A number of hydrographic studies and some recent current measurements around Chejudo Island suggest an existence of a clockwise residual flow in the west and north coasts of the island all the year round. On the eastern side of the island the Tsushinma Current flows northward and northeastward. The contribution of tide-induced residual currents to the observed residual. flow around the island was examined here through numerical solution of the two-dimensional nonlinear shallow-water equations. The calculated tide-induced residual currents show a clockwise circulation around the island. Significant residuals of 2-4cms$\^$-1/are confined over sloping bottom topography around t he island and the far-field residuals are negligibly small. The inclusion of a permanent current into the model was also attempted in order to see the effects of the Tsushima Current system on the residual circulation around the is land. It was found that combined effects of tide-induced residuals and the permanent current field associatedwith the Tsushima Current explain qualitatively not only the observed clock wise residuals in the west and north coasts but also the northward flow on the eastern side of the island.
Two hydrographic surveys along with direct current measurements using drogues and moored current meters were conducted in Cheju Strait during April and May, 1983. The data clearly demonstrate that a branch of the Kuroshio characterized by high temperature and high salinity enters the Cheju Strait after turning around the western coast of Cheju-Do. The width of the current turning west of Cheju-Do is about 60 km and reduces to 20∼30 km in the strait, resulting in a high speed(>10 cm/s) at the western entrance and in the middle of the strait, compared with a low speed (>5 cm/s) west of Cheju-Do. The Tsushima Current water also originating from the Kuroshio shows its influence in the eastern part of the Cheju Strait. Thermohaline fronts formed between the warm current waters and the coastal waters suggest the southward extension of the Yellow Sea Coastal Water west of the Cheju Strait. A warming of the warm current waters occurs in May, while a cooling takes place in other areas. The major freshening and cooling of water take place in the middle of the Cheju Strait in May due to the intrusion of cold and low salinity water from the west of the Cheju Strait.

The circulation of sea water was simulated by two dimensional tide model using the main four tidal components and permanent current driven by inflow/outflow across open boundaries. According to the residt of tide model, the maximum speed of eastward flow on the Cheju Strait is twice higher than that of westward flow. According to the result of permanent current, the flow of permanent current showing semi-circle pattern in the southern part of Kojedo was due to variation of topography. According to the result of circulation model in the Cheju Strait, eastward flow entering in the southern waters from the Yellow Sea of Korea were dominant, but outflows westward were weak. These results suggest that it was difficult to move for suspended particulate matter into the Yellow sea from the southern waters through Cheju Strait.
The analysis of long- period sea level variations with tidal record data around Korea, Japan, and Russia shows that about half of the variations are due to atmospheric influences. The sea level variation by water movements is the largest in the coasts along the Tsushima Current, and becomes smaller in the distant areas. It suggests that the sea level varications are related with the Tsushima Current. The effect of sea level variations to ocean circulation has been studied with a numerical model allowing barotropic sea level fluctuations, like the result with GCM (Semtner) model by Pang et al.(1993), the present model also shows that waters basically flow along isobaths over the last China Sea after geostyophic adjustment around Taiwan. However, barotropic sea level fluctuation makes the basic circulation in the Yellow Sea, which waters flow into the central Yellow Sea and out along the west coast of the Korean Peninsula. Besides this, barotropic sea level fluctuation makes long period waves over the shelf area as the Kuroshio varies. By the waves, the basic circulation in the Yellow Sea is disturbed, so that the flow pattern of oppositely flowing into the Yellow Sea along the west roast of the Korean Peninsula appears. In the Yellow Sea circulation, it seems that northwest winds strengthen the basic circulat ion In winter, and southeast winds strengthen the disturbed circulation in summer. Another point appeared by the long period wave is that the Tsushima Current possibly originates in different areas. There have been two opposing argues on the area in which the Tsushima Current originates the southwest sea of Kyushu Island and the adjacent sea of Taiwan. Through this study, we found that both of them seem to be important areas for the origin of the Tsushima Current, and one of them is possibly strengthened by long period waves. The long period waves given by the variation of the Kuroshio Current in the adjacent sea of Taiwan propagate to the Korea Strait as forced waves. The wave continuously propagates to the last Sea through the eastern channel, but reflects in the western channel due to bottom topography. The reflected waves propagate southwestward along the last China Sea as free waves and determine the sea level variations with forced waves.

Subtidal surface currents are derived from HF radar measurements in the Saemangeum coastal ocean of the Yellow sea in July 2002 and from September to November 2004. The surface current field is analyzed to examine the effect of wind, river plume and coastline change on the spatial distribution and temporal variation of the surface currents. In July 2002, average wind speed was 0.5 m/s and freshwater discharge from the Keum River was $0.88{\times}10^7\;ton/day$. Temporal mean currents ($\overline{U}$) flow to the northwest with speed of $7{\sim}10\;cm/s$ near the Keum River estuary, to the west as fast as 13 cm/s near the opening gap of the Saemangeum $4^{th}$ dyke, and to the northwest off the Gogunsan-archipelago. This flow pattern is a result of the Keum River plume dispersal and tide-residual currents from the opening gap of the Saemangeum $4^{th}$ dyke. Time series of spatially-averaged current (<$U-\overline{U}$>) direction is highly (r=0.98) correlated with wind direction. From September to November 2004, the opening gap of the Saemangeum $4^{th}$ dyke was closed, northwesterly wind blew with speed of 2.5 m/s on average and the Keum River discharge was $1.19{\times}10^7\;ton/day$. Temporal mean current field ($\overline{U}$) has weak surface flow in most of the coastal ocean and relatively strong currents flow to the southwest with speed of 10 cm/s along the shape coastline of the Gogunsan-archipelago and the Saemangeum $4^{th}$ dyke. The strong flow is generated by the prevailing northwesterly wind which pushes the Keum River plume toward the Saemangeum $4^{th}$ dyke. The residual currents from the opening gap of the Saemangeum $4^{th}$ dyke disappeared and correlation coefficient between time series of spatially-averaged current () direction and the wind direction is 0.69.
Two ocean current power parks are suggested in the front and back of the Garyuk draining sluices of Saemankeum in Korea. They are characterized by installing a plurality of ocean current turbine generators which are arranged in five rows respectively in the land-side ocean current power park behind the Garyuk draining sluices and in the sea-side ocean current power park before the Garyuk draining sluices, generating electricity using the ocean current flowing through the Garyuk draining sluices in the ebbs and tides of Yellow sea. The potential energy of tidal difference of 2.611m at neap in Saemankeum can be converted into the kinetic energy of high speed ocean current via the Garyuk draining sluices which makes it possible to run the ocean current power parks on a large scale. The total facility capacity of two ocean current power parks that consist of 240 ocean current turbine generators with 4m diameter of turbine blades is about 134MW, and the expected total annual power output is about 586GWh.

Ocean wave parameters are important for safety and efficiency of operation and routing of marine traffic. In this paper, by using X-band marine radar, we try to develop an effective algorithm for collecting ocean surface information such as current velocity, wave parameters. Specifically, by exploiting iterative refinement flow instead of using fixed control schemes, an effective algorithm is designed in such a way that it can not only compute efficiently the optimized current velocity but also introduce new cost function in an optimized way. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is very effective in retrieving the wave information compared to the conventional algorithms.

From November 1968 to March 1970, a series of drift bottle experiments were carried out in waters adjacent to and in Chinju Bay with the following results. Of the bottles released, $50\~69$ per cent were recovered. 1. The circulation of Chinju Bay is usually caused by the tidal current except during the winter season when the northwest monsoon prevails to cause a wind-drift current. 2. Sea water in the southern part of Chinju Bay flows northward at ebb tide. The ebb current east of the central submarine bank in Chinju Bay flows northeastward toward Samchonpo Channel through the eastern depression of the bank contributing to form a cyclonic eddy. The ebb current west of the bank, however, flows northward toward Noryang Channel through the western depression of the bank. 3. The ebb current nea. the southernmost part of Chinju Bay flows eastward toward Chijok Channel. 4. At flood tide, the main stream of the tidal current in Noryang Channel flows eastward. Turning smoothly to the right, the southern branch of the flood current flows southward through the depression and along the isobaths at the western margin of the central submarine bank, while the northern branch, turning to the left, flows into the Chin-gyo Bay of Hadong. 5. flood current in the eastern area of Kwang-yang Inlet runs northeastward toward Noryang Channel. A small eddy develops near Kwanumpo of Namhae Island. 6. The results suggest that such a drift bottle experiment can be recommended for the attestation of currents, although it is not suitable for a quantitative study of coastal currents.
