  • In order to understand the taxonomic and ecologic characteristics on ciliates plankton, surface water samples were collected once a weekly from March 2001 to December 2001 except once a monthly from December 2001 to January 2001 and twice a monttdy at February 2001 at Pal'tang reservoir in Korea. Totally 12 species belonging to 10 genera in 7 families of 6 order, were identified and all species new record in Korea. All of them had been recorded in eutrophic water bodies. Succession of dominant species occurred obviously according to seasonality. Large -sized Codonella cratera, Rimostrombidium lacustris, Strobilidium caudatum, Limnostrombidium viride, Pelagostrombidium fallax, Stylonychia sp., Pseudostrombidium plaktonticum and Phascolodon vorticella dominated during the period of outbreak of nanophytoplankton in winter to spring. However, small-sized Rimostrombidium hyalinum, rimostrombidium brachykinetum, Halteria gradinella and Vorticella convallaria occurred when the bacteria abundance increased in summer to autumn.

  • Continuous taxonomic study on shrimps collected from Korean waters revealed that an alpheid shrimp, Alpheus albatrossae occurs in Korean waters. This species belongs to the macrocheles group of the genus Alpheus. This species is distinguished from other known species of the genus Alpheus in Korea by having orbital teeth and palm of large chela with three heavy longitudinal ridges and grooves terminating distally in (1) a heavy tooth above dactylar articulation, (2) the adhesive plaque, and (3) a heavy tooth below dactylar articulation. Korean Alpheidae fauna now consists of 21 species of seven genera.

  • A taxonomic review of the genus Leiognathus was made based on specimens collected from the coast of Korea from 1997 to 2004. The genus Leiognathus in Korea includes 6 species: Leiognathus elongatus, L. fasciatus, L. lineolatus, L. nuchalis, L. rivulatus, and L. bindus. Leiognathus bindus is reported for the first time in Korea. It is characterized by having bright orange spots between the 2nd and 5th spines of the dorsal fin. Detailed morphological measurements and counts and a key to species of Leiognathus from Korea are provided.

  • We found an unrecorded species, Carex molestiformis Reznicek & Rothrock, in Byeokparyeong, Daehwa-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do, South Korea. This species is native to southern parts of the United States (ca. 11 states, including Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma). These plants are usually distributed densely in stream flood plains, bottomlands, stream banks, and along roadsides. Belonging to section Ovales Kunth, perennial herbs with gynecandrous spikes, C. molestiformis is closely related to C. maackii Maxim. and C. scoparia Willd. and is distinguished from them by the number (2-4) of spikes in each inflorescence and the width (2.63.4 mm) and number (69) of veins of perigynia. A new Korean name of C. molestiformis 'Ga-Neun-Ta-Rae-Sa-Cho' was given, as it has slender overall appearance compared with C. maackii (Ta-Rae-Sa-Cho). We also provide a description, illustrations, photographs and a key of related taxa in Korea. We compared three DNA barcode region (chloroplast DNA matK, ndhF and nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer) sequences from C. molestiformis with those of C. maackii and C. scoparia, determining eight species-specific single nucleotide polymorphism sites for C. molestiformis.

  • A taxonomic study on the marine sponges was conducted with material collected by SCUBA diving from Ulleungdo Island, Korea during July 2001 to August 2003. They were identified 19 species belonging to 14 genera in 12 families of six orders in two classes identified. Among them, Haliclona (Reniera) permollisimilis Hoshino, 1981 is newly recorded to the Korean fauna and Geodia ulleungensis n. sp. is new to science.

  • The rotifers inhabiting several lowland swamps in Kyngsangnam-do were taxonomically investigated. Collectings were carried out four times at 10 sites in such lowland swamps as Up, Chunam-ji , Chilnal-np and Oisong-np from 22 February 1988 to 2 October 1988. As a result, 4 spcies, 9 subspecies, 2 varieties and 2 forms of monogonont rotifiers in 5 families were identified, of which following 3 species and 3 subspecies are new to Korea ; Testudinella mucronata hauerensis, Platyias quadricornis , Mytilina acanthophora, Lecane ungulata ungulata. Trichocerca bicristata bicristata, and Dicranophorus epicharis.

  • A taxonomical examination of water mites collected at 2 localities in Chindo Island resulted in that they were composed of the following 7 species in 6 families and 6 genera: Hydrodroma despiciens despiciens (Miiller), Sperchonopsis verrucosa verrucosa (Protz), Torrenticola (Torrenticola) nipponica (Enami), Hygrobates (Hygrobates) longipalpis (Hermann), Unionicola (Unionicola) crassipes minor (Soar), Aturus glaberus Kim and Chung, and Bharatalbia (Japonalbia) ibarakiensis Imamura. Of these 4 taxa, Hydrodroma despiciens despiciens, Torrenticola nipponica, Hygrobates longipalpis, and Bharatalbia ibarakiensis were reported for the first time from Korea. A discussion about some facts deduced from the species composition and their distributions was also made.

  • To clarify the ants fauna in 10 islands, Chollanam-do, field survery was carried out from 1986 to 1991. As a result, 740 colonies were collected in 31 survey areas. These colonies were composed on 54 species belonging to the 30 genera of 4 subfamilies. Kyidris mutica Brown and Epitritus hexamerus Brown collected in Taehuksan Is. and Soan Is. respectively were recorded for the first time from Korea. The cluster analysis of faunal similarity using Nomura-Simpson's Coefficient(NSC) showed that the ant communities between the island were continuous in similarities.
