The physical, mechanical and chemical properties of old and new Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) were analyzed. The old woods were from dismantled timbers of Bonjungsa temple. The crystallized resin in the latewood was observed by microscopic analysis. Also, reduction of specific gravity, occurrence of microscopic cleavage of tracheid was observed in the old wood. The angle of microscopic cleavage of tracheid is estimated with the same angle of micro-fibril angle of 52 layer. The bending, compression and shear strength of old world were decreased about 35-27% than those of new wood. Dynamic modulus of elasticity measured by ultrasonic nondestructive test has the tendency of reducing by the time elapse of the wood usage. Therefore, deterioration of wood could be measured by reduction of specific gravity and dynamic MOE. The static MOE and mechanical properties of old wood could be predictable by measuring dynamic MOE in the longitudinal direction. Extractives of the old wood in 1-% NaOH solution are larger quantity than new wood. Therefore the decay of the wood could be evaluated by analyzing the chemical compound, especially 1-% NaOH solution. The results of this research could be used for understanding and prediction of the changing properties with elapsing time of wood.

This study was aimed to develop a new ovoid applicator for vaginal high-dose rate intracavitary radiation therapy, evaluate uniformity of dose distribution, and assess clinical applicability. The authors evaluated dose uniformity of vaginal mucosa according to 5-different ovoid-separation using 2-channel and modified 3-channel ovoid applicator. There were no significant differences in the dose distribution along the vaginal mucosa with 2 and 2.5 cm separations, but there were between the 2-channel and 3-channel ovoid applicator with a separation of 3 cm or more. Although a low dose area was shown between two ovoid applicators with the 2-channel ovoid applicator, the dose distribution along the vaginal mucosa with the 3-channel ovoid applicator was very uniform.

Anatomical characteristics of volumetric composition, fiber length, vessel diameter, and crystalline properties of cellulose in kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) planted in the reclaimed land of Buan-si, Korea were examined to understand the growth characteristics using a light microscopy and an X-ray diffraction method. The samples of kenaf were taken from six positions (3 cm, 35 cm, 70 cm, 105 cm, 280 cm, and 320 cm) of each stem over the growth period (July, August, September, and October) after seeding in the mid-May. In the kenaf stem, phloem constituted 10 to 15 %, xylem 66 to 82%, and pith 7 to 19%. The ray, bast fiber, and remainder comprised 50%, 20%, and 30% of the phloem, respectively. The volume of vessel, ray, and fiber in the xylem was approximately 10, 15, and 75%, respectively. The proportion of cell wall was 30.92% at the base of stem and 46.40% at the top of stem, respectively. The average length of bast fiber and xylem fiber was about 2.8 mm and 0.9 mm, respectively. Radial and tangential diameters of vessel increased with the increase of growth period, while they decreased with increasing the stem height. Relative crystallinity ranged from 70 to 79% in phloem and from 50 to 56% in xylem. Cellulose crystallite width was about 3 nm both in the phloem and xylem. Thus, the volumetric composition and cell dimensions in the phloem and xylem appeared to be varied with the growth period and the stem height.
Calyx-end browning in sweet persimmon (Diospyros kaki) fruits is the postharvest disorder during the storage and shows different proportions by the cultivars. This study was to evaluate fruit texture characteristics at harvest and to learn how browning in fruits affects the cell structures in different cultivars. Persimmon cultivars included 'Fuyu', 'Jiro', 'Uenishiwase', 'Daiandangam', and 'Ro-19', which were harvested at the end of October in 2003 and investigated after 100 days storage. Fruit texture varied with different cultivars. 'Jiro' and 'Ro-19' fruits did not have browning symptoms while 'Daiandangam' fruits had approximately 80% browning of them. There were no visual differences for the cell structure in fruit peels between fruits without browning, such as 'Jiro' and 'Ro-19', and fruits with browning, such as 'Fuyu', 'Uenishiwase', and 'Daiandangam'. The most outer layers in a 'Jiro' fruit peel arranged one to two epidermis which could not induce browning in the tissues, while 'Fuyu' had two to three layers, inducing a browning symptom. Although there were no differences for the tissue structure between browning and normal fruits, browning fruits did not have apparent cell organelle and proceeded degradation of cell walls in the flesh.
Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the initial lateral cephalometric characteristics in two groups of patients: those that had mandibular setback surgery only and those that had mandibular setback surgery with advancement genioplasty. Methods: The lateral cephalograms of thirty-one patients were studied. Twenty-one Class III patients (group A) had only madibular setback surgery Twelve Class III patients (group B) had mandibular setback surgery with advancement genioplasty. Results: Differences between two groups were found in N-Me, ANS-Me, Occlusal Plane angle, Palatal Plane to U1, Mandibular Plane to L1, Mandibular Plane to L6, SN to U1, Sn-Stms, and Pog' projection. Compared to group A, group B showed more linguoversion and extrusion of upper incisors, more extrusion of lower incisors and lower first molar, and more steepness of the occlusal plane. N-Me, ANS-Me, and Sn-Stms were also longer in group B. But Pog' projection was shorter than group A. Conclusion: We conclude that certain initial lateral cephalometric characteristics may help indicate the inclusion of advancement genioplasty when mandibular setback surgery is planned in skeletal Class III patients.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the characteristics of patients and teeth referred to a university dental hospital for endodontic problem. Materials and Methods: From January, 2017 to December, 2018, patients who were referred to a university dental hospital for endodontic problem were collected from clinical records. A total of 1171 patient records were analyzed. The status of the referred teeth was divided into three groups according to whether they were treated endodontically based on radiographs and clinical records at the time of referred visit. Results: 69.9% of the referred teeth were maxillary and mandibular first and second molars. The average time from referral to actual visit is 9.03 days and 65.6% of the case referred with referring letter. The most primary reasons of referral were persistent clinical symptom (pain, swelling, and sinus tract) (37.9%), diagnosis difficulty (16.7%), blockage of canal space (13.8%) and difficult tooth anatomy (11.4%). In the case of referral before endodontic treatment, the most primary reason of referral was failure to make a proper diagnosis. If the teeth were referred in the middle of endodontic treatment, the most primary reason of referral was persistent clinical symptom and blockage of canal space. In the case of referral after root canal filling, the most primary reason of referral was persistent clinical symptom. Conclusion: In the case of molars, the rate of persistent clinical symptom and blockage of canal space were the most primary reason of referral, and the rate of apical surgery and management of trauma was high in the case of anterior teeth.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the trends and characteristics of 'stress urinary incontinence' research through word frequency analysis, and their relationships were modeled using word embedding. Abstract data of 9,868 papers containing abstracts in PubMed's MEDLINE were extracted using a Python program. Then, through frequency analysis, 10 keywords were selected according to the high frequency. The similarity of words related to keywords was analyzed by Word2Vec machine learning algorithm. The locations and distances of words were visualized using the t-SNE technique, and the groups were classified and analyzed. The number of studies related to stress urinary incontinence has increased rapidly since the 1980s. The keywords used most frequently in the abstract of the paper were 'woman', 'urethra', and 'surgery'. Through Word2Vec modeling, words such as 'female', 'urge', and 'symptom' were among the words that showed the highest relevance to the keywords in the study on stress urinary incontinence. In addition, through the t-SNE technique, keywords and related words could be classified into three groups focusing on symptoms, anatomical characteristics, and surgical interventions of stress urinary incontinence. This study is the first to examine trends in stress urinary incontinence-related studies using the keyword frequency analysis and word embedding of the abstract. The results of this study can be used as a basis for future researchers to select the subject and direction of the research field related to stress urinary incontinence.
Synchrotron radiation (SR) has several advantages over convetional x-rays, including its phase, collimation, and high flux. A synchrotron radiation beamline 5C1 at Pohang Light Source (PLS) was recently built for imaging applications. We have shown that a SR imaging system is useful in imaging microscopic structures. SR with broad-band energy spectrum were adjusted to an object by Si wafers and their energy were approximately ranging from 6 keV to 30 keV. SR were passed through an object and finally transformed into visible lights by CdWO$_4$ scintillator screen. The visible lights which were reflected at an angle of 90 degrees by gold plated mirror were detected by a CCD camera and the image data were acquired using image acquisition system. A high-resolution phantom, capacitor, adult tooth, child tooth, cancerous breast tissue, and mouse lumbar vertebra were imaged with SR imaging system. The Objects were rotated within the field of view of the CCD detector, and their projection image data were obtained at 250 steps over 180 degrees rotation. Image reconstructions were carried out in a PC by using IDLTM(Research systems, Inc., US) program. The spatial resolution of the images acquired by the SR imaging system was measured with a high-resolution chart manufactured for several micrometer resolution. The specimens were also imaged with conventional x-ray radiography system to compare the image quality of radiography obtained with the SR imaging system. The results showed more structural details and high contrast images with SR imaging system than conventional x-ray radiography system. The SR imaging system may have a potential for imaging in biological researches, material applications, and clinical radiography.
Purpose: Population based structural and functional maps of the brain provide effective tools for the analysis and interpretation of complex and individually variable brain data. Brain MRI and PET standard templates and statistical probabilistic maps based on image data of Korean normal volunteers have been developed and probabilistic maps based on cytoarchitectonic data have been introduced. A quantification method using these data was developed for the objective assessment of regional intensity in the brain images. Materials and Methods: Age, gender and ethnic specific anatomical and functional brain templates based on MR and PET images of Korean normal volunteers were developed. Korean structural probabilistic maps for 89 brain regions and cytoarchitectonic probabilistic maps for 13 Brodmann areas were transformed onto the standard templates. Brain FDG PET and SPGR MR images of normal volunteers were spatially normalized onto the template of each modality and gender. Regional uptake of radiotracers in PET and gray matter concentration in MR images were then quantified by averaging (or summing) regional intensities weighted using the probabilistic maps of brain regions. Regionally specific effects of aging on glucose metabolism in cingulate cortex were also examined. Results: Quantification program could generate quantification results for single spatially normalized images per 20 seconds. Glucose metabolism change in cingulate gyrus was regionally specific: ratios of glucose metabolism in the rostral anterior cingulate vs. posterior cingulate and the caudal anterior cingulate vs. posterior cingulate were significantly decreased as the age increased. 'Rostral anterior'/'posterior' was decreased by 3.1% per decade of age ($P<10^{-11}$, r=0.81) and 'caudal anterior'/'posterior' was decreased by 1.7% ($P<10^{-8}$, r=0.72). Conclusion: Ethnic specific standard templates and probabilistic maps and quantification program developed in this study will be useful for the analysis of brain image of Korean people since the difference in shape of the hemispheres and the sulcal pattern of brain relative to age, gender, races, and diseases cannot be fully overcome by the nonlinear spatial normalization techniques.
This study aims to prepare the basic data of the teeth color by measuring analyze mode using the color of the maxillary anterior teeth (maxillary central incisor, lateral incisor, canine) of the college students in their twenties as the dental colorimeter. The maxillary anterior teeth of the subjects of study as 467 students (male 89, female 378) were measured from 14 November to 2 December, 2011, so the color of total 1,401 teeth was examined, and oral health and eating habit attributes were researched. The survey results were as follows. 1. The color of maxillary anterior teeth was changed from maxillary central incisor to maxillary canine, brightness ($L^*$) was decreased $76.79{\pm}4.86$ to $69.72{\pm}4.62$, red chroma ($a^*$) was increased $2.02{\pm}2.00$ to $4.10{\pm}2.60$, yellow chroma ($b^*$) was increased $15.51{\pm}3.42$ to $20.10{\pm}3.46$. 2. Brightness ($L^*$) was different according to sex (p< 0.001), major (p<0.001), grade (p<0.001), smoking (p<0.001), oral health education (p<0.01), daily brushing frequency (p<0.001), brushing method (p<0.05), oral hygiene devices (p<0.001), and red chroma ($a^*$) to major (p<0.001), daily brushing frequency (p<0.05), brushing time after meals (p<0.01), oral hygiene devices (p<0.01), and yellow chroma ($b^*$) to brushing time after meals (p<0.01), subjective tooth color (p<0.001). 3. Brightness ($L^*$) of eating habit attributes was different according to coke, candy ($R^2=0.053$, p<0.05). In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the color of maxillary anterior teeth has differences in brightness ($L^*$), red chroma ($a^*$), yellow chroma ($b^*$) from each tooth, also these showed various tendency according to the oral health and eating habit attributes.
