This study was intended to estimate Hp(10) recommended by the ICRU using the $CaSO_4:Dy,P$ element developed in the KAERI. For the estimation of Hp(10), TL response should be compensated properly through the energy range using filter materials since $CaSO_4:Dy,P$ is of severe photon energy dependent response. Various experiments and computations using Monte Carlo Code were carried out for designing filter satisfying the performance requirements of the ISO related to TL dosimeter. Under the completed filter, the relative response of $CaSO_4:Dy,P$ showed $0.75{\sim}1.0$ for photons in the range of $20{\sim}662keV$. Especially it was possible to reduce the thickness of front filter and simplify the filter combination with rear filter of larger diameter and to considerably improve angular dependence by introducing taper to the filler.
A simple method has been established for determining RaA, RaB and RaC concentrations in airborne dust. This is to evaluate the concentration from measurement of total alpha activities in three selected-time intervals after an air sample is taken from the membrane filter paper (mean pore size: $0.8{\mu}m$). As a preliminary trial, a time-variation of the concentrations has been determined using the single-filter method at the KAERI site (N. Lat. $37^{\circ}38'$ and E. Long $127^{\circ}15'$), Seoul, Korea. It appears that there is a large variation of the concentrations depending on the sampling time. Generally the highest value was observed in the morning that may coincide with the highest density of atmosphere in a day while the lowest value was obtained around fourteen o'clock.

To evaluate the ability of Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra var. henenis Strapf) leaf extract (BL) to protect the skin from photodamage, the gross and microscopic changes in the skin of hairless mice and BL-treated mice exposed chronically to ultraviolet (UV) were examined. The skin of the UV-irradiated mice showed characteristic signs of photoaging, such as deep wrinkles across the back, increased epidermal thickeness, numerous cell infiltration, and many enlarged keratinizing cysts. BL-treated mice showed a significantly decreased wrinkling score and lack of proliferation of cysts. By the 22nd week, 88.9% (i.p. with saline) or 60.0% (topical administration with cream base) of the UV-irradiated mice developed at least one tumor. BL delayed tumor onset significantly. BL (i.p.) was also effective in reducing the occurrence of UV radiation-induced skin tumors and reduced the number of tumors per mouse. After 22 weeks of treatment, 37.5% (i.p.) of the mice treated with BL were tumor-free. Tumor multiplicity was reduced by 81.2% (i.p.) in the BL treated groups. It is noted that skin that is chronically exposed to UV is subject to photoaging and photocarcinogenesis and regular use of BL would prevent these photodamaging effects of UV.
Stability of a PWR core against xenon-induced axial power oscillation is studied using one-dimensional xenon trausient analysis code, DD1D, that has been developed and verified at KAERI. Analyzed by DD1D utilizing the Kori Unit 1 design and operating data is the sensitivity of axial stability in a PWR core to the changes in core physical parameters including core power level, moderator temperature coefficient, core inlet temperature, doppler power coefficient and core average turnup. Through the sensitivity study the Kori Unit 1 core is found to be stable against axial xenon oscillation at the beginning of cycle 1. But, it becomes less stable as turnup progresses, and unstable at the end of the cycle. Such a decrease in stability is mainly due to combined effect of changes in axial power distribution, moderator temperature coefficient and doppler power coefficient as core turnup progresses. It is concluded from the stability analysis of the Kori Unit 1 core that design of a large PWR with high power density and increased dimension can not avoid xenon-induced axial power instabilities to some extents, especially at the end of cycle.

Large-scale industrial facility structures continue to deteriorate due to the effects of operating and environmental conditions. The problems of these industrial facilities are potentially causing economic losses, environmental pollution, casualties, and national losses. Accordingly, in order to prevent disaster accidents of large structures in advance, the necessity of diagnosing structures using non-destructive inspection techniques is being highlighted. The defect occurrence, location and defect type of the structure are important parameters for predicting the remaining life of the structure, so continuous defect observation is very important. Recently, many researchers have been actively researching real-time monitoring technology to solve these problems. Structure Health Monitoring Inspection is a technology that can identify and respond to the occurrence of defects in real time, but there is a limit to check the degree of defects and the direction of growth of defects. In order to compensate for the shortcomings of these technologies, the importance of defect imaging techniques is emerging, and in order to find defects in large structures, a method of inspecting a wide range using guided ultrasonic is effective. The work presented here introduces a calculation for the shape factor for evaluation of the damaged area, as well as a variable β parameter technique to correct a damaged shape. Also, we perform research in modeling simulation and an experiment for comparison with a suggested inspection method and verify its validity. The curved structure image obtained by the advanced RAPID algorithm showed a good match between the defect area and the shape.
In deep geological disposal concept for spent nuclear fuel, it is well-known that rock mass at near-field experiences the thermal-hydraulic-mechanical (THM) coupled behavior. The mechanical properties of rock changes during the coupled process, and it is important to consider the changes into the analysis of numerical simulation and in-situ tests for long-term stability evaluation of nuclear waste disposal repository. This report collected the previous studies on indirect coupled behaviors of rock. The effects of water saturation and temperature on some mechanical properties of rock was considered, while the change in hydraulic conductivity of rock due to stress was included in the indirect coupled behavior.
Cavitation phenomena observed during the operation of a submerged plain journal bearing (PJB) can affect bearing performance parameters such as dynamic coefficients, whirl frequency ratio, and critical mass. This study presents numerical solutions of the Reynolds equation for steadily and dynamically loaded submerged PJBs with half-Sommerfeld (HS), Reynolds, and Jakobsson-Floberg-Olsson (JFO) cavitation models when the supply pressure is larger or equal to the cavitation pressure. The loads at various eccentricity ratios are identical; however, the attitude angle is approximately 6% smaller when the eccentricity ratio is between 0.2 and 0.7 and the JFO model is used, compared to that when the Reynolds model is used. Dynamic coefficients obtained with the HS and Reynolds model show good agreement with each other, except for kxz, which is sensitive to changes in the force normal to the rotor weight, and is attributed to the difference in the attitude angle obtained with each cavitation model. Stiffness coefficients are determined using the pressure distribution in the film, and therefore, when the JFO model is used, the direct stiffness coefficients are affected and show opposite signs for most eccentricity ratios. The mass-conservative JFO model can predict at least a 30% smaller critical mass compared to that using the HS and Reynolds models. Thus, the instability analysis results can change based on the cavitation model used in a submerged PJB. The results of this research indicate that the JFO model should be used when designing a rotor system supported by submerged PJBs.
A high voltage stabilization system for the SNU 1.5MV Tandem Van do Graaff accelerator was set up and its operational characteristics were examined and optimized. The optimum parameters of beam transport system were experimentally determined, and under the proper condition the accelerated proton beam current of 350nA was obtained at the target chamber. Without the high voltage stabilization the observed magnitude of voltage fluctuation was $\Delta$V/ V=5.2$\times$10$^{-3}$ without ion beam and 7.2$\times$10$^{-3}$ with ion beam, respectively, and its apparent ripple frequency for voltage fluctuations was about 3Hz or less. Through the optimized operation of the high voltage stabilization system, the terminal voltage fluctuation was reduced to $\Delta$V/V=2.45$\times$10$^{-4}$ and the energy stability with $\Delta$E/E=2.44$\times$10$^{-4}$ was steadily maintained at the 247.3kV terminal voltage, and the stabilization factor was deduced to be 29.4.

This experiment was carried out to obtain a basic information for new variety development. The local soybean (Glycine max. L) lines used were endowed from Chungnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services. These lines were planted at upland farm of Chungnam Nat'l Univ., College of Agri. after treatment with mutagen $\gamma$-ray. All characteristics measured were decreased due to the $\gamma$-ray treatment than check except the branches of main stem of the Hannam and plant height of the Sobak. Especially the Sobak and the Eunha among these lines were shown very sensitivly than others treated with $\gamma$-ray of 15Krad. Of characteristics surveyed the nodes per plant was very sensitive to $\gamma$-ray, while the grain weight per plant, the pods per plant and the branches per plant were gradually decreased to further radioactivity about $\gamma$-ray treatment. In the Pungsan and the Sobak lines there were not shown significant between major characteristics at treatments including check. Other lines were also not shown positive correlation among characteristics except between stem diameter and branches(0.64*), grain weight and plant height(0.77**) at check of the Eunha, between stem nodes and stem diameter(0.65*) at check of the Kwangan and between number of pods and stem diameter(0.70*) at check of the Danyeop. From result this experiment, some of lines used were to be appeared characters of interest, for example, such as the short stem and the early flowering. Therefore these lines were needed more advanced generations for stability and performance.

For determination of mutation frequency induced by chronic irradiation of low dose gamma rays, Tradescarrfia clone 4430 was exposed to Co-60 ${\gamma}$ rays with different exposure rates from 3.6mR/day to 182R/day in or out of the Gamma Field at Kumkok Experiment Farm of KAERI. Somatic mutations based on pink mutant events of the stamen hair cells were clearly observed by the treatment. The pink mutant events were increased proportionally with increasing exposure rates of gamma ray except for relatively high dose rates of 105 R/day and 182 R/day, indicating saturation effect of mutation. The somatic pink mutations could be fairly detectable even in the low dose rate of 3.6mR/day. Therefore, this stamen hair system of Tradescantia clone 4430 seemed to be an reasonable test system for detecting mutability of low level irradiation. These results imply that artificial mutation induction in the fruit and ornamental trees could be expected in the ${\gamma}$-field.
