  • The purpose of this article is to investigate the relationship between children's goals and activities in terms of continuity and transformation of their learning through interactions between learners and practices across settings. By observing children's activities across settings and tasks and interviewing the children, I found that the continuity and transformation in learning are developed in the relationship between changing individuals and changing social context. In this process, social interaction with others plays an important role in changing their goals and strategies. The results imply that appropriate tasks and teachers' guidance are crucial to facilitate students' learning across settings.

  • This paper shows that digital libraries can be understood through STIN models which emphasize interactions among components in networks. The enrollment strategies in the American Memory make human and non-human factors interact. Specifically, this paper articulates that the relationships between users and collections, between users and staff, and between users and users are closely linked through the strategies . Observing the linkages among these components ,this paper found that the enrollment processes not only draw users to the American Memory, but also alter roles of components and creates new roles and players for them. The alterations of roles and the resulting changes of relationships among components mean that digital libraries lead to transform the grounding of knowledge works in a society.

  • The purpose of the study is to examine teachers', students', and parents' perception on the five-day-work-week school system, and to suggest ways of effective implementation. For the effective operation of the five-day-work-week school system, the curriculum should be reorganized based on current conditions, and based on problems of the actual condition, social infrastructure should be expanded. These will be contributed to taking root the five-day-work-week school system in a transition period.

  • Kuwaitis faced with as serious problems with respect to quality and equity in education. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the Kuwaiti education in the 21 century knowledge society. It has its own problems and limits in addition to future possibilities. Adopting comparative approaches and idiographic methodology together, investigators firstly examines the Kuwaiti education in terms of political, economic, educational, and international aspects. In addition, we investigators outlined Kuwaiti education in its cultural identity. Necessary measures and policy recommendations were drawn finally according to the analysis.

  • This case study contributes to the efforts on identifying the essential features of responsive teaching practice where students' mathematical thinking is central in instructional interactions. We firstly conceptualize responsive teaching as a type of teachers' instructional decisions based on noticing literature, and agree on the claim which teachers' responsive decisions should be accounted in classroom interactional contexts where teacher, students and content are actively interacting with each other. Building on this responsive teaching model, we analyze classroom observation data of a 7th grade teacher who implemented a lesson package specifically designed to respond to students' mathematical thinking, called Formative Assessment Lessons. Our findings suggest the characteristics of responsive teaching practice and identify the relationship between noticing and responsive teaching as: (a) noticing on students' current status of mathematical thinking by eliciting and anticipating, (b) noticing on students' potential conceptual development with follow-up questions, and (c) noticing for all students' conceptual development by orchestrating productive discussions. This study sheds light on the actual teachable moments in the practice of mathematics teachers and explains what, when and how to support teachers to improve their classroom practice focusing on supporting all students' mathematical conceptual development.

  • This paper analyzed the impact of school library programs on student achievement in the United States focusing on the following five studies: the Colorado Study I(l993), II(2000), the Texas Study(2001), the Missouri Study(2003), and the Illinois Study(2005). All five studies, which used correlation analysis, factor analysis, and multiple regression showed a positive and statistically significant relationship between school library programs and student achievement: That is when school libraries have higher levels of professional and. total staffing, larger collections of print and electronic resources, and more funding, students tend to earn higher scores on state reading tests. This paper also investigated the NCLB Act in relation to enhancing children's literacy and school library reading programs.

  • The PATROL instructional model only uses digital textbooks. PATROL is an acronym for Planning, Action, Tracking, Recommending, Ordering, and Leading. Teachers have a difficult time using current digital textbooks to determine how much time students spend using course materials. This is because current digital textbooks can only show the content of paper textbooks and display additional multimedia materials. In this study, digital textbook functions were designed based on the PATROL model in order to analyze students' learning situations, diagnose problems, and offer solutions. Digital textbook are based on learning analytics named SEE-PAD. SEE-PAD is composed of the following: Social network analysis; Evaluation and assEssment analysis; Predictive analysis; Adaptive learning analysis; and the analysis Dashboard. I drew and showed the use case and sequence diagrams of SEE-PAD to help design digital textbook functions.

  • The purposes of this study were to analyze the domestic research trend of the STS Education and to evaluate the application effects of STS teaching model by using Meta-analysis. The selected research articles were 180 articles including 104 of the master's theses and 76 of science education journal articles published from 1991 to 2006. For the evaluation of the effects of STS teaching and learning model, 56 articles were selected finally. The mean effect size of the application effects of STS teaching and learning was 0.40. The result indicated that STS teaching had more positive effects than the traditional teaching on enhancing student's attitude for science, academic achievement in science, inquiry ability, attitude for environment and knowledge for environment. Especially, it had shown the most positive effects on improvement in the attitude for environment. Therefore, it might be better to reflect these results for the best effect of STS teaching. To assess STS education on the whole, it is necessary to synthesize the effects of STS teaching and learning model and the results of the study on teachers' and students' understanding about the interrelation of science, technology and society.

  • Analogical reasoning is a mathematically useful way of thinking. By analogy reasoning, students can improve problem solving, inductive reasoning, heuristic methods and creativity. The purpose of this study is to analyze the analogical reasoning of preservice mathematics teachers while constructing quadratic curves defined by eccentricity. To do this, we produced tasks and 28 preservice mathematics teachers solved. The result findings are as follows. First, students could not solve a target problem because of the absence of the mathematical knowledge of the base problem. Second, although student could solve a base problem, students could not solve a target problem because of the absence of the mathematical knowledge of the target problem which corresponded the mathematical knowledge of the base problem. Third, the various solutions of the base problem helped the students solve the target problem. Fourth, students used an algebraic method to construct a quadratic curve. Fifth, the analysis method and potential similarity helped the students solve the target problem.
