  • This study explored the effects of year-long plant observation activities as a strategy for classroom management on third-grade elementary school students. To examine the effects of the activities, plant observations were described according to the time of sequence and the observation types and students' epistemic emotions were analyzed. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, steady plant observation activities caused meaningful changes in the students' observation types. Second, it induced the students' active participation with positive emotions. That is, the plant observation activities allowed the students to observe using various senses, raised their interest and curiosity, and thus resulted in satisfactory learning experiences while having fun during participation.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine variables affecting the occupational aspiration of elementary school students and the relationship of the variables in a bid to acquire empirical information on influential factors for the development of children's occupational aspiration. Out of the personal characteristics of school children, academic achievement, self-esteem and parental educational level that respectively belonged to the cognitive, affective and environmental domains were selected as the variables that might affect occupational aspiration. And the relationship of the variables to the level of occupational aspiration was selected as a research question of the study. The findings of the study were as follows: in relation to the level of occupational aspiration by gender, the girls were ahead of the boys. There were no statistically significant gaps in that aspect according to grade. And, the academic achievement of the elementary school students had a positive correlation to the level of their occupational aspiration, and there was no statistically significant relationship between self-esteem and the level of occupational aspiration. When academic achievement and self-esteem were selected as predictors, the two variables made a 8.5% prediction of the occupational aspiration of the fourth graders, and made a 12.3% prediction of the occupational aspiration of the sixth graders. There were no statistically significant differences in the level of occupational aspiration according to parental educational level. The fourth and sixth graders were found to have an occupational aspiration in consideration of not only the characteristics of occupations but their own academic achievement, namely their abilities.

  • In this study, elementary students' science communication competence was investigated based on the grammatical features expressed in their language-use in classroom discourse and science writings. The classes were designed to integrate the evidence-based reasoning framework and traditional learning cycle and were conducted on fifth graders in an elementary school. Eight elementary students' discourse data and writings were analyzed using lexico-grammatical resource analysis, which examined the discourse text's content and logical relations. The results revealed that the student language used in analyzing data, interpreting evidence, or constructing explanations did not precisely conform to the grammatical features in science language use. However, they provided examples of grammatical metaphors by nominalizing observed events in the classroom discourses and those of causal relations in their writings. Thus, elementary students can use science language grammatically from science language-use experiences through listening to a teacher's instructional discourses or recognizing the grammatical structures of science texts in workbooks. The opportunities in which elementary students experience the language-use model in science learning need to be offered to understand the appropriate language use in the epistemic context of evidence-based reasoning and learn literacy skills in science.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of group art therapy on the aggression and emotional regulation ability of elementary school students over-immersed in Internet games. The subjects include 16 elementary school children from H Local Children's Center in S City and G Local Children's Center in Y City. They were allocated to the experiment and control group each of which consisted of eight. Total 12 sessions of Group art therapy were administered to the experiment group twice per week from January 4 to February 15, 2016. Employed in the study were the Internet game addiction, aggression, and emotional regulation inventories. Collected data were treated with repeated measures ANOVA for differences according to the implementation time and group. The findings show that group art therapy had positive effects for mitigating the aggression of elementary school students over-immersed in Internet games and increasing their emotional regulation ability and that those effects lasted. Those findings indicate that group art therapy is effective for alleviating the aggression of elementary school children over-immersed in Internet games and improving their emotional regulation ability. Finally, based on the reuslt of this study, the development and future direction of this program for prevention and treatment of elementary school students over-immersed in Internet games is suggested.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a survey tool of scientific character for elementary student which connects science education and character education effectively by figuring out traits of elementary students' character being presented in teaching and learning context of elementary school science. For this, we adapted the theocratical model from the previous research which defined scientific character as the competencies being able to practice in concrete teaching and learning context of science. Based on this model, we developed the survey tool as 'Scientific Character Inventory for Elementary Student' to assess elementary students' scientific character as the competences to practice the virtues being pursued in the context of elementary school science and verified its reliability and validity. As a result of an exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, we confirmed all the items could be summarized into 28 items and eight constructs such as scientific problem-solving, self-management, self-reflection, communication, interpersonal skill, community participation, global citizenship, and environmental ethics awareness. We found that minimum reliability coefficient of constructs was over than 0.5 and reliability coefficient of the total items was 0.878. And also, there was modest relationship between each construct and the total score of scientific character. These results show that the developed survey tool can be useful in evaluating the effectiveness of science character education. This study is meaningful in that it systematically reveals constructs of scientific character which can be raised in concrete context of science teaching and learning so as to suggest the survey tool to assess this.

  • In this study, elementary school students' views about nature were searched. The participants were 18 students of fifth grade and sixth grade. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews involving a set of elicitation devices used to encourage students to talk about their views about nature, The results showed as follows; (1) Elementary school students had diverse views and common views about nature, (2) Their views about nature were affected by various factors, such as religion, aesthetical aspect, science, society, and so on. So when science educators construct science curriculum, they must consider these factors. (3) It is necessary to be concerned about the relations between science curriculum and others.

  • The study aimed to examine the longitudinal relationship between addictive use of mobile phones and learning activities for elementary school students and to analyze (1)temporal changes of the addictive use of mobile phones and learning activities, (2)temporal relationship between them, and (3)multiple and complex group analysis across gender on the relationship. For the study, 3-year longitudinal data(2010-2012) of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey and autoregressive cross-lagged modeling were used. The findings showed that the addictive use of mobile phones and learning activities had a significant positive effect on the future selves of children over time. The addictive use of mobile phones influenced positively subsequent learning activities, but, the learning activities did not affect the addictive use of mobile phones. Further, there were no significant gender differences in the longitudinal relationship. The study provided the useful data to make guidelines on how to protect mobile phone addiction for elementary school students.

  • This study was to examine the effectiveness of the Solution Focused Group Counseling Program for elementary school students by meta-analysis. For the purpose of the study, master's theses, doctoral dissertations, and journal articles published in Korea up to May, 2014 were systematically reviewed. As a result, a total of 20 studies were eligible for the inclusion criteria. The mean effect sizes and test for homogeneity of effect size (Q-statistic) were analyzed by using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software 2.0. The main findings of the study were as follows: First, the average effect sizes for Solution Focused Group Counseling Program were ES=1.61 in self-esteem, ES=1.35 in school adjustment capacity, ES=1.07 in interpersonal relationship and ES=1.03 in self-efficacy, Second, the statistically significant moderate variables of the effect size for the Solution Focused Group Counseling Program were 'sessions' of self-esteem and 'sessions', 'running times' in school adjustment capacity. Based on the study results, the research and practice implications were discussed.
