  • Terrain Following means that a mobile object, such a user's avatar, must follow terrain, remaining in contact with the ground at all times in virtual environments. This makes a virtual environment have the effects of gravity. Terrain Following is often done using collision detection: however this is inefficient, because general collision detection solves a problem that is inherently more complex than merely determining terrain contact points. Many virtual environments avoid the expense by utilizing a flat terrain with a constant altitude everywhere. This makes a terrain following trivial, but lacks realism. This paper provides as algorithm and a data structure for a terrain following using a neighboring area search as a way to search neighboring polygons. Because this algorithm uses a pre-processing step that stores the terrain polygons for calculating, it results in reducing overheads to workstations that is used to construct and maintain a virtual environment. Consequently, workstation can be used to apply not only a terrain following but also other things.

  • The Purpose of this study is to find out necessity and possibility of low-rise high density housing improving an old residential district of hillside areas. Housing of hillside areas should be maintained and it is necessary to make topographical adaptation plan. For this purpose, we calculate the floor area ratio to break even on case study area by GIS date. As a result, we found out that floor area ratio as minimum qualifications for the feasibility of urban redevelopment is 180%, and carried out a landscape simulation to a low-rise high density housing by AutoCAD 2004 and ArcView 3.2a. In results of simulations, it reveals that a rule to low-rise high density housing effective for topographical adaptation development.

  • The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on-board the NASA's Terra spacecraft provides along-track digital stereo image data at 15m resolution with a base-height ratio 0.6. Automated stereocorrelation procedure was implemented using the ENVI 4.1 software to derive DEMs with $15m{\times}15m$ in 43km long and 50km wide area using the ASTER stereo images. The accuracy of DEMs was analyzed in comparison with those which were obtained from digital topographic maps of 1:25,000 scale. Results indicate that RMSE in elevation between ${\pm}7$ and ${\pm}20m$ could be achieved. Excluding cloud, water and building areas as the factors which make RMSE value exceeding 10m, the accuracy of DEMs showed RMSE of ${\pm}5.789m$. Therefore for the purpose of elevating accuracy of topographic information, we intended to detect the cloud areas and shadow areas by a landcover classification method, remove those areas on the ASTER DEM and then replace with those areas detached from the cartographic DEM by band math.

  • Because satellite images include geometry distortions according to photographing conditions and sensor property, and their spatial and radiational resolution and spectrum resolution are different, it is so difficult to make a precise results of analysis. For comparing more than two images, the precise geometric corrections should be preceded because it necessary to eliminate systematic errors due to basic sensor information difference and non-systematic errors due to topographical undulations. In this study, we did sensor modeling using satellite sensor information to make a basic map of change detection for artificial topography. We eliminated the systematic errors which can be occurred in photographing conditions using GCP and DEM data. The Kompsat EOC images relief could be reduced by precise rectification method. Classifying images which was used for change detections by city and forest zone, the accuracy of the matching results are increased by 10% and the positioning accuracies also increased. The result of change detection using basic map could be used for basic data fur GIS application and topographical renovation.

  • Recent reports about Mt. Baekdusan indicate an increasing potential of lahar generation due to volcanic activity around Lake Cheonji. In this study, we model lahar assuming volcanic activity underneath the caldera located at the top of Mt. Baekdusan. Lahar-inundation hazard zones (LAHARZ), software that runs within a Geographic Information System (GIS), was used for lahar modeling in various conditions of digital terrain resolution and model parameters. The sensitivity analysis of model parameters shows that both sink threshold and terrain resolution have limited impact on the modeling result. Combinations of stream threshold and resolution indicate distinctive distributions in stream delineation. The limitations of LAHARZ seem to largely be associated with the assumption of an existing flow generation algorithm. However, the impact of different resolutions on the final lahar extent was found to be small.

  • Gravity characteristics are investigated in the vicinity of the DASAN scientific station, located at the Svalbard Archipelago, the Arctic using ArcGP data. Boundary effects of free-air gravity anomalies, which appeared generally at the continental margin, are erased after Bouguer correction was applied. Complete Bouguer anomalies produced after terrain correction by GrOPO30 show that gravity anomalies increase from continent to marine. This phenomena seem to be related to the rise of Moho discontinuity. The cut-off frequency of 0.16 was decided after power spectrum analysis and the gravity anomalies were divided into two parts. Residual anomalies in high frequency part show that characteristics of high values along the faults and of low values related to thick sediments in the continent. Characteristic is low values from basement subsidence of continental slope or thick sediments in the marine. The undulation of Moho discontinuity from 3-D inversion modeling show typical characteristics of continental margin that become higher from Svalbard archipelago to Knipovich ridge bordering Eurasian plate.

  • For the design of a large-scale landfill, the future utilization plan of the landfill ought to precede based on the analysis of existing facility. Analysis for the present condition of reclamation must include accurate assesment of volume and other consideration such as urban scenery. In this study an optimum data interpolation scheme area/volume determination method based on the classification of topography were combined for the correct assessment of sweeping volume. Combined model was compared with the real data of Digital Elevation Model constructed by aero photography. The new model aims at providing basic information for the design and utilization of a new landfill. A a result of this study, we made an algorithm to perform the classification of the topography in the area of interest objectively. In addition, we decided optimal data interpolation scheme and area/volume calculation method for given topography. Finally, we applied the developed methodology to Nangido Landfill to assess current landfill situation and potential capacity when landfilling is resumed.

  • In the digital mapping for data base contruction, the positional information is used as an important tool in LIS/GIS(Land Information System/Geographic Information System) that is used for a facility management, urban/cadastral management as well as in spatial analysis. In this paper, for an error analysis of X, Y coordinates data on digital map, test area was classified by topography, density, and slope. The coordinates on topographic map were assumed as true values and they were compared with the coordinates on digital map. A result of the numerical test show that a vector data of line type had more gross error than vector data of polygon type. And, SME(stanadrd mean error) of urban or intermountain area had small values compared to that of suburban area in topography analysis. The SME of dense and middle zone had small values compared to that of loose zone in density analysis. In another slope analysis. the SME of steep of gentle slope had small values compared to that of flatland.

  • Executing various constructions and national land planning, it has rised importance how to acquire 3-dimensional geographical information efficiently. In conjunction with this, the concerned parties are interested in the accuracy of GPS positioning and applications. This study suggest the efficiency and possibility to apply geographical information construction by kinematic GPS surveying as comparing kinematic GPS results with triangulation, trilateration and static GPS results. In this study, we try to compare static with kinematic and can determine 3-D positions with difference of 6 mm in distance, 2"/10,000-4"/10,000, 20 cm in latitude, longitude and height at local area. In addition, difference from conventional surveying is about 1"/l0,000-3"/10,000 in horizontal. Therefore it is expected to apply kinematic GPS to make out topographic map and to construct data base associated with GIS.associated with GIS.

  • In this study, we investigated the landslides area which occurred in Umyeonsan in 2011 and collected landslide location data. Using this field data with aerial photos and LiDAR data which is obtained before and after disaster event, we analyzed the landslide occurrence frequency per unit area about various topographic characteristics. In case of slope, we compared two kind of slopes which are calculated with Neighborhood algorithm and maximum slope algorithm. Also we used aspect, elevation, profile curvature and planform curvature in topographic analysis of landslide occurrence locations. As a result, the region of which maximum slope is $40^{\circ}-45^{\circ}$ is relatively hazardous in landslide. If the perpendicular surface to the direction of the maximum slope is concave, it is more hazardous than other case.
