  • Volume survey for earthwork is conducted periodically at every month at large scaled construction sites for request payment for the construction. Currently, the earthwork volume is calculated on the overlapped drawing for two cross sections which were created by new and previous surveying data observed by GPS and TS. However the survey is required lots of time and expenses as it is a pin-point surveying method thus surveyors intend to get data only for the heavy undulated topographic features chosen by himself to save time and expenses. Consequently, it causes poor results due to low dense measurement as well as it's not matched with the results by another surveyors. As a result, the conflicts related in earthwork volume calculation often arises among the owner, contractors and sub contractors. In this study, we developed a method to get surveying data for fast and accurate volume calculation using 3D Mobile Laser System and conducted an application test. Also we carried out experiments for topographic survey using MLS to judge for the application additionally. The results showed that we could reduce a time for cross section survey from 48 hours to 2 hours and collected high dense data which have 0.2m interval instead of 3m interval compare with existing method. Also we could make a map which has high accuracy within 10cm in horizontal through topographic survey using MLS.

  • Recently demand for the 3D modeling technology to reconstruct real world is getting increasing. However, existing geospatial data are mainly based on the 2D space. In addition, most of the geospatial data provide geometric information only. In consequence, there are limits in various applications to utilize information from those data and to reconstruct the real world in 3D space. Therefore, it is required to develop efficient 3D mapping methodology and data for- mat to establish geospatial database. Especially digital elevation model(DEM) is one of the essential geospatial data, however, DEM provides only spatially distributed 3D coordinates of the natural and artificial surfaces. Moreover, most of DEMs are generated without considering terrain properties such as surface roughness, terrain type, spatial resolution, feature and so on. This paper suggests adaptive and flexible geospatial data format that has possibility to include various information such as terrain characteristics, multiple resolutions, interpolation methods, break line information, model keypoints, and other physical property. The study area was categorized into mountainous area, gently rolling area, and flat area by taking the terrain characteristics into account with respect to terrain roughness. Different resolutions and interpolation methods were applied to each area. Finally, a 3D digital map derived from aerial photographs was integrated with the geospatial data and visualized.

  • As heavy rains occur more frequently due to the recent climate change, slope collapses are increasing, and damage to human life and properties is accordingly increasing every year. The most proper method to take preventive measures against slope collapses is to remove the cause after understanding the cause of slope collapse in advance, and for such, slope safety inspection is implemented for preventive purposes, to investigate the cause, and as a measure for restoration. Thus, this Research was able to reach the following conclusion after utilizing LiDAR, which obtains detailed topographic information in a short period of time with point cloud data on slopes subject to safety inspection. First, as a result of analyzing the errors after installing a check point in the subject area, the RMSE of the horizontal location error appeared to be ${\pm}2.2cm$ and the RMSE of the vertical location error appeared to be ${\pm}3.0cm$, which shows a practically satisfactory result. Second, the economic feasibility was outstanding and obtaining accurate topographic information was available. Third, an area once scanned allowed to accurately obtain an unprescribed cross-sectional diagram in a short period of time, thus, appeared to be convenient for experts to detect dangerous sections.

  • In this study, the problems were analyzed that derived a different position evaluation results depending on the unit grid size that are applied to the terrain slope analysis conducted to assess the its position and environmental impacts in the prior environment reviewing process of golf course construction projects. For this purpose, the unit grid size were analyzed that can precisely reflect a actual terrain by analyzing the change of a slope percentage according to the change of unit grid size about 12 golf courses is currently in progress of construction work through the environmental consultation or ongoing consultation. And the consultation availability of environmental assessment was reverified by applying the unit grid size derived through this study about a study golf course. In the result of study, the bigger grid size for slope analysis is set, the greatly gradient is changed and the slope ratio of the higher elevation was lowly evaluated in comparison with actual terrain. The analytical result that most closely match the actual terrain was extracted in the case applied $5m{\times}5m$ of the unit grid sizes setting in this study. So, we proposed this study results to the ministry of environment and could be amended the unit grid size of $5m{\times}5m$ as standard for the analysis of slope. Also, if new grid size for site evaluation is applied to the study sites, 4 sites exceed the standard suggested the existing regulations and they are not proper as golf course site in flank of environment.

  • This paper introduces a method which can be effectively used for the path planning of UAV in a realistic map which has mountainous terrains, air defense networks and radars based on the Visibility Graph. Existing studies of Visibility Graph have been studied mainly for simple shape obstacles in 2-dimensional environment such as self-driving cars which avoid buildings. However, for UAV, Visibility Graph must be used in 3-dimensional environment for the variance of altitude. This occurs significant elapsed time increase because of the increase of the amount of the visibility of node sets. To solve this problem, this paper decrease the number of nodes which consists the complex terrain environments using convex hull based on Layered Visibility Graph. With convex hull method, this paper confirmed that the elapsed time is decreased about 99.5% compared to the case which has no decrease of the number of nodes.

  • This study was performed to provide fundamental data for long-term geomorphic predictions of estuarine sandbars in the Nakdong River. We monitored the geomorphic changes of Jinudo (Jinu Island), which is located on the far-southern side of the first western sandbar. We evaluated the temporal and spatial dynamics of the sandbar and the relationship between erosion and deposit speed with environmental factors. We found that: 1) The south side of Jinudo showed very rapid water channel closing and shoal generation. This phenomenon was more obvious during autumn (September and October) than during spring, with greater water depth reduction and variation between sides. 2) The mean deposit speed for Jinudo was approximately 0.85 mm/day. The deposit speed was 1.32 and 1.26 mm/day for the east and south sides of Jinudo, respectively. The maximum deposit and erosion speeds were 27 mm/day and 26 mm/day in July and December, respectively, on the east side of the island. 3) Mean surface deposit size was 0.18-0.26 mm. The newly deposited sandbar had a rotatively larger deposit size than the original land. 4) Correlation analysis showed that, on the southern side of the island, deposit activity prevailed in the winter due to low precipitation and a northerly wind, while erosion was dominant in the summer due to high water flow and a southerly wind. In contrast, the correlation analysis for the eastern side of the island showed that deposition is dominant when water flow is high. These results indicate that geomorphic dynamics vary among island sides.

  • A river boundary is defined as the intersection between a main stream of a river and the land. Mapping of the river boundary is important for the protection of the properties in river areas, the prevention of flooding and the monitoring of the topographic changes in river areas. However, the utilization of the ground surveying technologies is not efficient for the mapping of the river boundary due to the irregular surfaces of river zones and the dynamic changes of water level of a river stream. Recently, the spatial information data sets such as the airborne LiDAR and aerial images are widely used for coastal mapping due to the acquisition of the topographic information without human accessibility. Due to these advantages, this research proposes a semi-automatic method for mapping of the river boundary using the spatial information data set such as the airborne LiDAR and the aerial photographs. Multiple image processing technologies such as the image segmentation algorithm and the edge detection algorithm are applied for the generation of the 3D river boundary using the aerial photographs and airborne topographic LiDAR data. Check points determined by the experienced expert are used for the measurement of the horizontal and vertical accuracy of the generated 3D river boundary. Statistical results show that the generated river boundary has a high accuracy in horizontal and vertical direction.

  • The purpose of this paper is to provide useful knowledge for recreation management in natural park(NP) by evaluating use suitability of recreation resource. We had obtained data through a questionnaire, which surveyed 385 visitors at 6 of the 73 NP in Korea in 2001, based on stratified sampling method. We have analyzed the data using the multiple regression method. We found that 1) in bivariate analysis, the relationships between use suitability and all the recreation resources are fairly high and statistically significant. The higher the degree of recreation resources, the higher the degree of use suitability. 2) in multivariate analysis, topography, social resource(SR), cultural resource(CR), landscape, smell, color and sound(SCS) have been turned out to be statistically significant at one percent level. 3) the direction of relationship between topography, SR, CR, landscape, SCS and use suitability is same. 4) in relative contribution of the use suitability of recreation resource, level of topography has been turned out to have about 1.05, 1.56, 2.16 and 2.70 times more important than that of SCS, SR, landscape, topography, respectively This results will be used for a criterion for recreation resource evaluation and a settlement of management priority and increasing user's satisfaction.

  • The construction of road tunnels and bridges have delivered driving efficiency and stability based on developed engineering technology. Tunnels have the advantage of reducing the deforested area compared with other road construction methods. Since a tunnel is an underground passageway dug through the surrounding soil/earth/rock and enclosed except for the entrance and exit, commonly at each end, it does not cause a large amount of deforestation. This study surveyed the deforested areas at each end of the tunnel by the design of the tunnel entrance and exit and forest topography to minimize the amount of deforestation caused by road construction. A survey was done on a total of 150 tunnels (300 entrances and exits) on several main roads in Korea. The deforested area of each tunnel was collected by a breakdown of the entrance area and the upper area of the tunnel. According to the results of Kruskal-Wallis analysis, it was found that there was statistically a significant relation between the location of tunnels and the amount of deforestation by the topographical access type of the tunnels. The tunnel with 'facing orthogonal to incline' type access caused the smallest deforestation while the the tunnel with 'facing to valley' and 'parallel with incline' type accesses caused large deforestation during tunnel construction. Tunnel positioning in the light of topography can reduce the deforested area by up to 1.5ha at each tunnel.

  • Development of computer and electronic technology leads innovative progress in spatial informatics and successful commercialization. Geospatial information technology plays an important role in decision making in various applications. However, information display media are two-dimensional plane that limits visual perception. Understanding human visual processing mechanism to percept stereo vision makes possible to implement three-dimensional stereo image display. This paper proposes on-the-fly stereo image generation methods that are involved with various exterior and camera parameters including exposure station, viewing direction, image size, overlap and focal length. Collinearity equations and parameters related with stereo viewing conditions were solved to generate realisitc stereo imagery. In addition stereo flying simulation scenery was generated with different viewing locations and directions. The stereo viewing is based on the parallax principle of two veiwing locations. This study implemented anaglyphic stereogram, polarization and lenticular stereo display methods. Existing display technology has limitation to provide visual information of three-dimensional and dynamic nature of the real world because the 3D spatial information is projected into 2D plane. Therefore, stereo display methods developed in this study improves geospatial information and applications of GIS by realistic stereo visualization.
