In order to investigate in-line ground motions caused by earthquakes, we examine the multicomponent complex trace analysis method (MCTAM) for the synthetic data and apply it to real earthquake data. An experimental result for synthetic data gives correct information on the arrival times, duration of individual phases, and approaching angles for body waves. Rayleigh waves are also easily identified with the MCTAM. A deep earthquake with magnitude of 7.3 was chosen to test various polarization attributes of ground motions. For P waves, instantaneous phase difference between the vertical and the in-line horizontal components ${\phi}(t)$, instantaneous reciprocal ellipticity ${\rho}(t)$, and approaching angle ${\tau}(t)$ are computed to be ${\pm}180^{\circ},\;0{\sim}0.25,\;and\;-30^{\circ}{\sim}-45^{\circ}$, respectively. For S waves, ${\phi}(t)$ tends to vary while ${\rho}(t)$ have values of $0{\sim}0.3\;and\;{\tau}(t)$ remains near vertical, respectively. A relatively low frequency signal registered just prior to the S wave event is interpreted as a P-wave phase based on its polarization characteristics. Velocities of P and S waves are computed to be 8.633 km/s and 4.762 km/s, and their raypath parameters 0.074 s/km and 0.197 s/km. Dynamic Poisson's ratio is obtained as 0.281 from the velocities of P and S waves.
To interpret the seismic image precisely, random noises should be suppressed and the continuity of the image should be enhanced by using the appropriate smoothing techniques. Structure-Oriented Filter-Edge Preserving (SOF-EP) technique is one of the methods, that have been actively researched and used until now, to efficiently smooth seismic data while preserving the continuity of signal. This technique is based on the principle that diffusion occurs from large amplitude to small one. In a continuous structure such as a horizontal layer, diffusion or smoothing is operated along the layer, thereby increasing the continuity of layers and eliminating random noise. In addition, diffusion or smoothing across boundaries at discontinuous structures such as faults can be avoided by employing the continuity decision factor. Accordingly, the precision of the smoothing technique can be improved. However, in the case of the structure-oriented semblance technique, which has been used to calculate the continuity factor, it takes lots of time depending on the size of the filter and data. In this study, we first implemented the SOF-EP method and confirmed its effectiveness by applying it step by step to the field data. Next, we proposed and applied the corner response method which can efficiently calculate the continuity decision factor instead of structure-oriented semblance. As a result, we could confirm that the computation time can be reduced by about 6,000 times or more by applying the corner response method.
The data acquired from seismic exploration can be used to detect the existence of oil and gas resources through appropriate processing and interpretation. The seismic attributes indicating the existence of resources are extracted from amplitude information, where the Q-factor representing intrinsic attenuation plays an useful role of hydrocarbon indicator. So, the accuracy of Q-factor estimation is very important to investigate the existence of resources. In this study, we calculated the Q-factor and analyzed the error rate through a numerical example. To mimic real data, random noise was added to the synthetic data. With the noise-added data, the Q-factor was estimated and the error rate was analyzed by using the spectral ratio method (SRM) and peak frequency shift method (PFSM). Both methods provided a relatively accurate Q-factor when the signal-to-noise ratio was 90 dB. However, the peak frequency shift method (PFSM) produced better results than the spectral ratio method (SRM) as the level of random noise increased.

We introduce a statistical scheme to classify seabed from acoustic profiling data acquired using Chirp sonar system. The classification is based on grouping of signal traces by similarity index, which is computed using the K-L (Karhunen-Lo$\grave{e}$ve) transform of the Chirp profiling data. The similarity index represents the degree of coherence of bottom-reflected signals in consecutive traces, hence indicating the acoustic roughness of the seabed. The results of this study show that similarity index is a function of homogeneity, grain size of sediments and bottom hardness. The similarity index ranges from 0 to 1 for various types of seabed material. It increases in accordance with the homogeneity and softness of bottom sediments, whereas it is inversely proportional to the grain size of sediments. As a real data example, we classified the seabed off Cheju Island, Korea based on the similarity index and compared the result with side-scan sonar data and sediment samples. The comparison shows that the classification of seabed by the similarity index is in good agreement with the real sedimentary facies and can delineate acoustic response of the seabed in more detail. Therefore, this study presents an effective method for geoacoustic modeling to classify the seafloor directly from acoustic data.
Economists have long been involved in various studies, theoretical and empirical, on the economic gains from innovative activities and as their outcome, intellectual properties. In Korea, however, research in this field has experienced rather slow progress, partly due to the lack of data availability and the awareness of its importance. This study attempts to measure the economic impact of patents on market value of firms from a microeconomic point of view. Analyses are performed to examine the ex-ante market valuation of patent acquisition activities by investigating the effect of patent acquisitions on daily stock prices as well as on annual market values. The study on the effect of a disclosure of granted patents on daily stock prices reveals that the economic value of a firm's patent acquisition is fairly high. The study on listed firms also reveals that a firm's patent registration stock has a positive and statistically significant effect on its year-end market value. Therefore, it can be concluded that the analysis performed in this study supports the validity of Korea's current patent system. The result, however, does not guarantee the optimality of current system. Studies on various aspects of intellectual property should follow to shape the system into a socially optimal one.
This study examines the association between valuation and accrual information. According to accounting based valuation model, firm's value consists of net book value and abnormal earnings. Net book value and abnormal earnings are determined as the manager's accounting policy. Discretionary accruals may signal the manager's value expectation or be noisy factor of accounting variables. The results of this study are as follows; First discretionary accruals are associated to stock prices negatively but non-discretionary accruals are not to stock prices. This result suggests that discretionary accruals and non-discretionary accruals are the differential factors of the firm value. Second, the product term of discretionary accrual and net book value are associated to the stock price negatively but the product term of non-discretionary accrual and net book value are not associated to the stock price. the results indicate that discretionary accruals are noisy factors of net book value information. Third, the product term of discretionary accrual and net income are associated to the stock price negatively and the product tenn of non-discretionary accrual and net income are also associated to the stock price negatively, the results suggest that discretionary accruals are noisy factors of earnings.
To improve the performance of MEMS devices, fabricating single-crystalline silicon HARS (high aspect ratio structure) with thicknesses of up to several tens of micrometers has been an active research topic in recent years. However, achieving electrical isolation, which is required for actuating a structure or sensing an electrical signal, has been one of the main problems in single-crystalline silicon HARS fabrication technologies. In this paper, new isolation technologies using high aspect ratio oxide beams and sidewalls are developed to achieve electrical isolation between electrodes of single-crystalline silicon HARS. The developed isolation technologies use insulating oxide structural supports from either the structural sides or from the bottom. In this case because the trench oxide supports have a depth of several tens of ${\mu}m$, the effects of residual stress must be considered. In this paper, insulating supports are fabricated using PECVD TEOS films, the residual stress of the insulating supports is measured, and the effect of the residual stress on the structure is analyzed. It is shown using microresonators, that the developed isolation technologies can be effectively used for HARS using single-crystalline silicon.
Although geophysical methods are useful and generally provide valuable information about the subsurface, it is important to recognize their limitations. A common limitation is the lack of sufficient contrast in physical properties between different layers. Thus, multiple methods are commonly used to best constrain the physical properties of different layers and interpret each section individually. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) and shallow seismic reflection (SSR) methods, used for shallow and very shallow subsurface imaging, respond to dielectric and velocity contrasts between layers, respectively. In this study, we merged GPR and SSR data from a test site within the Cheongui granitic mass, where the water table is ~3 m deep all year. We interpreted the data in combination with field observations and existing data from drill cores and well logs. GPR and SSR reflections from the tops of the sand layer, water table, and weathered and soft rocks are successfully mapped in a single section, and they correlate well with electrical resistivity data and SPS (suspension PS) well-logging profiles. In addition, subsurface interfaces in the integrated section correlate well with S-wave velocity structures from multi-channel analysis shear wave (MASW) data, a method that was recently developed to enhance lateral resolution on the basis of CMP (common midpoint) cross-correlation (CMPCC) analysis.

Future satellite communication systems will be developed at Ka-band (20/30 GHz) owing to the relatively wide frequency allocation and current freedom from terrestrial interference for multimedia services. A serious disadvantage of the Ka-band, however, is the very high atmospheric attenuation in rainy weather. Synchronous CDMA drastically redces the effect of self-noise with several interesting features of CDMA for mobile communications such as fixible freuqncy rese, the capability of performin soft-handover and a lower sensitivity to interference. This paper evaluates the performance of a synchronous CDMA reture link for a Ka-band geostationary satellite communication system. For a fixed satellite channel whose characteristics depend on weather conditions, the signal envelope and phase for this channel is modelled as Gaussian. The bit error and outage probability, and the detection loss due to imperfect chip timing synchronization is analytically evaluated and the system capacity degaradation due to the weather condition is estimated. The two cases consist of the general case in which all users are affected by rain condition, and the worst case in which the reference user is only affected by rain attenuation. the results for two cases of rain condition clearly show that synchronous CDMA eases the power control requirements and has less sensitivity to imperfect power control.
