  • The purpose of this paper was to understand the mediating effect of academic achievement on the relationship between youth activity participation and career decision-making in middle school students. To this end, data from the KCYPS2018 (Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018) were used, and this research proceeded with 2,471 middle school 1st grade students. This analysis method was a regression analysis to examine any mediating effect. And the findings are as follows. Middle school students' youth activities participation had a significant effect on career decision-making and academic achievement, and the effect of youth activities participation on career decision-making was mediated in part by academic achievement. Thus, a variety of youth activity programs should be developed and provided to middle school students to increase their motivation and academic achievement. Education and training for youth leaders and teachers should be provided to help middle school students make career decisions by operating youth activity programs in conjunction with the free semester system.

  • This study examined the factors affecting the career identity of high school students. We adopted the ecological systems theory by Bronfenbrenner. The consumer typology approach was applied based on their negative emotions, and they were categorized into two distinct groups: unstable emotion group(n=903) and stable emotion group(n=1,107). We used the panel data of Korean Children & Youth Panel Survey. Data of a total of 2,010 participants were analyzed. The results of this study are as follows. In the unstable emotion group, parental supervision, parental excessive expectation, peer communication, peer trust, and teacher attachment significantly influenced career identity. In the stable emotion group, parental supervision, parental abuse, peer communication, and teacher attachment significantly influenced career identity.

  • This study analyzed the latent profile for identifying the difference in the dependence on smartphone use among middle school students in the 1st grade using the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS). From the result of this study, first the latent class was separated according to the type of dependence on smartphone use. Class 1 included the students (from fifth grade in elementary school) whose level of reliance on smartphone use was low. Class 2 was selected as the group whose level of reliance on smartphone was high. Secondly, in comparing class 2 to class 1, it was found that the students who have a high probability of being in class 1 were those whose fathers are high achievers, have high early self-esteem and less age attachment. Thirdly, the students in class 1 had a higher sense of neglect than those in class 2. Furthermore, the self-determination of the students in class 2 mediated the effect of neglect on the adolescents' dependence on smartphone use both directly and indirectly.

  • Grit is a person's passion and perseverance that drive them to achieve long-term and meaningful goals. The purpose of this study was to identify practical resources that can affect single parents' grit. Using the fourth-year panel data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 (KCYPS 2018), descriptive statistics were produced and a correlation analysis was conducted for 284 single parents. Hierarchical regression analysis was also performed to explore the demographic factors, personal resources(psychological, lifestyle/health), and family resources(family relationships/child, economic) that affect single parents' grit. First, the correlation analysis revealed that single parents' grit had a significant correlation with age, education status, life satisfaction, happiness, self-esteem, smartphone dependency, physical activity time, frequency of breakfast consumption, household size, parent's satisfaction with child's school achievement and school adjustment, subjective family economic status, and private education expenses. Second, the hierarchical regression analysis revealed that education status, self-esteem, employment status, smartphone dependency, physical activity time, household size, parent's satisfaction with child's school achievement, and subjective family economic status were significant factors affecting single parents' grit. Based on the research results, this study suggests directions for programs and policies to provide a stable environment for single-parent families to raise their children.

  • This study identifies the factors that influence juvenile delinquency, which has increased both offline and online. It is hypothesized that the influence of negative parenting on online and offline juvenile delinquency is mediated through smartphone dependency and personal emotional problems. In addition, the study hypothesizes that participation in cultural activities soothes the influence. Using SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 20.0 programs, we conducted a confirmatory factor analysis, a multi-mediation analysis, and a cross-group comparative analysis. The analyses found the significant mediation effect of smart phone dependence and personal emotional problems on the relationship between negative parenting and juvenile delinquiency. Participation in cultural activities overall weakens the hypothesized effects.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of youth activities on adolescents' sense of community using "Korean Children & Youth Panel Study" data collected by the National Youth Policy Institute. Especially, this study tried to reflect various aspects of youth activities, such as participation in activities, number of types of activities, and satisfaction with activities. Also, this study paid particular attention to examining the cumulative effect of youth activities. The main results are as follows. First, the participation of youth activities, the satisfaction level of experiential activities, and the number of kinds of experiential activities varied according to income level and regional scale. Next, the results of the OLS regression analysis on adolescents' sense of community show that participation in youth activities, number of kinds of activities that participated in, and satisfaction with activities during the first-year of high-school all influence adolescents' sense of community. On the other hand, the results of analysis of the effects of cumulative experience during middle school during middle school shows that it is difficult to ensure long-term effects by only participating in youth activities. Positive effects persisted only when adolescents participated in high quality youth activities during middle school. The results of this study show that the qualitative aspects of youth activities are important for sustaining the effectiveness of youth activities.

  • This study aims to examine the mediating effects of positive parenting attitudes, self-esteem, and depression on the relationship between parental happiness and children's happiness. To this end, the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 were used. Structural equation modeling was implemented based on 2,551 data collected from fourth-grade children of elementary school and their parents. The happiness felt by the parents was found to have a positive correlation with positive parenting attitudes, self-esteem, and happiness perceived by the children, and a negative correlation with the children's depression. And, the happiness felt by the parents was found to affect the happiness of children by sequentially progressing through positive parenting attitudes, children's self-esteem and depression. Such results reflect how parents who perceive themselves to be happy tend to be warm, provide structure, and support the autonomy of their children. This also shows how such positive parenting attitudes encourage children to believe that they are valuable individuals and how this plays a role in reducing their sense of depression and enhancing their happiness.
