  • This study analyzes altitude changes of riverbed at 6 bridges in the upper and lower reaches of Yeongju Dam in Naeseong River, from 2009 to 2016 just before and after the dam construction. For 5 years from November 2010 to December 2015 when the dam was under construction, approximately 0.091m of the riverbed altitude in average more than twice before the dam construction was lowered, because of the effects of riverbed excavation for riverside maintenance in the upper reaches and transport limitation of flow and sediment by the dam in the lower reaches. Between November 2009 and December 2016 when the dam was in pre-construction and post-construction stages, respectively, the most sites in this study in the upper and lower reaches showed lowering in the riverbed altitudes. On the other hand, the riverbed around Hoeryongpo closed to the river mouth seems to be influenced by channel changes in Nakdong River rather than by the dam construction.

  • This study statistically investigates relationships between physical properties of rocks and topography by measuring and analyzing section, topographical and measured parameters of 58 bedrock outcrops at areas covered by gneiss, schist, granite, andesite, sandstone and limestone in the Korean Peninsula. Multiple linear regression analysis suggests that the joint spacing, joint continuity, weathering grade and maximum joint width of rocks among the measured parameters are related to the topographical parameters with statistical significances. Therefore, this study suggests that rock properties such as joint spacing, joint continuity, weathering grade and maximum joint width seem to greatly influence topography, although various factors can affect topographical parameters.

  • This study estimates relationships between physical and chemical weathering indices of various rock types and topographical relief. Physical weathering properties such as rock strength and joint and chemical weathering indices such as the $SiO_2/Al2O_3$, CIA and WPI were analyzed from 18 rock outcrops in mountain and valley areas consisting of 9 rock types. The results indicate that the elevation and relief of topography increase physical strength of rock increases. It can be suggested that the total r(rock-mass strength rating) and R(rock rebound strength by Schmidt Hammer) are most useful indices as a quantitative weathering property factor to explain formative causes of topographical relief. The results also suggest that rock types such as sandstone, granite, gneiss and schist are most suitable to explain meaningful difference in topographical relief with the physical and chemical weathering indices.

  • Coastal dunes play an important role in coastal defense. The Moraeul dune in Daecheongdo Island is representative in this regard. However, there is little knowledge, concerning the morphology, grain size, and formation timing of the dune. This study investigated the geomorphological characteristics of the Moraeul dune using topographic surveys, grain size analyses, and OSL dating. The dune was classified as 'single accreted foredune', which was developed under dense vegetation cover and efficient sand trapping. The dune consisted of fine to medium sand with 1.6Φ of mean grain size, and was covered with pine trees (> 100 years old). The samples from the upper part of the dune yielded quartz OSL ages ranging 0.5 ~ 0.7 ka. Therefore, it is likely that the dune developed at least before the Little Ice Age and became what it is today about one century ago.

  • Gaemok, the place name of Uihang-ri, Sowon-myeon, Taean-gun, Chungnam, indicates a tombolo. This study estimated the Holocene sea level change and development process of the coastal landforms of the Gaemok and Hwanyeong Tombolos in the Uihang coast. The tombolos seemed to form at approximately 3.4 ka and the average sea level at that time was estimated to be higher than that of the present by ca. 1 m. The Gaemok area was a separated island from the Taean peninsula during the Holocene Climatic Optimum. At approximately 3.4 ka when the sea level rose again after the fall, the Gaemok area was tied to the land by formation of the Gaemok and Hwanyeong Tombolos. The falling or fluctuating sea levels after 3.4 ka have shaped the present coastal landforms.

  • Place names or toponyms including Gosan, Busan and Buraesan can be very important and interesting storytelling subjects in terms of geomorphology and folklore studies also. Several studies done by folklorists, those sixty five mountain-moving stories with similar names can be grouped into several categories through formation processes and origin, transport media and imposition of tax. Geomorphological studies can focus on transport media. They can be classified into six different categories; 1) flood from upstream through river, 2) voluntary walk of mountains, 3) by wind, 4) upwelling from underground, 5) involvement of mythical beings such as Mago Granny or Dokkaebi (kind of goblin), or 6) migration by ocean current.

  • Numerical analysis was conducted using Delft3D developed by Deltares in Netherlands to predict long-term river bed changes in Saemangeum Area. Tidal flow, discharge through the drainage gates and river bed changes in numerical model was verified by comparing to the results of field observation and hydraulic experiments. We calculated long-term river bed changes in Saemangeum area for 10 years from 2031 to 2040 after completion of development in Saemangeum. It is shown that 70 cm and 139 cm of accumulation occur in estuaries of Dongjin River and Mankyong River, respectively. Variation of flood level was also investigated considering long-term river bed changes. There was no change in estuary of Dongjin River but maximum flood level in estuary of Mankyong River increased 81 cm.

  • Efforts for reducing greenhouse gas emission coping with climate change have also been performed in the field of water and wastewater works. In particular, the technical development for reducing energy has been applied in operating water distribution system. The reduction of energy in water distribution system can be achieved by reducing structural loss induced by topographic variation and operational loss induced by leakage and friction. However, both analytical and numerical approaches for analyzing energy budget of water distribution system has been challengeable because energy components are affected by the complex interaction of affecting factors. This research drew mathematical equations for 5 types of state (hypothetical, ideal, leak-included ideal, leak-excluded real, and real), which depend on the assumptions of topographic variation, leakage, and friction. Furthermore, the derived equations are schematically illustrated and applied into simple water network. The suggested method makes water utilities quantify, classify, and evaluate the energy of water distribution system.
