The Effects of Role Conflicts and Burnout on Turnover Intention in Nurses of Oriental Medicine Hospitals (한방병원간호사의 역할갈등, 소진이 이직의도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to grasp the effects of role conflicts and burnout on turnover intention and provide intervention methods to decrease turnover intention in nurses of Oriental medicine hospitals. Method: The Subjects were 103 workimg Oriental Medicine Nurses. The data were analyzed by SPSS 18.0. Result: As a result, the mean scores of turnover intention, role conflicts, and burnout were 3.31, 3.53, and 3.44, respectively. Role conflicts had no significant difference in general characteristics, while burnout showed a difference in age, marriage, a working department, a night shift, and a salary, turnover intention showed a difference only in a night shift. Turnover intention was positively correlated with role conflicts(r=.310, p<.002) and burnout(r=.326, p<.001). Role conflicts and burnout explained 20.9% of turnover intention. Conclusion: Therefore, it is necessary to specify specialized and systematical nurses of roles to decrease turnover, make efforts to reduce burnout, and provide methods to decrease turnover intention in nurses of Oriental medicine hospitals.

Analysis of the Efficiency of the Oriental Hospital using the DEA(Based on the Number of Patients) (DEA를 이용한 한방병원의 경영효율성 분석: 환자수를 기준으로)

  • This study is to analyze the efficiency of oriental hospitals using DEA. The input variables are the numbers of doctors, nurses, medical technicians, and beds. The output variables are the numbers of annual inpatients and outpatients. The statistical analysis tools used are EnPas and IBM SPSS Statistics 19. The result in efficiency analysis by establishment type showed that the national and public hospitals had the most efficiency. In the case of location, the efficiency of the oriental hospitals in Seoul was the highest but those in the Metropolitan areas had a relatively low efficiency. If the number of the beds was generally less than 50 beds, the hospitals were highly efficient, but the hospitals in the medium category of 51-100 beds were low in efficiency. The Logistic regression analysis conducted to analyze the variables that have affected the efficiency of oriental hospitals resulted that the efficiency increased by 1.045 everytime the number of nurses increased by 1.

A Comparison of Compliance with Standard Precautions for Infection Prevention between Nurses at Accredited Korean Medicine Hospitals and Non-accredited Korean Medicine Hospitals (인증 한방병원과 비인증 한방병원 간호사의 감염예방 표준주의지침 수행도의 차이 비교)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare compliance with standard precautions of infection prevention between nurses at accredited Korean medicine hospitals and non-accredited Korean medicine hospitals. Methods: Data were collected from a total of 138 participants (69 nurses from 3 accredited hospitals and 69 nurses from 3 non-accredited hospitals) in January of 2021 using structured questionnaires. Descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and multiple regression analyses were carried using the SPSS Statistics 24.0 Program. Results: Results showed that the scores of nurses' compliance with standard precautions of infection prevention at accredited Korean medicine hospital (40.54±2.74) were significantly higher (p=.002) than the scores of nurses at the non-accredited Korean medicine hospitals (38.94±3.28). After controlling for covariates, the results were same. In addition, we found that scores of compliance with standard precaution for infection prevention in nurses at hospitals belong to university were significantly high compared to those of nurses at private hospitals. We also found that the scores of compliance with standard precaution for infection prevention in nurses with more than 5 years of experience were significantly higher than those of nurses with less than 3 years of experience (p=.039). Conclusion: Nurses working at the accredited Korean medicine hospitals showed higher scores of compliance with standard precaution for infection prevention. Therefore, it is suggested that the participation in the hospital accreditation program should be encouraged for the Korean medicine hospitals.

A Study on Role Conflict and Job Satisfaction in Nurses in Oriental Medicine Hospitals (한방병원 간호사의 역할갈등과 직무만족도에 관한 연구)

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify role conflict and job satisfaction in nurses in oriental medicine hospitals. Method: Study participants were 128 nurses employed in oriental medicine hospitals. The data were collected using a survey questionnaire. The instruments included a 37-item role conflict scale and 20-item job satisfaction scale. The data were analyzed using frequencies, means, percentages, t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation coefficient with the Window's SPSS program. Result: There were significant differences in job satisfaction according to marital status, motivative for being a nurse and length of work time. The mean score for role conflict was 3.69 and for job satisfaction, 2.96. Job satisfaction had a significant inverse correlation with role conflict in these nurses. Conclusion: It is suggested that further studies are needed to identify factors affecting role conflict and job satisfaction in oriental medicine nurses, which will help to identify strategies to decrease the role conflict and increase job satisfaction in nurses employed in oriental medicine hospitals.

Educational Needs and Knowledge Level of Traditional Korean Nursing among Nurses in Korean Medicine Hospitals (한방병원 간호사의 한방간호 교육요구도와 지식수준)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the educational needs and knowledge level of traditional Korean nursing among nurses in Korean medicine hospitals. Methods: A survey design was used. A total of 180 nurses working for more than six months at 10 Korean medicine participated in this study. Data were collected in September of 2019. All data were analyzed by t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé, and paired t-test using SPSS Statistics 25.0 program. Results: The six sub-areas of educational needs for traditional Korean nursing were knowledge of treatments, direct nursing care, types of acupuncture, manipulative therapy, diagnosis, and herbal medicine in order. Average score of the educational needs for nurses in Korean medicine hospitals was 3.77 points out of 5 points. All six sub-areas of the knowledge level were statistically significant. Average score of knowledge level about Korean medicine among nurses was 3.03 out of 5. Conclusion: As a result of this study, it was found that a high level of knowledge is required or Korean medicine education. Knowledge of Korean medicine should be improved through education on thetypes of acupuncture, manipulative therapy, diagnosis, and treatment with relatively low scores. The results of this study can be used as basic data for preparing an educational system to improve the knowledge level of nurses in Korean medicine hospitals.

Determinants of Patients Satisfaction and Intent to Revisit Oriental Medical Hospitals (한방병원 환자 만족도 및 재이용 의사 결정요인)

  • This study aimed to investigate the determinants of patients satisfaction and intent to revisit oriental medical hospitals. The level of overall patient satisfaction was used as an intervening variable and the level of intent to revisit was used as a dependent variable. The sample used in this study consisted of 578 patients from 3 oriental medical hospitals located in Chungnam Province. Data were collected from October 2014 to December 2014 with a structured and self-administrated questionnaire and analysed using path analysis. The results of the study indicate that oriental medical hospitals should make an effort to improve the overall satisfaction of patients, in the case of outpatient, especially focusing on the doctors' service and medical procedure, and in the case of inpatient, especially focusing on the facilities convenience, medical price and hospital ward life which will lead to high level of intent to revisit of patients.

The Relationships of Korean Medicine (KM) Nursing Knowledge, Nursing Practice and Role Conflict with Retention Intention in KM Nurses (한방병원 간호사의 한방간호지식, 한방간호업무수행과 역할갈등이 재직의도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships of Korean medicine (KM) nursing knowledge, nursing practice and role conflict with retention intention among KM nurses. Methods: The study used a survey design with a sample of 152 nurses working at Korean medicine hospitals in Kyunggi province and Seoul. The data were collected from January 15 to March 18, 2016 and were analyzed with SPSS WIN 21.0. Results: The factors that influenced on retention intention were knowledge (${\beta}=.36$, p<.001) and role conflict (${\beta}=-.18$, p=.020) of KM nursing which explained 25.3% of retention intention in KM nurses (F=6.06, p<.001). Conclusion: The findings suggest that it is necessary to develop and offer KM nursing education programs for increasing retention intention among nurses in Korean medicine hospital. It is also important to specify the roles of KM nurses for reducing role conflict.

Nurse Characteristics related to Level of Use of Essential Oriental Nursing Terms in Oriental Medicine Hospitals (한방병원 간호사들의 한방간호 필수용어 활용도와 관련된 특성)

  • Purpose: This study was done to examine the level of use of essential oriental nursing terms and related characteristics among nurses in oriental medicine (OM) hospitals. Method: A cross-sectional survey design with convenience sampling was employed. Questionnaires were used to collect data from 315 nurses in seven university-affiliated OM hospitals. The questionnaire included 174 oriental nursing terms about actions, tests, drugs, and theories. Multiple regression analysis was performed to determine factors associated with the level of use. Results: The response rate was 98.1% (n=309). Overall mean score for use of essential oriental nursing terms was 2.7(${\pm}\;0.7$) on a five-point Likert scale. Significant factors associated with the level of use were workplace and knowledge of oriental nursing theory terms. Nurses who worked in nursing care wards and those who had a higher level of knowledge of oriental nursing theories had a higher level of use. Conclusions: These findings indicate that level of use of essential oriental nursing terms were below average. Educational programs to enhance knowledge of oriental nursing theories need to be implemented for nurses in OM hospitals, considering their workplace, in order to facilitate nursing data sharing and communication among healthcare providers.

Factors Affecting Disaster Nursing Competency of Nurses at University Oriental Medicine Hospital (대학 부속 한방병원 간호사의 재난간호역량에 미치는 영향요인)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify factors affecting the disaster nursing competency of nurses at a university oriental medicine hospital. Methods: The survey was conducted on 115 nurses at a university oriental medicine hospital from December 1, 2022 to January 30, 2023. Data analysis was performed using t-test, one way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. Results: Factors affecting the disaster nursing competency of nurses at a university oriental medicine hospital were perception of disaster and working experience at an oriental medicine hospital. Conclusions: It is necessary to increase perception of disaster and provide disaster education appropriate for their profession in order to improve the disaster nursing competency of nurses at university oriental medicine hospital. In addition, organizational efforts are needed to increase the long-term disaster nursing competency of nurses at university oriental medicine hospitals.

Knowledge and Performance Level of Infection Control and Influencing Factors of Oriental Medical Doctors and Nurses in Korea (한방병원 한의사와 간호사의 감염관리에 대한 지식과 수행도 비교)

  • Purpose: This study was designed to identify knowledge and performance level of infection control among oriental medical doctors and nurses and further to identify factors that may influence practice. Methods: Data were collected using the survey method. Two hundred and forty two healthcare workers (HCW) from five oriental medicine university hospitals in Korea (140 physicians and 102 nurses) completed a survey about infection control. The study was conducted from February 1 to 28, 2011. Results: The average knowledge level of infection control among HCW was $0.75{\pm}0.13$ (score range 0~1) and the average performance level of infection control was $3.16{\pm}1.05$ (score range 0~5). 'Disinfection and sterilization' were ranked the highest in both the knowledge and performance level. In the knowledge level, 'hand washing/hand hygiene' were ranked the lowest. 'Bloodstream infection prevention' was the lowest among the infection control categories in performance. Total average knowledge and performance level of nurses was significantly higher than that of the physicians. Conclusion: This study demonstrated the oriental medical doctors and nurses' knowledge and performance level of infection control differed. The education on infection control is required to oriental medical doctors and nurses and it would contribute to preventing healthcare associated infections in oriental medicine hospitals.
