and daily maximum wave height. In particular, it turned out that the erosion is accelerated by strong wave energy during storm surges and typhoons. The annual erosion and retreat rates of study area for the past two years(from May 2010 to May 2012) were approximately 44~60cm/yr in condition of differences in geomorphological and geological characteristics at each point. These erosion and retreat rates were found to be higher than results of previous researches. This is caused by coastal erosion forces strengthened by extreme weather events. The erosion and retreat process of sea-cliff in the study area is composed by denudation of onshore areas in addition to marine erosion(wave energy).

  • Recently crosshole seismic tomography has come to be widely used especially for the civil engineering, because it can provide more detail information than any other surface method, although the resolution of tomogram will be inevitably deteriorated to some extent due to the limited wavefield aperture on the nonuniqueness of traveltime inversion. In addition, our field sites often consist of a high-velocity bed rock overlain by low-velocity rock, sometimes with a contrast of more than 45 percent, and furthermore the bed rock is folded. The first arriving waves can be then the refracted ones that travel along the bed rock surface for some source/receiver distances. Thus, the desirable first arrivals can be easily misread that cause severe distortion of the resulting tomogram, if it is concerned with (straight ray) traveltime inversion procedure. In this case, comparision with synthetic data (forward modeling) is a valuable tool in the interpretation process. Besides, abundant information is contained in the crosshole data. For instance, examination of tube waves can be devoted to detecting discontinuities within the borehole such as breakouts, faults, fractures or shear zones as well as the end of the borehole. Specific frequency characteristics of marine silty mud will help discriminate from other soft rocks. The aim of this paper is to present several strategies to analyze and interpret the crosshole data in order to improve the ability at first to determine the spatial dimensions of interwell anomalies and furthermore to understand the underground structures. To this end, our field data are demonstrated. Possibility of misreading the first arrivals was illustrated. Tube waves were investigated in conjunction with the televiewer images. Use of shot- and receiver gathers was examined to benefit the detectabilities of discontinuities within the borehole.
