The conditions of Soxhlet extraction and HPLC analysis were examined for the determination of antioxidants used for polyolefins manufacturing. The extraction with methylene chloride in a Soxhlet apparatus for 10 hours and above provides almost complete recovery of the additives from polyolefins. The determination of the antioxidants including BHT, Irganox 1076, Irganox 1010 and Irgafos 168 could be successfully performed by using reversed-phase HPLC under gradient elution where the baseline separation of all four antioxidants in a single run was possible. In addition, the antioxidants inherently contained in commercial LLDPE and OPP films were identified and quantitatively determined.

In the present study, anti-oxidative and the RMC proliferation inhibitory propeties of 80% ethanol extracts from 63 kinds of traditional medicines were investigated. Inhibitory effects of RMC proliferation were showed that Dalbergia odorifera T. Chen., Melia azedarach Linn$\acute{e}$ and Hydnocarpus anthelmintica Pierre. Among them Hydnocarpus anthelmintica Pierre had the highest anti-oxidative activity ($ORAC_{PE\;value}=1.6$, DPPH = 81.1), but Dalbergia odorifera T. Chen. and Melia azedarach Linn$\acute{e}$ had no effects. These results suggest that the Hydnocarpus anthelmintica Pierre could prevent or protect from kidney disease as antioxidant and anti-proliferative agent for RMC.
The composites(PM-A-PM-I) of 9 groups containing 7 kinds of hot water extracted medicinal plants were produced and evaluated its antioxidative activity. Each medicinal plants used these composites were analyzed in primer research that its anti oxidative activity was high. In the composites of medicinal plant, electron donating ability was higher than 70% in all sample. PM-D, PM-E and PM-F were significantly higher than others. Reducing power have similar tendency to electron donating ability. PM-D was the strongest in hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, followed by PM-E. In linoleic acid system, antioxidative activity of all sample was showed more than 50%, except PM-A. Especially PM-E and PM-F have significantly higher activity. Nitrite scavenging effect was significantly increased by PM-D, PM-E and PM-F added to Inula Japonica Thunberg. In these results, we suggested that high-er antioxidative activity of PM-D, PM-E and PM-F may be responsible for the contents of phenolic compounds present in Inula Japonica Thunberg. And thought to be enhanced by the synergy effect of the water extracted medicinal plants in the composite.
Interrelation between the antioxidative activity of hot-water extracts of 130 medicinal plants and their cellular antimutagenic activity was investigated. Antioxidative activity was evaluated by assaying electron-donation to DPPH free radical and scavenging of hydroxyl radical $({\cdot}OH)$ generated through Fenton rection, respectively. All medicinal plants examined in this study exhibited markedly electron-donating ability and radical scavenging ability in each assay system. The results demonstrated the fact that Pilbal (Piper longum L.) is the strongest in electron-donating activity, on the other hand, that Seokgok (Dendrobium moniliforme L.) is the strongest in ${\cdot}OH$ scavenging activity. When evaluated their antioxidative activities, 24 medicinal plants including Jimo (Anemarrhena asphodeloides Bunge) were found to be the medicinal plants carrying strong antioxidative activity, which exhibited more than 50% activity compared to the control group in both electron-donating and free radical scavenging. The experiment was also performed to examine whether 11 medicinal plants having significant antimutagenicity damage DNA in the presence of $Cu^{2+}$, showing the fact that all samples tested, except Taeksa (Alisma canaliculatum All. Br.), Paekjain (Nitraria sibirica Pall) and Ohyak (Lindera strychifolia Sieb. et Zucc. Villar) are capable of inducing DNA strand break. We also found that Taeksa and Paekjain strongly block DNA strand break induced by chemical mutagen mitomycin C.

We have tested 41 herbal medicines to search for a natural substance with antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans and five types of oral bacteria. We have also investigated antioxidative activity of these herbal medicines. Antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans and five types of oral bacteria was analyzed using ethanol extracts of herbal medicines. Extracts from Illicium verum and Amomum xanthioides showed 98% inhibitory activity against Sterptococcus mutans. The effect of Thuja orientalis on S-1 and Thuja orientalis and Amomum xanthioides on S-2 were 95% and 94%, respectively. Nelumbo nucifera was 94% effective on S-5. The inhibitory activities of the herbal medicines against glucosyltransferase (GTase) were determined using purified from Streptococcus mutans and five types of oral bacteria. Extract from Illicium verum and Amomum xanthioides showed 94% effectiveness on Streptococcus mutans. Amomum xanthioides showed 95% effectiveness on S-1 and Thuja orientalis showed 96% effectiveness on S-5. In antioxidant activities of the herbal medicines, extract from Thuja orientalis showed the highest level of 81.08% DPPH radical scavenging activity and Illicium velum extract also showed high antioxidative activity of 80.45%. Thuja orientalis had a large amount of phenolic compound with $115.24\;{\mu}g/mL$ among the herbal medicines.
In order to increase the antioxidant effect and preference of jujube-omija herbal sauce, we added ethanol extracts of 12 kinds of food and 12 kinds of medicinal herb to the sauce, and then evaluated the antioxidant activity and sensory characteristics. The antioxidant activity of the jujube-omija herbal sauces was greatly increased by the addition of ethanol extracts of foods such as green tea, mugwort, mint, lemon, leek, etc. and those of medicinal herbs such as ginseng. pine needle, the root of arrowroot, orange peel, etc.. Due to the high content of phenolic compounds, the ethanol extracts foods and medicinal herbs appeared to be responsible for high electron-donating ability and low hydroperoxide productivity. While the jujube-omija sauce with the extracts of green tea, mugwort, ginseng and pine needle were not preferred by the panels due to bitter taste and aroma, those of lemon, fruit of Chinese quince, orange peel, etc. were preferred with their sweet and a little sour taste and showed a high antioxidant activity. Especially, lemon juice was the best to increase the antioxidant activity and the preference of the jujube-omija herbal sauce.
Antioxidative effect of 42 medicinal plant extracts was screened to search natural antioxidants. The extracts of Terminalia chebula, Caesalpinia sappan, Sanguisorba officinalis, Rubus coreanus, and Alpinia katsumadai showed strong inhibition effect on DPPH radical, and LDL oxidation. Those of Eugenia caryophyllata, Alpinia officinarum, Zingiber officinale, Xanthium strumarium, Sophora japonica, Aristolochia contorta, and Alpinia katsumadai exhibited potent antioxidative activity on linoleic acid peroxidation. Among 42 medicinal plant materials, the extract of Terminalia chebula showed the highest scavenging activity $(3.08\;{\mu}g/ml)$ on DPPH radical which was higher than that $(13.52\;{\mu}g/ml)$ of ${\alpha}-tocopherol$. The extract of Terminalia chebula showed also stronger inhibition activity on LDL oxidation than that of ${\alpha}-tocopherol$ did.
The antioxidative activity was measured on the substances of water and ethanol soluble extract from Astragalus membranaceus Bunge, Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat, Lycium chinensis Miller, Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer, Angelica gigas Nakai, Zizyphus jojoba Miller, Paeonia lactiflora Pallas, Cnidium officinale Makino by four different in vitro experimental models of DPPH (a,a'-diphenyl-$\beta$-picrylhydrazyl) method, superoxide dismutase like activity, thiocyanate method, and TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) method. The Lycium chinensis Miller contained the highest amount of polyphenolic compounds. The electron donating ability of water extract from Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer and ethanol extract from Chrysanthemum were higher than those of the others. The superoxide dismutase-like activity of water extract from Astragalus membranaceus Bunge was the highest among those of all the others. The water extract from Zizyphus jujuba Miller showed the highest antioxidative activity determined by TBARS method. Compared to the control, the inducing period associated with the oxidation degree was delayed up to 8 days in both the water extract from Chrysanthemum, Lycium chinensis Miller, Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fischer, and Paeonia lactiflora Pallas and the in ethanol extract from Chrysanthemum and Glycyrrhiz uralensis Fischer. These results support that water and ethanol extracts from 8 kinds of medicinal herbs contain antioxidative compounds.
The effect of antioxidants on the myocardial cellular damage which occurs during reoxygenation of hypoxic myocardium was examined in isolated rat hearts. The roles of oxygen free radical and lipid peroxidation in reoxygenation injury of myocardium were also investigated. In Langenorff preparation of isolated rat heart, which was made hypoxic by perfusion with the substrate free, hypoxic cardioplegic solution ($37^{\circ}C$, 90 min), the release of cytosolic enzymes (creatine phosphokinase, lactic dehydrogenase) and a lipid peroxidation product, malondialdehyde into the coronary effluent were abruptly increased by reoxygenation. The release of enzymes was closely parallel to that of MDA. These increases of enzymes and lipid peroxidation product were suppressed to various degrees in the presence of scavengers of superoxide anion (superoxide dismutase, 10,000 U), hydrogen peroxide (catalase, 25,000 U) and hydroxyl radical (dimethyl sulfoxide, 10%). A natural antioxidant, ${\alpha}-tocopherol$(4.5 uM) and a synthetic one, butylated hydroxytoluene (2 uM) suppressed the release of cytosolic enzymes with the concomittent reduction of lipid peroxidation as measured by malondialdehyde release into the coronary effluent. These effects of antioxidants were dose dependent, and were more pronounced when the antioxidants were administered throughout hypoxic and reoxygenation periods than given during reoxygenation period only. These results suggest that cytotoxic oxygen free radicals produced in the myocardium during reoxygenation may be responsible fur the myocardial cellular injury by enhancing the lipid peroxidation of cellular membranes. Furthermore, the antioxidants may exert protective effect against reoxygenation damage of hypoxic myocardium through the inhibition of lipid peroxidation reaction.
