A Case Study on Error of Underachievers in Mathematics in Function Learning (함수 학습에 나타난 수학 학습부진아의 오류에 대한 사례 연구)

  • The study aims to figure phenomena and changes that underachievers in mathematics show in the process of learning a function. It is necessary to remind basic concepts once again in advance at a time of teaching underachievers in mathematics to check what they have difficulties in learning for further teaching later on. Five participating students said that teachers' detailed explanation was more helpful, and they found it difficult to learn tables, graphs and formulas at first, but as time progressed, they naturally accepted them. In this regard, it is necessary to use various expressions and means to teach underachievers in mathematics.

A study of the search for a good secondary science classes: a case study of the alternative school students ('좋은 중등 과학 수업'에 대한 탐색: 대안학교 학생의 사례를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate secondary students' perception of a good secondary science classes. Subjects were 18 secondary students who enrolled in alternative school located in Korea. The instruments of this study was a questionnaire which consisted of 18 items on 4 domains. Also data were collected from in-deep interviews and students' drawing. The results of the study were summarized as follows; First, students explained that good schools have the characteristics of the interesting and respectful atmosphere. Also there are good relationships between teachers and students. Second, they emphasized that good teachers are humanistic teachers. Third, good science classes are based on the constructivism in terms of the education methods. The results suggest that it may be necessary to remodel the merits of the alternative schools to solve the problem of public school. It is important to develop expertise of the science teachers in alternative school through teacher education programs based on the constructivism. Also it is necessary to provide appropriate learning space and various media for effective science teaching and learning in alternative school.

  • 초등학교 학급 홈페이지에 아바타를 접목시켜, 초등학교 학생들의 홈페이지에의 몰입 및 사이버 자아개념에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고자 한다. 학급 홈페이지를 구축, 활용하는 이유가 학교 교육 현장에서 이루어지는 교과 지도와 생활 지도를 온라인 상으로 확장하고 시간과 공간을 초월하여 지속적으로 지도하고자 하는 것에 있다고 볼 때, 방과 후 학생들의 자발적인 참여 및 활동이 필수적이다. 이러한 점에 착안하여 아바타를 접목시켜 활용하는 것이 과연 학생들의 학급 홈페이지에의 몰입 요소로써 작용할 수 있는지를 알아보는 것은 의미 있는 일이라 생각된다. 또한 사이버 공간에서의 새로운 자아 표현으로 여겨지는 아바타가 초등학생의 사이버 자아(cyber-self)에 어떤 영향을 주는가를 파악하는 것은 또 하나의 사회로 구축되어지고 있는 사이버 공간을 어떻게 받아들여야하는가에 대한 교육적 시사점을 줄 수 있을 것이다.

A Cognition Analysis of Factors of Employment and Successful Career Among Faculty, Students, and Business Leaders in Engineering (여성 취업과 직장 내 성공 요인에 대한 공대학생, 교수 및 기업체 대표 간의 인식 분석)

  • We compared the cognitions of students, faculty, and business leaders in engineering related to woman employment and successful career. For this research, we developed questionnaires for 240 students of Korea National University of Transportation and Korea National University of Education, and 8 faculty who taught the students in the improvement program of engineering education environment for gender sensitivity, and 28 business leaders of company located in Chungbuk. As results, there were lots of difference among the cognitions of students, faculty, and the leaders related to woman employment and successful career. Especially, leaders gave considerable thought to upright character and affective capacity when they select employees. Therefore, we need to concentrate efforts to bring up talent women whom companies prefer by strengthening the strength and make up for the weakness as women in the improvement program of engineering education environment for gender sensitivity.

Middle School Students' Ideas about the purposes of Laboratory Work (과학 실험의 목적에 대한 중학생의 인식조사)

  • Researches on laboratory work show that students often achieve little meaningful learning through laboratory work. One reason for this failure is that students often do not know the different types of laboratory work and the 'purposes' of them. Therefore, this study investigated middle school student' ideas about the purposes of laboratory work. To seventh grade students(n=147) of middle school in Seoul, Korea, we asked (Question 1) "Why do scientists do laboratory work?" and (Question 2) "Why do you do laboratory work in science classes?" It was required a short essay including the reasons and examples of them. From the results, it was found that 56.8% of the students had ideas that scientists do laboratory work for discovering new facts or inventing something, and 82.9% of the students responded that they do laboratory work for understanding and memorizing the contents of science textbook. In addition, the differences according to gender and to school achievement level, and the relationship between the ideas about scientists' laboratory work and about school science laboratory work were examined. The results showed that boys responded 'social usefulness' more frequently than girl, while girls mentioned 'personal pleasure' more frequently than boys in relation to the purposes of scientists' laboratory work(p<.05). According to the achievement level, it was founded that 'middle' level students replied 'to remember' more frequently than high and low levels in relation to school science laboratory work. Finally, students who had ideas that scientists do laboratory work for verifying a theory had the similar ideas about school science laboratory work. In conclusion, students are lack of diverse and proper views about laboratory work. It is recommended that teacher need to make clear the purpose of laboratory work and help students to understand of it.

The Nature of Variables Represented in the Titles of 7th Graders' Inquiry Report (중학교 1학년 학생들의 자유 탐구보고서에 나타난 변인의 유형)

  • To investigate the 7th graders' ideas on inquiry, researchers analysed the titles of inquiry report, which were submitted as summer vacation homework. The subjects were four classes of 141 thirteen year old boys and girls in a school in Seoul. After analysing the titles of student's report, researchers classified the titles into 9 types according to the clarity and the nature of variables in the titles. The fact that few students represented the variables in the report title and most of the variables used were categoric was found.

Grade 7th Pupils' Ideas about Identification and Control of Variables in Inquiry Problems (중학교 1학년 학생들의 탐구 문제에 대한 변인 판별 및 통제)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the ideas of pupils with that of the scientists about controlling and identifying of variables, in the two cases: open or guided inquiry. The subjects were the 7th grade boys and girls in a school, in Seoul, Korea. For the guided inquiry, the problems were given by the experiments of pupils' text. Pupils were asked to identify the variables in the experiments. For the open inquiry, pupils set their own inquiry problem. The pupils whose marks are within upper one-third of three classes were chosen. Pupils' ideas on variables were investigated in the design of experiment for their problems. In that, questionnaire developed by researchers was used. In the former, many of the pupils identify just only one variable despite of the fact there were two independent or dependent variables in the experiments. In the latter, the number of independent variables increased two or three. However, pupils do not control independent variables: they vary two independent variables simultaneously in the design of experiment. From these, we compared the pupils' ideas on variables with the scientists'

  • The purposes of this study are to analyze error that the students in science and engineering show in the process of thinking a extremum value. First, in view of examples of incorrect answers that appeared in a test by students in science and engineering, it has been found that the most frequent incorrect answers were due to a lack of understanding about necessary matters and concepts. In this regard, it is necessary to use various examples and pictures(graphs) to teach students in science and engineering. In addition, it has been found that it is more effective to use questions asking why it happens and why they think that way to help those having difficulties in understanding various concepts and principles.

  • One of the major results of National Assessment of Educational Achievement in 2003 is that the final test results were reported by four levels such as Advanced, Proficient, Basic, and Below Basic. We used it to investigate into the characteristics of students according to achievement levels, and finally we listed them. We think that these results will be a help to instructions according to achievement levels.

  • 수학적으로 생각하고 배우는 과정에서 의사소통의 역할은 지나치게 간과되었다(Greenes, & Schulman, 1996). NCTM에서 수학적 의사소통을 강조하고 있으나, 교실 수업 여건상 충분한 의사소통 경험을 가지기 어렵다. 그리고, 정보화 시대를 맞아, 교육에서도 ICT활용 교육이 일정 수준이상으로 의무화되었다. 또한, 인터넷을 활용한 웹기반교육이 확산됨에 따라, 효과적인 수학적 의사소통 방법이 요구된다. 따라서, ICT활용 수업 활동의 한 유형으로 웹토론을 고찰하고, 실시간 채팅 중심의 웹토론이 학생들의 수학 학습 과정에 관련된 태도에 영향을 주는지를 살펴보아야 한다. 그 결과, 즉각적인 상호작용이 이루어지는 실시간 웹토론이 학생들의 인터넷을 활용한 수학에 대한 태도 영역 중 학습동기 요인에 가장 효과적이었다. 또한, 실시간 토론을 경험한 학생들의 만족도는 매우 긍정적임을 실험을 통하여 확인할 수 있었다.
