The Navy is in the process of developing a sonar-operation strategy to increase the effectiveness of underwater target seeking capability. HMS is the basic strategy to detect underwater targets. The advantages of HMS is that, it has a short preparation time to operate and can be always used regardless of sea conditions and weather. However, it is difficult to effectively detect underwater targets due to the interaction between marine environments and sonar-operations. During the research, the effectiveness of the HMS system's underwater target seeking capability was analyzed by integrating various search patterns and environment conditions into the simulation. In the simulation the ship target an evasive target within a set region. The simulation presented results for an effective searching methods of underwater targets. These research results can be used as foundation for advancing and improving the sonar operational tactics.
In the underwater image, it is not clear to distinguish the shape of the target due to underwater noise and low resolution. In addition, as an input of deep learning, underwater images require pre-processing and segmentation must be preceded. Even after pre-processing, the target is not clear, and the performance of detection and identification by deep learning may not be high. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish and clarify the target. In this study, the importance of target shadows is confirmed in underwater images, object detection and target area acquisition by shadows, and data containing only the shape of targets and shadows without underwater background are generated. We present the process of converting the shadow image into a 3-mode image in which the target is white, the shadow is black, and the background is gray. Through this, it is possible to provide an image that is clearly pre-processed and easily discriminated as an input of deep learning. In addition, if the image processing code using Open Source Computer Vision (OpenCV)Library was used for processing, the processing speed was also suitable for real-time processing.

In this paper, we propose the passive sonar signal processing technique for estimating target information using proximity sensor. This algorithm is performed by single sensor which is constituted underwater sensor network and has a hierarchical structure. The estimated parameter is the velocity, the depth, the distance and bearing at CPA situations and we can improve the accuracy of signal processing techniques through having a hierarchical structure. We verify the performance of the proposed method by computer simulation and then we check the result that 20% error can be occurred in maximum detectable range. We also confirm that proposed method has the reliability in the actual sea environment through the sea experiment.
In this paper, we propose a new clutter reduction algorithm, which rejects heavy clutter density in shallow water environments, based on a clustering method. At first, it applies the density-based clustering to active sonar measurements by considering speed of targets, pulse repetition intervals, etc. We assume clustered measurements as target candidates and remove noise, which is a set of unclustered measurements. After clustering, we classify target and clutter measurements by the validation check method. We evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm on synthetic data and sea-trial data. The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides significantly better performances to reduce clutter than the conventional algorithm.
General underwater target detection methods adopt short-time FFT for estimate target doppler. This paper proposes the efficient target detection method, instead of conventional FFT, using approximate FFT for distributed sensor network target detection, which requires lighter computations. In the proposed method, we decrease computational rate of FFT by the quantization of received signal. For validation of the proposed method, experiment result which is applied to FFT based active sonar detector and real oceanic data is presented.

We generally used electric optical sensors in order to detect and identify sea objects efficiently. However due to the limitation of view-angle, the region acquired from the sense is restricted. So it is necessary to generate panoramic image from sea images acquired from pan-tilt camera. Previous mosaicing method is not able to generate panoramic image for sea environment because intensity is similar to all region and time varying. In this paper, we proposed new algorithm for generating high-resolution panoramic image on sea environment. Proposed algorithm use single-view point model, applying mosaicing result in feature environment to in sea environment, we overcame the limitation of previous method. In the result of virtual and real experiment, we showed that proposed algorithm is efficient for generating sea panoramic image.

This paper illustratesthe impact of the temporal gap between satellite images and targetsize in mesoscale atmospheric motion vector (AMV) algorithm. A test has been performed using GEO-KOMPSAT-2A (GK2A) rapid-scan data sets with a temporal gap varying between 2 and 10 minutes and a targetsize between 8×8 and 40×40. Resultsshow the variation of the number of AMVs produced, mean AMV speed, and validation scores as a function of temporal gap and target size. As a results, it was confirmed that the change in the number of vectors and the normalized root-mean squared vector difference (NRMSVD) became more pronounced when smaller targets are used. In addition, it was advantageous to use shorter temporal gap and smaller target size for the AMV calculation in the lower layer, where the average speed is low and the spatio-temporal scale of atmospheric phenomena is small. The temporal gap and the targetsize are closely related to the spatial and temporalscale of the atmospheric circulation to be observed with AMVs. Thus, selecting the target size and temporal gap for an optimum calculation of AMVsrequires considering them. This paper recommendsthat the optimized configuration to be used operationally for the near-real time analysis of mesoscale meteorological phenomena is 4-min temporal gap and 16×16 pixel target size, respectively.

A sonobuoy is dropped onto the surface of water to estimate the bearing of an underwater target. A Directional Frequency Analysis and Recording (DIFAR) sonobuoy has an error in the specific angular section due to the method of estimating bearing and noise, which causes an error in target localization using multiple sonobuoys. In addition, the position of the sonobuoy continues to move, but since a sonobuoy with a GPS is intermittently arranged, it is difficult to estimate the exact position of the sonobuoy. This also causes target localization performance degradation. In this paper, we propose a technique to improve the target localization performance by compensating for bearing errors using characteristics of the DIFAR sonobuoy and multiple-sonobuoy position errors based on the intermittently arranged active sonobuoy with a GPS.

A ground moving target's velocity estimation algorithm applicable for a SAR-GMTI system using 2 channel displaced phase center antenna(DPCA) is proposed. In this algorithm, we assume target's across-track velocity can be estimated by along-track interferometry (ATI) and present a method to estimate target's along-track velocity. To accomplish this method, we first transform a radar-target geometry in which a moving target has zero velocity via altering a radar velocity such that target's velocity is reflected into it and next manipulate the spectral centers of the subapertures within the synthetic aperture. The validity of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through simulation results showing the performance of the target's velocity estimation and the enhancement of reconstructed target image quality in terms of resolution and SINR.

In this work, we have designed and manufactured radar target simulation equipment for the performance analysis of synthetic aperture radar(SAR) systems. First, we have explained the function and performance specification of the target simulation equipment and point target scenario generation for validation of the SAR system. In addition, we have developed a simple and accurate calibration method for the time delay of the SAR system using the manufactured target simulation equipment. We have analyzed the point target impulse response function of the SAR image acquired using the SAR system and the target simulation equipment. It was observed that the measured peak to side lobe ratio(=-13.25 dB) and resolution(=0.49 m) are in good agreement with the corresponding theoretical values.
