  • This study investigated the development of geometrical thinking levels of the under achievers at mathematics through supplementary classes according to van Hiele's learning process by stages using mathematical journal writing. We selected five under achievers at mathematics among the fourth graders. We examined their geometrical thinking levels in advance and interviewed them to collect basic data related to their family backgrounds and their attitude toward mathematics and their characteristics. Supplementary classes for the under achievers were conducted a couple of times a week during 12 weeks. Each class was conducted through five learning stages of van Hiele and journal writing was applied to the last consolidating stage. After 12th class had been finished, posttest on geometrical thinking levels was conducted and the journals written by the pupils were analyzed to find out changes in their geometrical thinking levels. The result is that three out of five under achievers showed one or two level-up in their geometrical thinking levels, though the other two pupils remained at the same level as the results by the pretest. Moreover we found that mathematical journal writing could provide the pupils with opportunities to restructure the content which they study through their class.

  • Many researchers have supported in various aspects that elementary students should experience alternative algorithms as well as formal standard one for addition and subtraction. Korean elementary mathematics textbooks have some units for alternative algorithms for addition and subtraction. In special, the change of unit sequence in the second grade revised mathematics textbooks may cause the necessity for discussion about teaching sequence and teaching purpose between alternative algorithms and formal standard one. Therefore, this study aims to consider the purpose of teaching alternative algorithms and to induce implications for their teaching strategies and sequence. To do this, related references, curriculum and textbooks were analyzed. Four lessons were observed and three teachers were interviewed. The main content of this study is the result of analysis on students' activities and teachers'teaching approaches. This study also includes didactical implications based on the result.

  • Science drama can be an useful tool for understanding the nature of science, Science-Technology-Society relationship by providing indirect experiences to young students. Specific science concept and knowledge can also be learned with high interests. In this study, to explore the usefulness of science drama in elementary science lessons, two scripts of science drama and lesson plans were developed and implemented. Six step model for science drama lessons was also suggested. One was 'Manhattan Project' which dealt with social, ethical responsibility in using science & technology (science argument drama), and the other was 'Mom, My blood type is O' which explained the heredity of blood type (science concept drama). Two teachers were asked to write their journals during preparation and implementation of science drama lessons, and the lessons were observed by the researcher and video taped for analysis. Some students were interviewed just after the lessons by the teacher and all students were asked to write their impressions, change of their thought, what is leant etc. Overall responses of students and teachers on the two science drama lessons were very positive, 'Mom, My blood type is O' got more positive responses, and girls were more positive than boys. Some students anticipated another science drama even suggest topics for it. 'Mom, My blood type is O' was successful in making students (grade 3) understand the knowledge related with heredity of blood type (71% of the students got perfect answer). In 'Manhattan Project' students (grade 5) perceived more diverse location of responsibility after the lesson, but the danger and harmfulness of atomic power was embossed. This implied the need of more careful planning for the relevant learning activities before and after the play of science drama. Two teachers perceived the science drama as a new, useful tool for some subject which is hard to deal with by other teaching method. They were also satisfied with students' high interest and engagement during the science drama lessons but the extra time and effort for the lessons were pointed out as a main difficulties.

  • The elementary school English Education Course consists of four integrated aspects of language (Listen, Speak, Read, Write) used to develop skills for daily communication in English. yet the 6th Grade English Education Curriculum focuses almost exclusively on sentence completion through copying and "fill-in-the-blank" exercises. Further, these activities are insufficient time to develop literacy skills. Additionally, the curriculum's emphasis on memorization within the written component is very time consuming for students, leading many to develop negative opinions of the written aspect of a comprehensive understanding of English. This thesis attempts to address each these problems through development of a web-based Learning Model for Cooperative Writing in English. The study resulted in three observations. First, this model overcame limitations of the current teaching model in schools. Second, students expressed more interest in the experimental model than in the current curriculum and standard pedagogical methods. Finally, the study demonstrated that improvement of English literacy is indeed possible using the model presented here.
