  • Physical resources are central to coping with economic hardships for people in low-income, yet life experiences such as resource loss and gain and their relationships with a sense of well-being received scarce attention. Thus this study investigated levels of loss and gain of physical resources, economic stability and well-being of 254 adults who participated in welfare-to-work programs; correlations and paths among these variables; and direct and indirect effects of economic stability by structural equation modeling. Major results were: first, the levels of resource loss and gain were below a moderate level and the level of gain was significantly higher than the loss level. Second, in the relationships with both economic stability and well-being, resource loss showed negative correlations, while resource gain showed significantly positive correlations. Third, the negative direct effect of resource loss either on the economic stability or on the well-being respectively was significant and the indirect effect on well-being through economic stability was also significant. Finally, the direct effect of resource gain on either economic stability or well-being was significant; and the indirect effect of resource gain on well-being was also significant. Thus in both models for resource loss and gain, the indirect effect of economic stability was significant, which supports partial mediation model. Based on these results, implications for social work practice and research were examined, particularly for enabling social work practice to utilize information regarding resource loss and gain, economic stability, and a sense of well-being that were embedded in the community life of people in low-income.

  • When liquefied natural gas (LNG) is stored in a tank, it is necessary to maintain low temperature. It is very important that insulation techniques are applied to the LNG cargo because of this extreme environment. Hence, laminated wood, especially plywood, is widely used as the structural member and insulation material in LNG cargo containment systems (CCS). However, fracture of plywood has been reported recently, owing to sloshing effect. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the strength of the structural member for solving the problem. In this study, compressed wood, which is used as a support in LNG independent type B tanks, was considered as a substitute for plywood. Compression and bending tests were performed on compressed wood under ambient and cryogenic temperatures to estimate the mechanical behaviors and fracture characteristics. In addition, the direction normal to the laminates surface was considered as an experimental variable. Finally, the feasibility of using compressed wood for an LNG CCS was evaluated from the test results.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine how rhythmic auditory stimulation (RAS), one of music therapy techniques for neurological rehabilitation, affects the factors of hemiplegia patients' turning gait and straight gait. This study is designed to compare elimination and intervention of music therapy for 4 weeks with repeated measure plan and measure factors are classified into 21 sub-factors. The subjects of this study were 4 patients who need walking training and they were requested by physical therapist a march and a lied were used to cure them by a researcher. Each session was composed of warming up, RAS gait training, ending. The music used for RAS gait training was provided with speed which was set to patient's own gait speed measured before music therapy. The speed was provided fast gradually and each session was proceeded for 50 minutes. The results of this study showed that walking abilities increase in the segments with music therapy (B) compared to those in the segment without music therapy (A), and this supports the previous report that the application of music therapy together with other treatments has a positive effect on improvement in the patient's walking abilities. In addition, this study is meaningful in that it demonstrated that RAS music therapy is helpful to improve walking abilities not only in straight gait but also in turning gait.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of exercise on intrinsic and extrinsic apoptosis signaling pathways in skeletal muscle. ICR-type white male mice were divided into a control group (CON: n=10) and an exercise training group (EX: n=10) after a 1 week adaptation period. EX performed treadmill running at 16.4 m/min with a 4% incline, 40 min/day and 5 days/week for 8 weeks. Cervical dislocation was performed at 48 hours after the last bout of exercise, after which gastrocnemius skeletal muscles were immediately collected. The results of verifying the intrinsic apoptosis pathway showed that there were no significant differences in Bcl-2, Bax, or the ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 proteins between EX and CON. On the other hand, the results of verifying the extrinsic apoptosis pathway showed that caspase-8 proteins were significantly lower in EX than in CON (p<0.05). Apoptosis suppressing protein HSP70 was higher in EX than in CON. In addition, caspase-3, which is the final factor for apoptosis, was not activated. These results indicate that apoptosis did not develop since caspase-3 is non-cleaved by the effects of caspase-8 and HSP70 extrinsic pathways rather than Bcl-2 and Bax intrinsic pathways among signal pathways for apoptosis.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of porcine cancellous bone as a scaffold in a rat calvarial defect model. Critical-sized defects were created in 30 male Sprague-Dawley rats. The animals were divided into critical defect (CD, n=10), $\beta$-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) graft (BT, n=10) and porcine cancellous bone graft (PCB, n=10) groups. Each defect was filled with $\beta$-TCP mixed with fibrin glue or porcine cancellous bone powder mixed with fibrin glue. In the CD group, the defect was left empty. All rats were sacrificed at 8 weeks after bone graft surgery, and bone formation was evaluated by gross observation, plain radiography, micro-computed tomography scanning and histological evaluation. Repair of bone defect was the least in the CD group, and significant new bone formation was observed in the PCB group. Grafting of porcine cancellous bone was more efficient for regenerating new bone than grafting $\beta$-TCP.

  • In this study, the effect of physical properties of $Pt/TiO_2$ on $NH_3$-selective catalytic oxidation (SCO) reaction at $200{\sim}350^{\circ}C$ was investigated. CO-chemisoption and BET analysis were carried out to verify physical properties of $Pt/TiO_2$. By characterizing physical properties of $Pt/TiO_2$ with respect to the Pt loading, the metal dispersion degree decreased as a function of the Pt loading amount. Also, the catalyst having a higher metal dispersion showed an excellent conversion efficiency of $NH_3$ to $N_2$. Since the specific surface area of the support affects the metal dispersion, $Pt/TiO_2$ catalysts were prepared using $TiO_2$ with different physical properties. As a result, it was confirmed that the catalyst having a wide specific surface area exhibited a excellent conversion of $NH_3$ to $N_2$.

  • In this article, electrochemical investigation of the transfer reaction of ionizable cefotiam (CTM), an antibiotic molecule across a polarized water/1,2-dichloroethane (water/1,2-DCE) interface was studied. Ion partition diagram providing the preferred charged form of CTM in either water or 1,2-DCE phase was established via the voltammetric evaluation of the transfer process of differently charged CTM species depending upon the pH variation of aqueous solutions. Thermodynamic information including the formal transfer potential and formal Gibbs transfer energy values in addition to important pharmacokinetics including partition coefficients of ionizable CTM were also evaluated. In particular, the current associated with the transfer of CTM present at pH 3.0 aqueous solution proportionally increased with respect to the CTM concentration which was further used for developing CTM sensitive ion sensor. In order to improve the portability and convenient usage, a single microhole interface fabricated in a supportive polyethylene terephthalate film was used of which hole was filled with a polyvinylchloride-2-nitrophenyloctylether (PVC-NPOE) gel replacing 1,2-DCE, a toxic organic solvent. A dynamic range of $1-10{\mu}M$ CTM was obtained.

  • Cancer is the second leading cause of the death in Korea. Family caregivers of dying patients manifest many psychological and physical symptoms of stress, and they often seek for informational support from health care providers. Unfortunately, however, few systematic studies identify the actual effect of such support on family caregivers. This study, thus, intends to evaluate the effect of informational support for hospice care. One group pretest-posttest design was used, employing the stress-coping model by Cohen and Wills as a conceptual framework. This research was conducted from July 1 to November 15, 1998, initially with 32 subjects sampled from hemato-oncology department of two general hospitals in Seoul, but reduced to 18 at the end due to the untimely death of patients or caregiver's refusal during the course of study. Informational supports were programmed to provide the family caregivers with 8 times of education and counseling as well as 24-hour hot-line for 4 weeks. A booklet that explains the various problems of hospice care was also prepared and distributed to all subjects. Data were collected by using self-report questionnaires and reviewing medical records. The tools used in this study were based on the Weinert's PRQ-II(scale of perceived social support), Spielberger's state anxiety inventory, and CES-D. Also included in the data collection were the general characteristics of family caregivers and patients, and the pain intensity and the performance status of patients. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon sign rank test and paired t-test using SPSSWIN program. The results of the study were as follows: 1.The perceived social support of family caregivers was not significantly increased with informational support for hospice care(t=1.64, one tailed p=.060). 2.The anxiety of family caregivers was significantly reduced following informational support for hospice care(t=3.48, one tailed p=.002). 3.The depression of family caregivers was significantly reduced following informational support for hospice care(t=-2.18, one tailed=.022). 4.The pain intensity of patients with terminal cancer was significantly reduced following informational support for hospice care(t=-2.41, two tailed p=.027). The results suggest that the informational support provided to family caregivers of patients with terminal cancer reduced not only their anxiety and depression but also the pain intensity of patients. Further study is necessary to consolidate the conceptual framework of this study with expanded number of subjects. Nevertheless, it was certain that the informational support program for hospice care was very helpful to both caregivers and patients. Thus, the informational support program is strongly recommended for the hospitals which have no hospice unit yet.

  • In this study, a computational chemistry methodology called as molecular modeling was been applied to explain several experiment results mechanistically. The reaction chosen for this study was to remove carbon dioxide, known as a primary greenhouse gas, by an epoxide via the carbon dioxide fixation to produce carbonates. This reaction inherently needs the use of catalysts because it has a significantly high activation barrier (55~59 kcal/mol). Among various types of catalysts, we studied in zeolitic imidazolate framework 90 (ZIF-90)/ionic liquid immobilized ZIF-90 (IL-ZIF-90), polystyrene-supported quaternized ammonium salt, KI/KI-glycine, and dimethylethanolamine (DMEA). First, probable reaction pathways were proposed based on calculated energetics by computational chemistry. The energetics was then used for the thermodynamic interpretation on the activity of catalysts. In the case of ZIF-90/IL-ZIF-90 and KI/KI-glycine, IL-ZIF-90 and KI-glycine showed better yields compared to their counterparts. The calculation proposed interesting results that it is not from the lowering of activation energy but from the unstable intermediates of ZIF-90 and KI-glycine. For DMEA, the calculated activation energy was ~42 kcal/mol, much lower than that of the non-catalytic reaction. A possible reaction pathway was located to confirm the interaction between −NH group from ammonium and oxygen from epoxide for polystyrene-supported quaternized ammonium salt.

  • This study introduces a method to easily fabricate highly monodisperse pectin hydrogel microfibers in a microfluidic device by using partial gelation. The hydrodynamic parameters between the pectin aqueous solution and the calcium ions containing oil solution are precisely controlled to form a stable elongation flow of the pectin aqueous solution, and partial gelation of the pectin aqueous solution is performed by the chelating of the calcium ions at the interface between the two phases. The partially gelled pectin aqueous solution is phase-separated from the oil solution in an aqueous calcium chloride solution outside the microfluidic device and is completely gelled to produce monodisperse pectin hydrogel microfibers. The thickness of the pectin hydrogel microfiber is controlled in a reproducible manner by controlling the volumetric flow rate of the initially injected pectin aqueous solution. The pectin hydrogel microfibers were 200 to 500 micrometers in diameter and had a coefficient of variation below 5% under all thickness conditions, indicating that the pectin hydrogel microfibers produced by partial gelation are highly monodisperse. In addition, biomaterials can be immobilized to the pectin hydrogel microfibers produced by a single process, demonstrating the possibility that our pectin hydrogel microfiber can be used as carriers for biomaterials or tissue engineering.
