  • Objective : UMLS is 'Ontology' which establishes the database for medical terminology by gathering various medical vocabularies representing same fundamental concepts. Method : Although Chinese character are represented in the Chinese part of Korean Unicode system in a computer, writing of Chinese characters is vary depending on Chinese input systems and Chinese writers' levels of knowledge. As the result of this, representation of Chinese writing in a computer will be considerably different from an old Chinese document. Therefore, a meaningful relationship between digital Chinese terminology and translated Korean is necessary in order to build Ontology for Chinese medical terms from Oriental medical prescription in a computer system. Result : This research will present 1:1 mapping information among the Chinese characters used in the Oriental medical prescription with analysis of 'same character different sound' and 'same meaning different shape' in Chinese part of Unicode systems. Conclusions : Furthermore, the research will provide top-down menu of relationship between Chinese term and Korean term in medical prescription with assumption of that the Oriental medical prescription has its own unique meaning.

  • The present study investigates the effects of semantic transparency on the learning of new words using both behavioral measures and event-related brain potentials. Participants studied novel words with either semantically transparent or opaque definitions while their brain potentials were recorded. Learning performance was assessed with both a lexical decision task and a recall test. The results indicated that transparent novel words were easier to learn than opaque words. More specifically, self-paced learning times were shorter for transparent novel words across three study sessions. Transparent words also elicited reduced N400s compared with opaque words in all sessions. Moreover, lexical decisions to both learned novel words and real words were faster and more accurate within the transparent condition compared to the opaque condition. These results suggest that semantic transparency also plays an important role within word learning, just as within word recognition, further supporting the notion that morphological information is critical within lexical processing.

  • In this paper, the extraciton method for individual and the recognition method for the printed dociments are discussed. In preprocessing is a technique to extract characters that are difficult to manage such as touching characters or overlapped chracters.Genrally in the existing segmentation methods, projection and edge detection are applied. However,in this paper an indvidual character is extracted by using connected pixel with one projection after the string extraction The maximum Blok Methld(MBM)is used for the recognition. The MBM is a method to enlarge the block to the last point the pixel that was found during projection. The maximum blocks are skeletonxied after the division into straight line block and oblique line block.Especially,in the recognition of chinese chracters compared to the existing method it showed improved recognition rate.

  • The academic values of Joseon jiji jaryo (Geographical Documents of Joseon) are that native Korean toponyms corresponding with toponyms in Sino-Korean characters (hanzi 漢字) are abundantly recorded nationwide. Through analysing these documents, it is able to examine the linguistic features of toponymic changes while reasoning about geographical named sources and administrative districts as well as obtaining primary data. This article aims to preliminarily analyze these documents for encouraging academic studies which haven't been investigated sufficiently since they was introduced into the academic world. Noticing the toponymic values of these documents, I reexamined the bibliography and composing contents centering around the volume of Chungcheongbuk-do province in these documents. Consequently, I pointed out the possibility of regional differences of compilation times and mistakes in the contents of these documents. In addition to that, I proposed the toponymic values, referring to the transcription changes of village toponyms and the tendencies of loan transcription.

  • This paper studied on problems and improvement method of description and headings in ${\ulcorner}Korean\;MARC\;on\;Disc\lrcorner$. By Korean MARC on Disc, it seems a great mistake that in abridged and full information, give the volumes next to statement of title and author. and even input copies of them respectively in case of multi-volume books. Also, frequently the essential abridged catalog information of a homonymic authors more than 10 which are written to Chinese are enumerated under one author name in Korean, using together with only one list. It is, therefore, effective and reasonable that Korean author headings be written to Korean language at first and be followed by Chinese, and then the subject of an author and the year of birth and death of author be indecated. For that, We should make out a conventional and reasonable subject heading list in advance to maintain the unity of subject, and build a exact authority database of Korean author name according to it.

  • Among the Chinese Characters originated in Japan, some of them are very ancient in their origin and others come to exist as different forms by being used widely in forged books in Chinese. These Characters can be divided into three groups. First, the Chinese Characters whose forms are different. Most of these are 'hoiui' (회의)character, being made by imitating the forms of the original Chinese Letters. These characters do have meaning but not pronunciation. This is one distinct feature of Chinese Characters originated in Japan. Second, the Chinese Characters whose meaning has been assigned by the Japanese people. These letters can be grouped into two. One is the letters whose meanings are entirely different from original Chinese Characters, and the other is the letters whose meanings are not known although their pronunciations are known. It can be explained that the letters with different forms are made because of the ignorance of letter's existence. Or, the letters were made on purpose in ordoer to be used in different meanings. Third, the Characters with a partial modification of original Chinese Characters. Among the Characters in three groups above, pure Japanese-made Chinese Characters are those in group one and three since those in group two are Chinese Letters whose meanings (or pronunciation) only are Japanese. As a results of detailed investigation of pure Japanese-made Chinese Character in JIS X 0208-1990, the followings are discovered: 1. Pure Japanese-made Chinese Characters are 147 in numbers. 2. The Characters which were originally Chinese but now considered to be Japanese-made are 5 in numbers. Among these letters, 39 Characters are not listed in TaeHanHwaSaJon(Whose fame is well known as the authoritative dictionary of Chinese Characters), 47 Characters are not found in the dictionaries of Chinese Characters compiled in Korea. 3. 14 Characters seem to be Japanese-made Chinese Characters although it cannot be said so with accuracy because of various meanings found in several dictionaries of Chinese Characrters.

  • The Hanja used in Korean are traditional Chinese characters, but what Chinese people use now is simplified characters. So, there are differences in pronunciation and meaning between the characters used by Korean and Chinese. More than 70% of the Korean language vocabulary derived from or were influenced by hanja. For the inheritance and development of traditional culture, and for the communication among countries of the Chinese characters cultural circle in Northeast Asia, should we build up an authentic Chinese education system. But the government hasn't pay much attention to this work, and the government's policy can't implement the efficient education. Consequently, in these days, there are more and more Korean people who are functionally illiterate in Chinese. Recently, proficiency tests of Chinese characters are expected to promote the development of Chinese education. But, most Koreans' motives for Chinese study are usually to pass the college entrance exam or to compete for jobs. However, after passing the test, the motive for studying gradually fade away. It is the basic problem faced by Korean Chinese character education. Since the 1950s, various character education methods have been studied in China, the research results were appliedin their textbooks and other materials. Therefore, a well-organized and efficient learning-by-step education system was built up. At present, China's literacy education in the textbooks utilizes a range of methods including revisional centralized and distributed. Unfortunately, there is still one shortcoming worthy of concerns: how to solve the problems due to the simplification of traditional Chinese characters? Is it possible to revive traditional Chinese characters? Before adopting the results of research on China's literacy education and applying them to our character education, we should consider our specific situation carefully. Adopting the research results with cautious review and objective criticism should have a positive impact on Korean Chinese character education.

  • In this study, the use of '心' letter used in classic Chinese book of 『Hwangjenaegyeog』 and its meaning was examined. In Chinese letters, '肉' is a sign that symbolizes the body. The letters '肝', '脾', '肺', and '腎' expressing the five human organs all contain the form of '肉'. So they don't cause semantic confusion. However, the Chinese letter that means heart and mind are written as '心'. As a result, it is difficult to understand the meaning of '心'. In addition, the contents of 『Hwangjenaegyeog』 cover various fields from disease to astronomy. For this reason, a total of 286 '心' letters used in it have various meanings. The results of this study are as follows. First, it means human heart. Second, it means the human chest. Third, it refers to mind. Fourth, it means a transcendent concept like spiritual enlightenment. Fifth, it refers to pericardium. Sixth, it refers to logical thought Seventh, it means center or core, and finally does constellation. in the eastern sky of ancient Asia. The results of this study are thought to be helpful in grasping the meaning of '心' in the classical literature as well as in 『hwangjenaegyeonglyeongchu』.

  • In the most studies of Korean character recognition so far, they first classify the characters to 6 types according to their structures and then recognize the characters by identifying their basic components named $'$jaso.$'$ In the study, we propose a method which recognizes the characters without using structure types and is applied to reading documents containing both Korean and Chinese characters. We first classify Korean and Chinese characters by using a modified SOFM model. Then we recognize the characters in each class by using an APC neural network which has the advantage of fast leaning speed and the capablity of additive learning. An experimental result demonstrated the usefulness of the approach with the recognition rate of $\%.$\%.

  • The presence of voids under pavements or behind tunnel linings results in the deterioration. One method of detecting such voids by non-destructive means is radar. This research is devoted to quantitatively evaluating the efficiency of such non-destructive tests with radar. As a foundation to this ongoing research, which aims to estimate the thickness of voids using radar, an analysis method based on radar signal processing using convolution technique is carried out with various void thicknesses in embedded layer which has different electromagnetic properties. The computed results were verified by comparing the test results. As a result, a proposed method in this study has a possibilty of estimating the thickness of voids with good accuracy.
