  • Recently, construction sites of offshore wind power tend to move from shallow water to deep water. From this tendency, the research on the support structure of offshore wind power in deep water will be a key issue. In this study, precast concrete block and suction pile are applied to existing jacket structure. In order to reduce the vibration of this structure, the tuned liquid damper is also applied in the precast concrete block. The applicability of the suggested jacket structure is evaluated by finite element analysis. And the vibration tends to decrease about 5%, when the tuned liquid damper is applied.

  • As developing the large-scale offshore wind farm is expected, the preliminary environmental impact assessment is very essential. In this study, the wave hindcast model is verified based on observed data at the coast around Wido which is among the candidate sites for developing the offshore wind farm. In addition, the effect of the wind turbine foundations on wave height is analyzed when total 35 wind turbines including monopile foundations of 5 m in diameter are installed. Calculation result of significant wave height is in good accord with observed data since the RMS error is 0.35 m. Moreover, it is found that the presence of the wind turbine foundations hardly affects wave height as wave damping ratio is less than 1%.

  • Wave conditions are crucial for offshore wind farm design, particularly in determining structural loads and layout. However, there is limited wave hindcasting research for the Wangdeungdo Island area, a potential offshore wind site. This study used the MIKE21 model for a year-long wave hindcast around Wangdeungdo in 2021. Validation showed high reproducibility for significant wave heights with RMSE values of 0.177 and 0.225 and Pearson correlations of 0.971 and 0.970 at Sangwangdeungdo and Buan buoys. Subsequent analysis of the wave characteristics near Wangdeungdo indicated significant seasonal variations and differences in maximum significant wave heights across locations, which are expected to significantly impact the design loads for offshore wind structures.

  • The construction of new renewable energy facilities is steadily increasing every year. In particular, the offshore wind farm market, which has abundant development scalability and a high production coefficient, is growing rapidly. The southwest sea has the highest possible offshore wind power potential, and related projects are to be promoted. This study presents a basic design procedure by the EUROCODE and considers structural safety in the development of an effective of shore wind foundation in the clay layer. In a previous study, the wind power generator of 5MW class was the main target, but the 8MW of wind turbine generator, which meets the technical trend of the wind turbine market in the Southwest sea, was selected as the standard model. Furthermore, a foundation that fulfills the geological conditions of the Southwest sea was developed. The structural safety of this foundation was verified using finite element method. Moreover, structural safety was secured by proper reinforcement from the initial design. Based on the results of this study, structural safety check for various types of foundations is possible in the future. Additionally, specialized structural design and evaluation guidance were also established.

  • The risk of offshore wind turbine support structures by scour has been proposed. The proposed utilize probabilities of scour depths and fragilities according to scour depth and a modification of a seismic risk analysis method. The probability distribution of scour depth was calculated using a equation which is suitable to consider marine environmental conditions such as significant wave height, significant period, and current velocity, and dynamic analysis was performed on an offshore wind turbine equipped with an suction bucket to find fragility. Then, the risk of offshore wind turbine support structure considering scour can be found by integrating the scour probability and the fragility.

  • Floating offshore structures keep its position by a mooring system against various kind of environmental loadings. For this reason, a reliable design of the mooring system is a key factor for initial design stage of a floating structure. However, there exists possibility of mooring failure, even the system is designed with enough safety margin, due to the unexpected extreme environmental conditions or long-term fatigue loadings. The breaking of one of the mooring lines may change the tension level of the other mooring lines, which can potentially result in a progressive failure of the entire structure. In this study, time domain numerical simulation of 10MW class wind-wave hybrid platform was carried out with partially broken mooring line. Overall platform responses and variations of the mooring line tension were numerically evaluated.

  • A damage detection method for the tripod support structure of offshore wind turbines is presented for structural health monitoring. A finite element model of a prototype tripod support structure is established and the modal properties are calculated. The degree and location of the damage are estimated based on the neural network technique using the changes of natural frequencies and mode shape due to the damage. The stress distribution occurring in the support structure is obtained by a dynamic analysis for the wind turbine system to select the output data of the neural network. The natural frequencies and mode shapes for 36 possible damage scenarios were used for the input data of the learned neural network for damage assessment. The estimated damages agreed reasonably well with the accurate ones. The presented method could be effectively applied for damage detection and structural health monitoring of various types of support structures of offshore wind turbines.

  • Multi-member lattice-type structures including jackets and tripods are being considered as good alternatives to monopile foundations for relatively deep water of 25-50 m of water depth owing to their technical and economic feasibility. In this study, the reliability analysis of bottom-fixed offshore wind turbines with monopile and/or multi-member lattice-type foundations is carried out and the sensitivities of random variables such as material properties, external wind loadings and scouring depth are compared with respect to different types of foundations. Numerical analysis of the NREL 5 MW wind turbine supported by monopile, tripod and jacket substructures shows that the uncertainties of soil properties affect the reliability index more significantly for the monopile-supported OWTs while the reliability index is not so sensitive to the material properties in the cases of tripod- and jacket-supported OWTs. In conclusion, the reliability analysis can be preliminarily carried out without considering soil-pile-interaction in the cases of tripod- and jacket-supported OWTs while it is very important to use the well-measured soil properties for reliable design of monopile-supported OWTs.
