  • The biogeographical approach on the species composition, distributional range, and life form of native Korean conifers suggests that the Korean Peninsula harbors 4 families 10 genera 30 species. Early-evolved conifers maintain high species diversity and broad distribution. During the glacial periods, the ranges of cold-tolerant conifers expanded, on the other hand, those of warmth-tolerant ones reduced. Presence of endemic subalpine conifers might be the result of long-term isolation of conifers on high mountains. Horizontal and vertical ranges of native Korean conifers are classified into alpine, subalpine, montane, coastal, insular and disjunctive types, and then subdivided into twelve sub-types. Typical life form of native Korean conifers is evergreen tree, blooms in spring, and fruits ripe in autumn or following autumn. Oval and elliptical seeds with wing might be beneficial for their dispersal. Further works on the migration, dispersal, genetics, ecology of native Korean conifers are required for the better understanding of the biogeography of conifers.

  • The taxonomy of umbel genus Sium L., Apiaceae in Korea was reviewed on the basis of molecular phylogenies derived from sequences of nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions. The ITS sequence-derived phylogeny indicates that S. heterophyllum, endemic to Korea, is identical to S. tenue, which is known as endemic to Ussuri regions. Comparisons of sequence pairs across both spacer regions gave divergence values and revealed the identity between S. tenue and S. heterophyllum on Mt. Moonsoo. On the other hand, the ITS sequences support species delimitation of S. ternifolium, as reported recently as a new species that differs from other Sium species. The ITS sequence divergence values of 1.4 and 1.6% support species delimitation between S. serra and S. ternifolium.

  • Chromosome number, morphological variation and RAPD analysis were investigated to study on the speciation of Indigofera in Korea. Chromosome numbers of I. kirilowii (2n=16) and I. koreana (2n=32) are consistent with the previous reports. In this study tetraploid (2n=32) and hexaploid (2n=48) of I. grandiflora are newly observed. Indigofera grandiflora is distributed around Mt. Kaya area together with I. kirilowii and I. koreana. The former species has the larger sizes in plant height, leaves and flowers than the latter two and shows intermediate form between the two species in hairs on leaves and flowers which are one of the most important taxonomic characters in this group. In the RAPD analysis, I. grandiflora is similar to I. koreana than I. kirilowii but RAPD band patterns revealed difference between tetra- and hexaploid of the species. These results suggested that Korean endemic species of I. grandiflora (2n=16, 32, 48) might has multiple origin through polyploidization and/or hybridization between I. kirilowii (2n=16) and I. koreana (2n=32) around Mt. Kaya area where the latter two grow together.

  • Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences of nuclear ribosomal DNA were determined for 14 individuals representing eight taxa from Scopolia s. str. and related genera, Anisodus and Atropanthe. We found that the ITS sequences of Korean endemic species, S. parviflora, are significantly different from its allied species, S. japonica. This is contradictory to traditional taxonomic treatments in which those species are regarded as conspecific. S. parviflora exhibited closer relationship to S. carniolica, which is disjunctly distributed in Europe. In spite of substantially high sequence divergence between S. japonica and S. parvlflora/S. carniolica clade, morphological resemblance is evident among the species. Morphological stasis concept (retardation of morphological differentiation or evolution of similar characters among the disjuncts in a similar ecological habitat) was referred to understand this rather unusual evolutionary feature. S. lutescens, another Korean endemic species, shared almost identical ITS sequences with S. parviflora. Lack of diagnostic character distinguishing the taxa suggests that they are conspecific. Anisodus carniolicoides, which was originally described in Scopolia, was grouped with A. luridus and A. tanguticus. The monophyletic Anisodus formed a sister group relationship with a monotypic genus Atropanthe.

  • Despite of ecological and landscape importances and public popularity of Pinaceae, not much scientific informations are known about Korean Pinaceae. Present work aims to understand the biogeography of Korean native Pinaceae, i.e., taxonomy, phylogeny, origin, life form, distribution, dispersal and migration. Korean native Pinaceae consists of five genera and sixteen species. Pinus is systematically closely related to Picea and Larix, but Abies is related to Tsuga. Boreal conifers which have migrated from NE Asia during the Pleistocene glacial epochs successfully survived, but now confined to the alpine and subalpine belts of the Korean Peninsula mainly due to climate warming since the Holocene. Species, such as Picea pungsanensis and Abies koreana have gradually adapted to local environment, and later became an endemic species of Korea. Disjunctive distribution of Pinus parviflora and Tsuga sieboldii are also indicatives of climate change of the Pleistocene. Major dispersal agent of pine trees with winged seed is wind, but wingless pine tree seeds seem to dispersed by birds and rodents. Pine trees with bigger wings are easily dispersed by wind, and now show broader distribution. Species of Pinaceae with disjunctive distribution on the alpine and subalpine belts of both North and South Korea seems to be more vulnerable to global warming.
