Using an Intervention Model for Occupational Therapy Service Specialist Based on a Special Education Supporting Center (특수교육지원센터에 기반을 둔 작업치료서비스 전문가의 중재모델 사용)

  • The purpose of this study was to survey the intervention model, intervention settings, intervention time, factors influencing selection of intervention model, relationship between intervention model and areas which supporting center for special education based occupational therapist was using. Study data were provided by 46 therapy supporting service professionals through e-mail and analyzed. The findings indicated that first, the therapy supporting service professionals often employed a direct therapy(individual) focusing on performance component of child. Second, they believed that direct therapy is most effective in improving children's performance and raising awareness of the importance of occupational therapy. Third, when choose intervention model, they took into consideration the child's performance components deficits and mind of team chief. Fourth, no correlation between the application time and the perception of effectiveness of intervention model. Also didn't find correlation between applying time of intervention model and intervention area. When putting the various research result together, the model school-based occupational therapists using was similar to medical model. Therefore it is need a study to develop effective intervention model and apply it in school environment.

A Systematic Review on Effects of School-Based Occupational Therapy (학교기반 작업치료에 관한 체계적 고찰)

  • Objective : This study was conducted to determine effects of school-based occupational therapy through a systematic review Methods : We systematically reviewed studies published in PubMed and Ovid from 2000 to June 2014 using keyword 'school' or 'children' and 'occupational therapy'. Fourteen studies were selected. The level of evidence, participants, assessment, intervention area, method and effects were analyzed by reviewing full text. Results : The most group and age of participants were normal child with fine motor difficulties and 6~8 years old in selected studies. The most target area of intervention was handwriting, fine motor and visuo-motor integration (68.8%) and the most method was direct treatment (71.4%). The top on the assessment was Beery-Buktenica Test of Visual-Motor Integration (14.9%) and next was Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency (11.1%). Effects of school based occupational therapy were founded in the visual motor integration, learning skill, level of participation, fine motor, play and behavioral problem. Conclusion : This systematic review provides evidence concerning the participants, intervention, assessment and effects of school based occupational therapy. It should be used for basic data for the research and practice of school-based occupational therapy.

A Systematic Literature Review of School Readiness Programs for Children With Disabilities (장애아동의 학교준비도 프로그램(School Readiness Program)에 대한 체계적 문헌 고찰)

  • Objective : This study aimed to confirm the research characteristics by analyzing the literature that applied the school readiness programs for children with disabilities. Methods : Studies were collected from the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Research Information Sharing Service databases. The key terms were "School readiness" AND ("Occupational Therapy" OR "Rehabilitation") in English and Korean. Total eight articles were selected through the selection and exclusion criteria. Results : The programs included multi-type training, motor skill training, parent training, and mobile application training. The providers were psychologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech pathologists, community workers, educators, and the psychologists who conducted most of the research. The program factors can be classified into academic function, motor function, social function, parental training, and others. Academic and social functions accounted for the largest proportion of the respondents. The intervention improved multiple skills, literacy, parenting skills, and gross fine motor function. Conclusion : This study aimed to provide basic data for school-based occupational therapy by analyzing school readiness programs for children with disabilities. Recently, interest in and research on school readiness has increased. Occupational therapists should also establish their roles in the field of school-related rehabilitation and provide various school-based occupational therapies.

A Case Study on the Effects of Occupational Therapy Program on Improving School Readiness in Children With Developmental Delays: Focusing on Adaptation and Daily Living Skills (발달지연 아동의 학교준비도 향상을 위한 작업치료 프로그램 효과에 대한 사례 연구: 적응기술, 일상생활기술 영역을 중심으로)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an occupational therapy program on the school readiness, focusing on adaptation skills and daily life skills, in children with developmental delays. Methods : The study involved a boy with developmental delay, aged 5 years and 8 months. The program was conducted twice a week, with a total of 8 sessions spread over 4 weeks. The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) was employed, targeting class preparation and use of the toilet. Pre-post tests and follow-up evaluations were carried out to compare changes. Data analysis involved video recordings of the subject's performance. Results : The COPM results indicated improvements in both the performance and satisfaction levels for class preparation and toilet use. Processing skills showed seven improvements in class preparation and eight improvements in toilet use during post-testing. Activity performance observations further confirmed improvements in both class preparation and toilet use during post-test and follow-up evaluations. Conclusion : Occupational therapy improves school readiness (adaptation skill, daily living activity skill) for children with developmental delays, and has a positive effect on overall school readiness.

Sensory Integration and Occupational Therapy for Elementary Students Collaborative Group Program : Implementing School AMPS (초등학생집단 다전문가 협업프로그램에서의 School AMPS 분석을 통한 작업치료와 감각통합접근의 의미)

  • Objective : This is a descriptive study using a program review collaborative group program by special educator and occupational therapist for supporting children's school tasks, and it is designed to explore how changed school performance skills and to analyze how applied intervention methods including sensory integrative approach. Methods : Participants were 6 male elementary students(5 = 1st grade, 1 = 2nd grade). Pilot program had reviewed and its results used as base for planning main program. Main program was implemented by collaborative process with teacher and occupational therapist for 1 year. School AMPS was used to assess school task participants, and informal motor and process skill observation was used to assess self-help activities. Description of records by professions about intervention strategies through assessments was described as qualitative way. Japanese sensory inventory was used by parents. Results : Through the collaborative process, assessing children, planning and modifying program, establishing intervention strategies were implemented. Self-help abilities in group program were increased much more independently. School task abilities were increased slightly but skills changed irregularly and unexpectedly and their reasons became considered more complex from sensory processing reasons to social and emotional reasons. Conclusion : Sensory integration had benefits for primary group program and more complex intervention strategies became to emerge demands for person- environment-task challenges. Collaborative practice with teacher and occupational therapist was supplement and synergic effect for children and group dynamics. More objective and comprehensive methods for measure collaboration and group effect would be needed in further study.

Effectiveness of Occupation Based Lifestyle Intervention Program for Health Management of Community Dwelling Older Adults (지역사회 거주 노인의 건강관리를 위한 작업기반 라이프스타일 중재 프로그램의 효과)

  • Objective : This study aimed to assess the effects of occupation-based lifestyle intervention programs on older adults in the local community. Methods : Nine community-dwelling older individuals participated in this study using a one-group pre-post design. The occupation-based lifestyle intervention program consisted of 12 group sessions, and one individual session was conducted for seven weeks. Occupational balance, activity occupancy, activity participation, depression, health-related quality of life, and program satisfaction were assessed. Results : The average attendance rate of the nine participants was 10.11 (SD=1.36). Overall occupational balance (p=.012), activity participation status (p=.008), performance (p=.012), and satisfaction with activity participation (p=.008) were increased. Furthermore, the results showed changes in leisure time (p=.008) and rest time (p=.008). Finally, there were some improvements in the overall health-related quality of life (p=.034) and depression scores (p=.012). Conclusions : Occupation-based lifestyle intervention programs positively affected occupational balance, activity occupancy, activity participation, depression, and health-related quality of life in community-dwelling older adults. This research suggests promising benefits and feasibility of the program for community-dwelling older adults.

A Phenomenological Study on Students' Experiences of Flipped Learning-Based Class of Sensory Integration Therapy (대학생의 플립드 러닝 기반 감각통합치료 수업 경험에 관한 현상학적 연구)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to investigate the meaning of students' experience participating in the flipped learning based instruction in sensory integration, and to understand the demand and introspection of participants. Methods : This study used a phenomenological approach of qualitative study. The participants were 10 students in 3rd year of the occupational therapy program in K Univeristy. Data information was collected by one-to-one interview and analyzed through phenomenological research method. Results : Through the interview, 20 units of meaning, 8 central meanings, and 3 themes were drew. The information collected were analyzed into three themes; Learning Experiences in Online and Offline Courses, Request and Introspection of Learners on Flipped Learning. The result showed that online courses brought learners convenience and satisfaction with repeatable learning in every time and space the learner want. However, the learners appealed issues of communication and concentration due to the absence of face-to-face instruction by their instructor. For the offline courses, students showed interest in various practical classwork of sensory integration and changes in their attitude to actively engage in the practical classes. Conclusion : Flipped learning based instruction was effective for the sensory integration classes which require practice in terms of time securement and immersion in practice. The learners requested for adopting flipped learning based instruction to other subjects in occupational therapy curriculum, and introspected that they needed to actively engage in classes through the experience of flipped learning-based classes of sensory integration. The results of this study can be used as a basic resource when flipped learning classes are planned in occupational therapy education.

The Effect of Project Based Learning(PBL) Application Using Social Networks on Problem Solving Ability of Occupational Therapy Students (소셜네트워크를 활용한 프로젝트기반학습(PBL) 적용이 작업치료과 대학생의 문제해결능력에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the problem solving ability of occupational therapy students by applying PBL classes using social networks. Data were collected from 35 students in the third year of occupational therapy at K University from March to June 2019. The results were as follows: First, PBL application using social networks showed a significant improvement in problem solving ability. Seconds, there was a significant difference in problem solving ability according to the preference of mobile device use and major satisfaction. Therefore, as a learning tool for improving the problem-solving ability of occupational therapy students, we proposed a way to increase satisfaction with learning by activating PBL using social networks.

Study of Play and Leisure Activity Preference on Children and Youths (아동 및 청소년의 활동 선호도 연구)

  • Objective : This study is designed to investigate the children' preference in play and leisure activities in accordance with age, gender, demographic, school interest and scholastic performance. Method : A total of 204 children and youths aged in 8-17 years living in urban and rural area were recruited. The preference of activities was asked by using the questionnaire and the PAC Korean version. Results : There are differences in activity preferences according to age, gender, school interest. Girls showed higher preference in most PAC scales except for physical activities than boys. As the younger children are, the greater preference in recreation activities is shown. There were no significant differences of activity preference in demographic variable and scholar performance. The higher interest of school the children had, the greater preference in formal and social activities was shown. Conclusions : This study showed that there is play and leisure activity preference in children and youths according to age, gender, and school interest. The result of this study would be helpful for occupational therapists working with school-aged children and youths.

A Systematic Study on the Intervention Study of Intellectual Disability Students in Elementary Schools : Focusing on the Design of Single-Subject Research in Korea (초등학교 지적장애 학생의 수업 참여도 중재 연구에 관한 체계적 고찰 : 국내 단일대상연구 설계 중심으로)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of domestic single-subject research related to the participation of students with intellectual disabilities in classes. Methods : We investigated a total of five papers to determine the features and qualitative levels of the papers being analyzed. Results : A total of 12 subjects were studied, and experiments were conducted at all stages. All research used a multiple baseline design. The independent variables were the positive behavior support approach (2), the strength-oriented activities approach, the self-decision teaching and learning model approach, and the self-monitoring approach. As a dependent variables, there were four pieces set up exclusively for class participation behavior, and one that was set up mixed with class interruptions behaviors. The qualitative level of the studies to be analyzed was 100% of the high level. Conclusion : Through this study, single-subject studies that applied interventions related to participation in class for intellectual disabilities in elementary schools have confirmed that effective interventions were applied and that the quality levels were reliable.
