  • This article introduces the next-generation air surveillance system and investigates how to design of front-end low noise amplifier of the ground station receiver. In consideration of the international standard documentation and the performance of existing products, the study conducts the link budget on the entire system so that it can be competitive in terms of receive sensitivity or reliability. To obtain a proper low noise amplifier, standards of design are decided so that such factors as gain, gain flatness, and reflective loss can be optimal. In its design, the bias circuit appropriate for the characteristics of low power, low noise, or high gain was built, and according to the results of the simulation conducted after the optimal design, its gain was 16.24dB, noise factor was 0.36dB, input-output reflective loss was -18dB and -28dB each, and frequency stability was 1.11. According to the results measured after the design, its gain was 17dB, noise factor was 0.51dB, gain flatness was 0.23dB, and input-output reflective loss was -18.28dB and -24.50dB each, so the results gained were suitable for building the overall system.

  • ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) recommends the introduction of SBAS (Satellite Based Augmentation System) in 2025, which provides GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) correction data and the ranging signal via GEO (geostationary earth orbit) satellites to GNSS users. In this paper, we present the basic design results of the satellite communication system RF link for the Korean SBAS systems, KASS (Korea Augmentation Satellite System) which is going on the development & implementation. KASS RF link was designed in consideration of both the C-band and Ku-band uplinks to meet the international standard requirements for the SBAS system, and identified the minimum EIRP and G/T performance of the KASS uplink station for each frequency band. These analysis results for the RF link design are expected to be used for an effective design of the subsystem specifications for KASS satellite communication system.

  • In this paper, we present the newly developed propagation toss model of a long range maritime communication channel, measured by a ground to air flight test, and discuss its validity compared with the predictive value based on the spherical earth reflection model. To measure the propagation loss, actual flight test was performed in the Yellow Sea and the measurement of receiving signal strength was made for overall test range. As far as the test condition is concerned, it is expected that the receiving signal strength must be interfered with the reflected wave by an island existing around the reflection point. Therefore we introduce some modifications on the conventional spherical earth reflection model by including the effect due to the reflected wave from the island. And then, we compare the path loss measured by flight test with that one analyzed by the spherical earth reflection model accounting for reflected wave of the island. As a result of the comparison, it is verified to predict the path loss accurately by the spherical earth reflection model including the effect due to the reflected wave from an island for a long range ground to air communication.

  • The Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) broadcasts to users integrity and correction information for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) such as GPS and GLONASS using geostationary orbit (GEO) satellites. In accordance with the recommendation of the International Civilian Aeronautical Organization (ICAO) to introduce SBAS until 2025, a Korean SBAS system development / construction project is underway with the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs. Korea Augmentation Satellite System (KASS) is a high precision GPS correction system which is composed of KASS Reference Station (KRS), KASS Processing Station (KPS), KASS Uplink Station (KUS), KASS Control Station (KCS) and GEO satellites. In this paper, we provided the conceptual design of the KASS uplink station, which is composed of the Signal Generator Section (SGS) and the Radio-Frequency Section (RFS), and interface between the KASS ground sector and the GEO satellite.

  • A Basic Plan for the Promotion of Space Development (hereinafter referred to as "basic plan"), which prescribes mid- and long-term policy objectives and basic direction-setting on space development every five years, is one of the matters to be deliberated by the National Space Committee. Confirmed February 2018 by the Committee, the 3rd Basic Plan has a unique matter, compared to the 2nd Basic Plan. It is to construct "Korean Positioning System(KPS)". Almost every country in the world including Korea has been relying on GPS. On the occasion of the shooting down of a Korean Air flight 007 by Soviet Russia, GPS Standard Positioning Service has been open to the world. Due to technical errors of GPS or conflict of interests between countries in international relations, however, the above Service can be interrupted at any time. Such cessation might bring extensive damage to the social, economic and security domains of every country. This is why some countries has been constructing an independent global or regional satellite navigation system: EU(Galileo), Russia(Glonass), India(NaVic), Japan(QZSS), and China(Beidou). So does South Korea. Once KPS is built, it is expected to make use of the system in various areas such as transportation, aviation, disaster, construction, defense, ocean, distribution, telecommunication, etc. For this, a pan-governmental governance is needed to be established. And this governance must be based on the law. Korea is richly experienced in developing and operating individually satellite itself, but it has little experience in the simultaneous development and operation of the satellites, ground, and users systems, such as KPS. Therefore we need to review overseas cases, in order to minimize trial and error. U.S. GPS is a classic example.

  • This paper suggests a test and evaluation procedure of conformal load-bearing antenna structure(CLAS) for high speed military jet application. A log periodic patch type antenna was designed for multi-band communication and navigation antenna. Carbon/Glass fiber reinforced polymer was used as a structure supporting aerodynamic loads and honeycomb layer was used to improve antenna performance. Multi-layers were stacked and cured in a hot temperature oven. Gain, VSWR and polarization pattern of CLAS were measured using anechoic chamber within 0.15~2.0 GHz frequency range. Tension, shear, fatigue and impact load test were performed to evaluate structural strength of CLAS. Antenna performance test after every structural strength test was conducted to check the effect of structural test to antenna performance. After the application of new test and evaluation procedure to validate a new CLAS, a design improvement was found.

  • As the type and purpose of drones become diverse and the number of additional functions is increasing, the role of the corresponding software has increased. Through partitioning and an efficient solving of SWaP(size, weight and power) problems, ARINC 653 can provide reliable software reuse and consolidation regarding avionic systems. ARINC 653 can be more effectively applied to drones, a small unmanned aerial vehicle, in addition to its application with large-scale aircraft. In this paper, to exploit ARINC 653 for a drone flight-control program, an intra-partition communication system is implemented through an extension of the layered ARINC 653 and applied to a real drone system. The experiment results show that the overheads of the intra-partition communication are low, while the resources that are assigned to the drone flight-control program are guaranteed through the partitioning.

  • Currently, the wireless network environment of air node is constructed mainly of ground relay station. However, as the Korean Peninsula is composed of 70% mountainous region, there are multiple shadow zones. This is calling for effective measures to prevent aircraft from losing communication link during low-mid altitude missions. In this article we propose the utilization of Bezier Curve for estimation of aircraft flight path and control method for entering shadow zone. This method successfully estimated aircraft track, and analyzed the existence, disseminated the warning, and took measures to avoid the shadow zone before entering. This article, suggested after simulated experiments, proves that the method enables seamless communication during air operations.

  • Outer Space is existing as the opening-up frontier. The space activities included benefit-and-risk are now confronted with the challenge of arriving at just and effective rules for the use of space serving many technical, practical and conflicting legal, economic, political and military interests. Therefore many governments have developed domestic and international policies to respond to the opportunities and constraints engendered by space exploration and exploitation. the challenges of outer space toward the 21st century are being internationalized, commercialized, and privatized, militarized through the international cooperation and competition in space activities. For the future of mankind, futhermore the right to live of humankind, we must be positively interested in international space law which may give rise to international repercussions. I suggeste that many issues be resolved by international coordinating organization.
